Here are some of the discoveries I made during the game. I think most of these are workarounds to bugs/bad systems, but still.

1. Make sure passenger trains and freights trains are not sharing the same network

This belongs to the "bad design" category because CS is generating a /lot/ of passenger trains that only have a few passengers, jamming up freight trains in the process.
If you want to go even further, make sure the passenger train network is unreachable from outside. This will pretty much kill all passenger traffic, even if they don't use any of your stations (well, there are none to start with).

2. Build your intersections on the right (or left, if you're in an English town)
This is to ensure that outgoing traffic do not block incoming traffic, causing a deadlock. This is especially important if you're building terminal stations, but...

3. Avoid building passenger terminal stations, and absolutely don't build terminal cargo stations
Right now, trains will only occupy one platform (the entry one) and ignore the other platform, even though it is free. This will jam up your station really quickly.

To handle this, I use a turnaround loop so that trains can enter from both sides.

4. Build your cargo station near the commercial/industrial areas, and near a Cargo Harbour
This is a no-brainer.

5. Give dedicated roads for the section between your cargo station and the harbour
Your CiMs will thank you.

6. Make sure your cargo train network is well-connected
Your cargo stations will send cargo trains from one station to another. Making sure that they are well-connected will save you a lot of car trips, freeing up your roads and highways.

7. Trains seem to climb hills slower than cars
I'm not exactly sure but it seems to be the case (makes sense anyway), so you should probably be building bridges for cars, not trains.

8. If you are moving a station, make sure to unset its stops first
If you don't, sometimes the line will break.

If you have a tip to share, feel free to comment below. :)

Number 1 extremely important, keep the networks separate, at least until it's fixed not to cause problems.

Number 3 doesn't seem too bad in reality - trains generated (spawning) at the station to convey goods or passengers outwards seem to appear on the opposite platform to the inbound trains, or maybe I'm just lucky!

Another tip I saw somewhere else is to build a (two way) road approaching the station vehicle entrance head on (at 90 degrees), instead of alongside, so that there is a continuous flow of the traffic in and out without and hold ups.

I added several cargo train stations - two to my biggest industry district and one each in my two smaller ones, plus one next to the cargo harbor. Bad idea - I basically had stuck trains covering every piece of rail track within my city limits. It looked hilarious though.

I guess they could expand this aspect with one-way rail, signals etc. and basically turn the game into Train Fever.

I have 3 terminal cargo stations and 1 terminal passenger station in my city - trains use both platforms on all 4 stations. Never had a train jam!

Actually, it is your decision on which side of the platform a passenger train stops. If you set up a line from A to B, which then returns to A, the train will always use the right side of the platform on both ends of the journey, as seen in the direction of the first leg of the journey from A to B. This may be the other side with left-hand drive, but I don't know.

So, if you then set up a second train line from A to C, make sure to start that second line from C when you draw the line, as it then will always use the other side of the platform in terminal A. If you draw the line from A, it will always use the same side of the platform as the first line, which you do not want for obvious reasons.

So, in this example, the blue line was drawn from this terminal station, whereas the green line was drawn from the other terminal.

I stand corrected. :)

None of the CiM games had player-controlled trains.
We got to control the timetable in CiM2.

I only had issue with trains when they all absolutely wanted to go to the same outside region. so traffic was not in my city but the outgoing lmao. that was because i put down a 2nd cargo station. passenger terminals dont do much tbh. The turist system is not well enough designed, by the time u get train stations u will have more than enough money rolling in anyways. passenger stations will be neccessary if we get Casino etc, because tourist will be a traffic issue, but atm.. mehh

Edit: also forgot, the train issue is because trains are not filling up 100% so they send more trains instead its ridicilous. They need to nerf some of the vehicle limit instead.

For what it's worth, I solved that issue by cutting the track within my city, so the freight trains from some of my freight stations go one way out of the city, and two of my freight stations and the passenger station go the other way out. Also, using more generic than specialized industry helps with cutting down the traffic.
