Previously on these forums I put up an identical thread asking how to make a go of it as Neutral Saudi Arabia and some of the responses were insanely helpful and enlightening and helped me to up my game as tiny minor nations.
So I thought it'd be beneficial to do the same again in a far more claustrophobic environment: Making a go of it as Mexico.
As with the Sauds, my preference for Mexico would be to stay neutral, working down the Central American subcontinent until I reach Colombia before expanding into South America (probably using a quick naval invasion to hop Panama Canal while I'm at it).
This is likely impossible thanks to the Pax Americana and, even though I don't think it's trigger in a Historical game, it's not likely the United States will let me simply run rampant even if I was to stick the game on Historical Focuses (Which I'd rather not do, anyway, but for purposes of planning this out in theory I'm not going to rule it out).
So those are my preferences: Neutral Mexico in an Ahistoric Game.
That may be impossible - As soon as I'm strong enough to do anything (and have passed the 50% world tension limit for neutral justifications) America may simply curb stomp me with an ultimatum to stand down.
If that is indeed the case, then I'm curious - will America actually act to defend Latin American states BEFORE it has triggered the Pax Americana? (To put that another way - in a Historic game, where Pax Americana isn't triggered, will I have to worry about the US?)
If all else fails I'll have no choice but to simply flip Mexico fascist, join the Axis and try against all odds to take America off the board (and with it, Canada), before turning around and building my Latin American empire. That may lead to an All-American Mexican Empire which isn't too bad an idea, but still not where my preference would have lain.
If anybody has any suggestions or experience in this regard - not just with the question of Pax Americana but also the mechanical details of playing Mexico and trying to do all this (I've never played them before), I'm eager to hear tips and suggestions and ideas. Thanks!
