Alright, I can deal with the same timeline.

So can I, but I think it would be cool to begin in, say, 1920. That way world domination can be a lot slower, and more deliberate with more planning than declaring war on everyone and their mother. It would be an excellent gameplay. Maybe just wishful thinking...

Yes, I would like to see a slightly earlier timeline. 1936 is a bad year to start as Italy, you've already invaded ethiopia and the allied powers don't like you :).

I'd say 1934...early enough for the first Austria crisis.

I would love to start from 1928 to implement Soviet industrialization program, handle the Great Depression and starting to prepare Japan and China for conflict in the far east. That would be sweet! :p

And be fighting the Philippine Insurrection as the United States. Or what about 1920 so then the player could fight the Russian Civil War, manage through the 20's economic boom, and then face the Great Depression. A master economist is what it would take to come out unscathed...

I appreciate Paradox's problem in this; if you are a true historian, every year has something interesting happening.

Id prefer 1933 rather than 1936 as a starting point due to the fact that most relationships were still in the balance at that point (not to mention Italys decision to back Austria in case of war).

Plus 1933 is when both Hitler and FDR took office. 1933's had my vote for a while. But in another thread one of the mods (Vulture?) pointed out that given the immense amount of work required to extend the timeline, work that would be better spent elsewhere, it probably won't happen.

An earlier start dates means the GC is even more likely to be completely out of whack by 1939, unless you make it event-heavy, which defeats the entire purpose anyway.

I think that HoI fans are polarized into several groups; (Those that want to recreate wwII and those that want to completely avoid it/start a new history that may or may not involve war. I think it's up to paradox to find the line between the two.

Personally...'33 doesn't sound bad to me. Considering I play Italy...I don't really want to recreate it's history that much ( :) ) since it would involve me loosing every single battle (exception of early moves in ethiopia).

You make it sound like war is a phenomenon unto itself. It's part of a much larger system, however. You can go to war for provinces, to prove technological or political strength, and more often than not, countries war for economic reasons.

I'd like to see the game start in 1920. WWII did not come out of nowhere and it'd be nice to have a game that expresses this. America, Russia, the former Central Powers, Italy, Japan--all the powers of WWII saw a lot of history in the sixteen years between '20 and '36. I think HoI is probably the best engine to handle those years, so I wish they were included.

Doesn't make a lot of difference, I'll probably buy the sequel anyway, but I think that the inclusion of events like the Turkish War of Independence and the Russian Civil War, while not assuring many more customers, would make a few customers happier. Maybe not enough for the extra work that would have to be done, but something that would be nice.
