I am back to the game after more than an year and I want to start something new. So far, before the pause I played Pagan and Christian but I want to move to play Muslim / Hindu / Buddhist.

I picked a start with Ghaznavids, trying to conquer and convert India but I am not at all used with Muslim mechanics; I tried first to distribute most of my titles to avoid decadence and create some local duchies and minor dynasties.

However, I am facing revolt all the time although I was paying a lot of attention to character's and council and inevitably I am ending crushed, probably I don't know how to handle Muslim rulers.

So I wonder if anybody have tips on how to handle the region and a Muslim ruler; in fact any tip regarding Ghaznavid/India/Hindu/Buddhist/Zoroastrian/Jain and the respective region generally is most welcome.

India has more revolt risk as far as I remember so either expand west or try a nomad realm to destroy whole holdings to reduce the revolts at the end.
I have never expanded India yet but muslim rulers are easy to play if you know how to handle decadence.

Well, yes, but my aim in a play with Ghazvanids is to create a tolerant Indian Sunni Empire with a place for all religions and great diversity. In Rl, Late Ghaznavids moved their capital to Lahore and some Hindu subject of them were more reliable than Turkish/Persian vassals. However, they were not able to resist to Ghurid onslaught.

This is the first time when I tackle that area and I feel kind of lost after such a long pause playing the game, not to speak that I never played Muslim or Hindu rulers.

CK2 doesn't really offer a reliable way to play as a tolerant ruler, apart from cultural tolerance. You can boost tolerance towards vassals of other religions somewhat, but sadly there's no way to be more tolerant towards provinces' religion etc.
