Prologue
The taste of blood in his mouth mingled with some hints of the moist ground that mashed against his face. He quickly pulled himself upwards and spat out the warm liquid, but the metallic taste lingered in between his teeth and on the fringe of his throat. His fingernails dug into dirt as he clawed his way upright. By the time he was fully supported by his legs, another swing came at him and clipped his cheekbone with a snap.
The sick thud of his body hit the ground again, but this time consciousness was teetering on the edge of his eyes and he rolled those spheres up into his eyelids as if to catch the fleeting awareness and force it to return. He felt hands grapple at his belt-- the sack of money tied to the leather strap was quickly pulled away and the sound of coins being hastily counted rang in his ears as loudly as the dull noise that dominated his hearing. As his eyes slowly focused on the figure standing above him, a sudden thud knocked him further into the dirt: boot had met with his abdomen.
Blood splashed out of his mouth and onto the offending leg and the young man cursed audibly. He curled up around the boot and his hands frantically pulled at the leg hoping to lift the pressure off his stomach. His fingernails bent against the animal skin as he struggled. Tears began to well up along the edges of his eyes and he felt his breathing slacken as if he was inhaling dirt.
“Next time, boy,” the one above him growled out angrily while applying pressure on the young man underneath, “when I ask you for your money, you're going to hand it over without any questions.”
He whimpered underneath the oppressor and gurgled a bloody response-- it sounded like a pathetic affirmative. The boot lifted away and left him shuddering and curled up on the dirty, freezing ground of the early morning. The other who had his money in hand began to walk away. The young man took heavy breaths in between the pain along his face and middle. It had already began to numb and he bitterly watched the triumphant little thief walk towards the other end of the courtyard. His eyes glared at the back of the assailant.
As if on cue, the one who still had the stolen gold dangling along his fingertips turned back towards the young man. Immediately, the victim cowered at his sight. With that glance, his resistance and bitterness was subdued just as easily as the money was taken from his pockets. The young man on the ground only wished to be left alone, now. If only he had heeded his friends' warnings, he thought. If only he had trusted what they said. If only he had stayed away and avoided him. Instead, he had been careless and he had become the third victim-- the third victim of the new student named Renault de Fronsac.

The stained glass windows of the Chapel of Saint Francis wore a downy layer of frost on the outside which softened the earthy tones of the various depictions of the saint performing works of mercy. The sun, however, was already beginning to turn the thin layer into an ethereal film of liquid. Along the outer edge of the chapel two pairs of feet sank into the crisp and cold grass. Both figures, stooped forward in reverence under brown hoods seemed like careful replicas of the stained glass saint in the windows above them.
“That's the third one this month, Julien,” the first one said quietly while looking at the ground.
“He will come around eventually, Jean, don't worry,” the second smoked out a cloud of mist as he spoke.
“It's irresponsible to continue to allow him to bully the rest of the children in his class,” the first one added.
“That's why I've sent him to Sister Marie for discipline,” the second replied while walking over a small root that had wandered far from a tree and began to hug along the side of the chapel.
“Even so, regardless of the punishment the fact that he's still here is too much special treatment already,” the first one sighed as he followed suit over the root.
“He solved The Puzzle, Jean,” the second one said plainly.
“Yes, yes, and he passed all of our examinations with the highest scores: you keep repeating his qualifications as if I haven't heard them over and over, but we must be responsible for everyone that goes to this campus of the Academy, Julien, you know that.”
The second one sighed heavily into the chilly air. “I'm not justifying what he did, Jean, but...” and here he paused for a moment in his speech but continued with his pace along the wall of the chapel, “but...” he repeated, “you and I both know that we're running out of time. These boys were sent here because both they and their parents wanted to serve Spain. All came of their own free will and all are free to leave at their own free will. None of us are forcing them to remain here--”
“Is that your justification?” the other interrupted. With accelerated steps, the one trailing from behind reached the others' side quickly, but his voice grew quieter. “Why are you being so adamant about this? It has to be more than just what the Room tells you-- there's something else that's making you sacrifice other candidates just so that Renault can advance.”
Both came to a halt near the edge of the chapel's wide wall. The one named Julien turned his eyes towards the one named Jean. “The Scarlet Academy is not just another school for men,” Julien muttered while searching Jean's eyes wearily, “These boys aren't here just to receive a vocation from Spain. The time is coming when we'll need boys like Renault to grow up to be men of the Silence--”
“I know all this already--” Jean interrupted once again but Julien's eyes shook him into holding his tongue.
Julien raised one of his arms and the brown habit which enshrouded the limb was slowly pulled back. As the skin underneath that ran from the wrist to the elbow was exposed, Jean could do nothing but hold his breath. A wound-- a bloody wound had latched itself onto Julien's forearm like the reddened shadow of a leech. Near the wrist was its black and brown tail and it coiled fatly up the forearm until the “mouth” was a crusting circle around the elbow still ruby with the satiating blood. Jean recoiled in horror. His eyes shot to Julien's and looked at him with a crushed expression.
Julien quickly wrapped his arm once again. “As you can see,” he breathed harshly through his teeth while returning his gaze to his front, “after nearly four hundred years, it's finally started.”
“I... I didn't know--” Jean said in between what sounded like gasps.
“Now that you've seen, you're going to have to be next,” Julien said with a tired exhale. “But now you know why we need ones like Renault... Mankind has no time left.”

Wow that gave me a flurry of thoughts. At the start I was thinking that Renault was the one being beaten up, then in the middle I thought that it might be someone framing Renault, but then I realised it was him, even if he is not like the Renault we already know and love. And I wonder what this thing that has stuck itself to Julien is, and why it will end mankind. I am confused...
great to be following this from the start canonized. Promising setup, that's for sure.
Lots of questions leading to a nice build up! What sickness is plaguing Julien? what part will this bully of a Renault play and what man of the Silence will he become? (whatever that is).

I wonder what it all means. 400 years, so around the year 1000, something happened. The arrival of the timepieces? And the wound? It doesn't seem like typical stigmata, as I would almost expect in this story ( ) so what is it?

Well, what happened 400 years before the prolouge? Aliens came and the Timepiece somehow got away from them? And this sickness, maybe a sideaffect from Encounters of the 4th kind.
A very intriguing prologue indeed! I never expected old Renault to have a such a past!
