Hi, it's me again, and to bitch again :D
But it's all to improve the game, so I guess it's good in the end ^^

Well, my complain of the day is about the little, tiny armies you tend to get when stomping repeatedly over an enemy. Things like a whole dozen of 10 to 300 men large regiments, which have zero military efficiency, but are extremely annoying.

The problem is, considering how weak they are, they nearly always flee at the first hint of a battle, before any casualties can be inflicted. As such, they are nearly unkillable, just fleeing from one battle to another.
And yet, as small and ridiculously weak as they are, they sadly have all the abilities of a whole army, able to pillage, besiege and ravage the provinces they are in.

Something like that :

tinysiege.png

It's extremely irritating to hunt them down, considering their propension to flee without harm, and even more so if this happen in very wealthy regions, where your province's regiments are so big that they suffer a lot of attrition (see the "Attrition is insane" for this specific complain ^^), while each building lost represent a sizeable loss of income, all that to try to eradicate some puny 10-men large regiment.

It also feel quite unreal and weird to see a band of 21 guys besieging a "Huge Castle", and firing pop-up about such and such building that has been destroyed because of the occupying army 0_o

This morning, I had a real SWARMING of such buggers (war against Germany, I let you guess how many regiments there was...), and due to the lack of warning when a province is beseiged, I had to CONSTANTLY scan the whole map of my empire to see if there wasn't some 50-man-big siege somewhere wrecking provinces.

Harassing techniques and scorched earth (like avoiding big armies to pillage and ravage the province behind) are of course perfectly legitimate, and I don't complain about them. But not when they are done by 10 men who always flee when battle begins.

So I would really like two things, for the sake of realism and the well-being of my nerves :

- Make it so that no unit can flee the battle before at least the archers phase has been spent, ensuring that each battle inflict at least SOME casualties.
- Automatically disband any regiment with less than a minimal amount of soldiers (I would say something like 100 or 250), to avoid the situation seen in the screenshot above. Also, it would be understandable that a regiment desintegrate if it has taken such a beating that only so few men are left.

I wouldn't use an exact number but better a percentage, cause if f.e. 250 is the limit and you are playing a count in Ireland or Scotland you regiments will be quickly disbanded

I thought that is was already done, that if a army was only 10% of its establishment it would disband but it seems not the case, cause I have seen armies of 1 man besieging a castle (A papal army was besieging Rome which was taken by the muslims, so that 1 man must have been the pope himself :) ).

Maybe something like EU2s shock phase, where if you have ten times the shock value of the opponent, you automatically win and crush him? It would have to occur in the maneuver phase, though. It is a touch annoying to see 250 men stand against 25000 for a week, 'maneuvering' - just kill the bastards, already!

If they wouldn't burn buildings they would be harmless and just attrition away.
Hum...

Err, the post isn't about complaining that armies burn buildings... It's about complaining that armies far too tiny to have real relevance, have the same capacity of nuisance than real armies :p
And the fact that you can't wipe them out, as they flee if you try to start a battle against them.

Yes, but the burning down buildings is the main harmful effect the armies do if they don't take provinces.

They'll eventually die of attrition however, unless they are at friendly territory. And they never are at friendly territory when sieging. For example, the 1 man regiment is eliminated on the first of next month.

Again, I agree with that. What I disagree with, is the fact that such tiny amount of people CAN inflict damages to the province, and that they are always able to escape when I want to hunt them down.

Is attrition automatically rounded up ? Because if not, the guy can never die.

Veldmaarschalk, King of Men and myself have all given suggestions to alleviate this problem. Couldn't some of them be implemented into the game ?

Attrition is rounded up.

Ideally, this problem would be immidiately attended to. However, any changes to this require Johan to do his magic. So practically, since this is so small problem really and as we are in short supply of Johan's magic, it can take time before it can be fixed and possibly considered too small problem to be fixed at all.

I personally like the overrun idea proposed by King of Men as a fix.

Ok, well, I suppose that we'll have to wait to see if some sparkle of Johan's occult power become free, then.
Hey, it's a public beta, so I'm trying to do my part of the job as beta-tester :D

(now, seriously, do you mean that you have only ONE programmer for the whole game, and that he's not dead of exhaustion already ? 0_o)

Not only that, but he does it in his unpaid free time and this time has to be also shared with patching other titles. :)

Wow.

I know, then, who besieged my castle in the picture.

Nah, if it was Him (properly capitalized) then he would have won in a day. You don't work that much and that hard and let some lousy castle get in your way. :D
