Well, let's assume you're going to be Holland since that was your pick.

You start off small, easy to be picked off by France or England, or basically any regional power if they so choose, so your top priority is to get a big buddy friend, a nearby large state that can protect you (ideally a nation like France, England, or Burgundy) if some of the other players get any designs on you. It'd also be a good idea to work out some sort of territorial deal over the Flemish provinces with either Burgundy or France, so that you don't have to fight either within the first 20 years or so unsupported.

Day 1 royal marriage with Friesland. It starts out in 1399 without an heir, so if you are quick you can get into a PU with it (this is of course if Holland is no longer in a PU with Hainut at game start, I can't remember).

Work on your trade, try and keep infamy low, and aim for taking the provinces needed to form the Netherlands. Try and work out a deal with another major colonial power (Portugal, Spain, England, lesser extent France), as to where you will be colonizing so you two don't end up with conflicting issues.

Holland is never going to be a total power-house nation though, you will always have a lower forcelimit and smaller economy than France (unless France screws up terribly), a smaller navy than Great Britain, and less vast colonial empire than the major colonial powers.

Basically, just make good use of diplomacy and try not to be a dick or draw too much attention to yourself as Holland/Netherlands. If things start heating up unbearably in Europe you can always just move your capital to your colonial territories so that anyone who invades can just occupy the entire Netherlands and you don't have to worry about war exhaustion of province defections (at least from Dutch territories).

Oh and keep your infamy down. Destroys your trade.

Others may have different suggestions, but this is a pretty reasonable way to start, especially for someone new to Eu3 MP.

thanks, that's some great stuff! :)
I'm probably going to play Brunei and I'm going to be pretty alone in Asia so I will have about 70/100 years of slow build up ( or even more! :D) .. and it's going to be similar to Holland ( just going to form Malaya)

Don't forget that Europeans can arrive far more quickly than that.

Diplomacy. First an most imporatant thing for a MP game.

Know your fellow players. Interact with them. Make deals and create ties. Know what they like and what they hate.
Deceive enemies and try to turn them against each other. Have an eye for the Status Quo. Do not act like an asshole.

The list is almost infinite, but priorities will change each game, depending on your fellow players.
:)

BTW there are some technical advises that i had to learn while trying to play
-If you have played map changing mods like MEIOU or D&T clear the cache(delete map/cache folder) because you will get Out Of Sync(OOS) errors that WILL make you crash later on
-When the game has started there will be a window until everybody connects, don't write ANYTHING in the chat bar because again, you will crash(it's likely others will too)
-In game, don't pause, this angers other players and seems to make the game crash(fortunately space doesn't work so you can't accidentally pause)

For gameplay advises, it's really easy, just make alliances with somebody, partecipate to diplomacy, make deals with the players like "i get all the provinces of present day belgium and you get artois cambrai and burgundy proper". By the rest, it's like SP

Played against someone in an mp game where he was holland.

he hyper-tech'd for colonies, and then colonised one of the islands on the way to america.

when it cored he moved his capital and colonised america, and then when he could, he moved his capital to america.

he then colonised basically all of america, and since his capital was over there, he had no overseas penalties.

he became the most powerful nation in the world, and kicked my britain out of america completely.

moving capitals is banned in some mp games, but if allowed, holland has huge potential.

even without capital moving, they ahave rich provinces, and can make a good trading empire, form netherlands, etc.

Don't forget that heavy traders (most notably Holland) get an enormous research boost. My guesstimate may be off by a bit but I assume that a well-played Holland may start exploration around 1430.

My earliest is 1414. 1416-18 is my usual dates though (As Holland)
