If for vanilla... just take over Zulu and the other neighbouring minors as soon as you can. You may have to watch out for badboy, however, but just be a bit chummy wiv the UK just in case.
If you can, give away provinces next to UK to another country. That way they wont declare war due to BB. Dont conquer provinces next to UK either, as that is enough to trigger BB. Of course the UK is likely to get a boarder with you sooner or later, so if you have high BB they will destroy you.
With conquering and diplomacy, you can survive 'till Boer War, but the War is another story..
you live and die with the "discovering diamonds events". If you get them early you will have plenty of money to expand if you don't you can't make enough money to even survive.
you can make friends with the brits, annex the usual bancrupt uncivs and trade the land for south african land - thats if in your version of the game the UK doesnt have any cores on it. also the boer war might be an event to prepare for, depending on version.
Try and hit the Brits with a colonial war. Make sure all your states are states (as opposed to colonies), that way UK cannot take any of your lands. Make sure the UK is off fighting another war (such as with France/Germany) as they will often take all their troops overseas. Overrun South Africa and wait for their war score to go up (due to other war UK is involved in). I found I could get all their land except for capetown this way as Oranje. Make sure you keep up with techs and fortify the coast (though they didnt come as they were to busy). Only issue is they will keep declaring war on you as they have a border with you if you leave any of their provinces. Make sure you keep your coast fortifyed and watch them die as they assult you. I found I could only get capetown once it became South Africa as UK wouldnt give it to me in another colonial war (though later in the game I found the UK didnt go to war with any large powers making it hard to get their war score up). This way I kicked out the UK, conqured all of Africa up to the Egypt in the North. Prob is whenever you get a border with major power they will keep DOW on you so I could only get so far. Oh, and make sure you have a good sized army (I used mobilisation a lot) dont worry about going in the red to much and keep up in army techs. This last one is the most important. If you are really lucky and can afford to hold out about 10 years (and the UKs other major war doesnt end, or its warscore jumps up due to your 100 fortified troops it keep assulting) you will find you can satalite them once they get to warscore 80 or so (plus they will usually give you land), making you much safer from them and other colonial powers such as France. I did this later in the game when UK kept killing itself on my sea wall of troops, though the time lost waiting for WE to go up meant I got less land in Africa compared to if I just let WE go up enough to get UK completely out of south africa.
The most powerful thing is you have all your lands as states while major powers have them as colonies. so you can fight wars where they cannot touch you except when on their land. Just be ready for the usual regular DOW which will come as soon as the peace is over.

I'm having a nice game going round annexing the uncivs and the bankrupt nations, and trading with the UK. I've got all of South Africa under my boot now, and am trading some land from modern Saudi Arabia for the UK colonies and claims.
