PI did a great job with the music but sometimes I just want something else.
I came across this youtube channel of Ernst Stolz a while back, it has some fantastic playlists of music from the period.

Just turn off the ingame music and play this in the background ;)

(If anyone knows other good (youtube) music playlists for background music, please share them here as well)

When Conquest of paradise was announced, someone pointed out that there was a movie of the same name, 1492: Conquest of Paradise.

They linked it on YouTube. The soundtrack was by Vangelis and although it seemed cheesy at first, I grew to really like it.

Since then, Vangelis has been my default EU4 music. The Conquest of Paradise soundtrack, also Alexander, and a couple of others. They seem to fit the style and time period of the game.

Gladiator soundtrack is also appropriate, though that's by someone else, Hans someone.

I'll link to YouTube later when I'm home.

Are you freakin' kidding me?!
How awesome is that?
I use to listen to that kind of music since ages, even to Vangelis but never heard that he made this epic score?!
Did you know he wrote many anthems for official events like olympic games or the FIFA Soccer World Cup?

Alexander • Vangelis • Titans (O.S.T.)

His name is Hans Zimmer, he's probably the greatest and most famous composer of the present time - Hollywood's house and farm composer of most of the greatest and most successful Scores and Soundtracks for Hollywoods Triple A titles and all those other usual Blockbusters…

[…]I'll link to YouTube later when I'm home.
Here you are …

Gladiator • Hans Zimmer ('Now we are free' with Lisa Gerrard)• Full Score

Thanks in advance.
Did you noticed that there's already a really great music mod to be found in Steam's Workshop for EU IV?
Got it?

In this sense

Got it?

To me that mod seems more fitting for Victoria 2 than EU4.

Personally I prefer music from the nations I'm playing and from that time.
It would be great if it was possible to create a mod that would allow historic nation specific music and timeframe specific music, so that for example every 50 years you would get new songs.

The problem I have with the music is that it's too grandiose, orchestral and contemporary sounding. Medieval and renaissance music was a bit plainer than that. I realize that it's a game and that it has to be exciting and polished, but associating the music more with the cultures and the period would really give it flavor.

couldn't agree more (and those two are nice examples). even though I do like the standard ingame music, hearing the actual music people listened to at the time just gives it much more flavour

The Dutch soundtrack is very fitting and of high quality (and makes me want to go to war), thanks a lot for this excellent thread

you mean the one I posted as example or the whole playlist? anyway I'm glad you like it.

I also like some of the short and simpler ones in between the "real" songs, like hearing the carillon of Amsterdam square when playing the Dutch republic.

So that's where the titular theme is from. I've always known it as one of the go-to themes when generic epic music is required for whatever event.

Yeah I've grown to really like it, both the main theme, and the whole soundtrack album.

Here it is - I highly recommend this as background music for EU4! I've since bought the full soundtrack album, rather than relying on Youtube.
