Hello there I have played HOI 1 and dabbled in HOI 2. I have never ever tried this in a multiplayer setting. I basically do not wanna get wiped. It appears I get Italy as my country  . So I was looking/hoping for some good advice on how to play them. I have not really used Italy much.

We are playing the vanilla version 1.2 and the manpower fix applied. Any advice is appreciated!

Italy is a good nation to play and very popular. However it does faces problems, low manpower, bad techteams, not too strong industry...If possible i would ally Germany from day one and exchange blueprints. Also get energy from them, and for the rest try to find the best resources you can find.

It has no use to build multiple kinds of units as Italy, so I would try to focus on one area and have all techs in that area. Infantry is important with good brigades, and later you can build motorized with mechs. Building tanks is possible but an exhange with germany, supplies for tanks is probably better.

As Italy you should gain control over the skies of the Med, with some fighters and use ur naval bombers to clear out enemy ships. Expanding your navy is possible and usefull in the beginning but you just dont have the power to last long with them. It is important to have a big transport fleet for redeploying.

As for strategy you have to find out what their weak spot is and just see what you want. I would take Suez and take over North africa as it stops Allied landings for a good while.

Which brings me to my final point, italy is one of the first landing spots of allied in europe, most of the time. So always keep an army rdy and not too much in the south.

and this is a good site with a strategy..not for mp tho

Dont listen to this guy he doesnt know how to play italy ;)
here's what I would do. First off I would get everything out of N.Africa. You'll lose it all in the end anyway. Build up yuor army and wait for the oppurtune moment when Germany has franc and britain tied up nicely and then start your war on the yugos french greek maybeeven rumania for the oil and then you will rival germany for strenght on the continent. Russia should be no problem for your combined might.

Here's a bunch of ideas that work for me or that I've thought of trying but haven't just yet....

Use the first few years building up your IC. You can gain the IC needed to get the last tech team just by building it I've found. It takes about three runs of what IC you can spare to do it. You have to trade enough supply for the resources to run at max capacity though.

Also, I don't know if it's the best idea in MP, but you can always pull all your infantry home, group them in one huge army, give them a logistical leader, and install all the ministers they have that give them reduced supply consumption. I guess you could also leave larger seperate armies because Italy has to have more then one logistics wizard. But, if you know the allies aren't going to attack you in june of 36, then it'd be safe to do.

I'd also ally with Germany as soon as possible, and trade techs. Figure out what your teams can accel at researching, and tell the German player that you'll take that path. Then, Germany can concentrate on a different research and you'll trade him the prints from that path allowing you both to accelerate your research. Granted, you'll get the better deal because Germany can give you more prints, but it's good to make it helpful for him to do so. This way you aren't both researching infantry or motorized at the same time. It always sucks to be offered a blueprint when you are at 95% research!

Also, on top of that, ask Germany to do trades for you. Italy seems to get worse trades then Germany does from most nations. Not sure why, but you'd probably be better off trading him the supplies and seeing what he can get for you.

If Germany doesn't mind, I'd get out of the Alliance before war starts. This allows you to get all the benifits of the alliance up until 39, but not go to war with the allies until YOU choose to. Gives you a little more time to prepare, and will probably tick off the players of the allies because most of them won't be able to attack you now :D

You can also liberate Lybia and Somalia with no real loss to you. Both have no strategic value and are better off as puppets because then they gain IC. You might also get some techs out of them too :)

As for who to attack? You can basically head straight east around the coast of the Med. and annex all in your wake. I'd either stop at Turkey, or be prepared for a possible Russian attack. Take Istanbul and the other side of the canal and wait for a peace offer. Perhaps take some more territory, but leave anything north east of the capital. When they offer peace, you'll have a nice little chunk of Turkey, but what's left will stand between you and the Soviets.

Italy can isolate itself pretty well, only having two or three provinces of the mainland connecting to France. If you have no problem loosing Ethiopia, you can fight the Allies from Fortress Rome. Naval bomb any fleets in the med (after having the latest and greatest model and doctrines..not a bad thing for you to research as the levels are low and then trade with Germany as stated above!), take the islands that you can,
and do assults into Africa.

If you regularly harrass the Brits in Africa, they wont be able to pull those armies back to defend the main islands. But, in the begining if he sees you pulling your forces back, and then sees you break the alliance with Germany, he might very well think you won't be much of a challenge and pull a lot of his forces out of Africa. This will allow you to maybe trick him and run rampant there once you rejoin the Axis after war starts.

Last idea, when Vichy fires, Vichy is always a nice target :)

Disband all non '36 Land Units, disband all type 1 DD's, build massive ammount of IC from Jan 36 till late 38, crash research the Land Doc's, work on Full Hawk Slider. When IC starts to finish late '38, you will have between 95 -100 base IC (depending on how well you planned and how well trades are going). USe this to switch the IC from the build factories in 'late '38 into serial building '39 Inf (you might want to switch to the Infantry minister, or keep the -15% supply guy in place depending on your situation, as you have both the land docs and full hawk, you build Inf rather cheap). This will give you between 100 - 130 '39 Divisions to start play with in Sept '39 (assuming you have aggreed to wait with war till Danzig). This number of Divisions should be enough to hold Italy and N-Africa under control, perhaps even enough to advance depending on the quality of you oponent.

Sit back and relax during the German attack on Poland/France (might want to do some naval bombing and depending on the situation, make advances in N-africa). After Vichy, work together with Germany to take out Spain and Gibraltar. After this is cleared, gobble up Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Iraq, Egypt. Ask for some German forces to help you, as he will probably be only preparing for Barbarossa after that. This will make the Med Musulini's little swimming pool, and you can either focus on assisting Germany in Barbarossa (some Mounties attacking through Turkey into Caucuses for instance), or you can take over the defense of the Reich while your German friend is playing with uncle Joe.

As for a core army, I would suggest getting a bulk of up to date plain Infantry. You might want to spice up your army with some Mounties-Arty and Mech-SPA to have an 'elite' force to assit either defense (against Allied invasions), or as supporting forces for the attack on SU.

Keeping up in Air tech for Naval Bombers/Fighters is allways handy.
On the long run it really depends on how the game develops, but where as most Germanies need to concentrate a lot of research/production into preparing/fighting the conflict with Russia, you can afford to spend some into other areas of research, like Naval, Air, Para's, which Germany might not be able to.

Depending on the house rules of your MP group:
> you might work on a strategy to pop in and out of the Axis. While it can be usefull, I think it shows more character to stay put, but as someone suggested, it can be usefull.
> Depending on houserules of your MP group, you might want to take out Albania ASAP (like in January 36). It has no garantees, no allies, and even the little resources they produce can help fuel your IC. Taking it out while still fighting in Ethiopia helps in getting dissent down (you get roughly 5 dissent for a DOW on Albania).
> Take your time in Ethiopia. Attacking the mountains again and again will skill up some of your leaders. It also cuts CG spending in half, allowing you to make more Factories.
> Liberate Somalia, they produce a HQ-AA for you, which you can use for a while (at least untill Somalia is annexed).
