How quickly can one civilize China in Vicky:R (not in VIP)?

I managed it in 1852, although I had to annex Korea and Annam to get the required industry score (with the predictable effect that now France and the UK DoW me every time the peace treaty expires).

Anyone done significantly better than that, and if so, how?

I've only done it once, but I didn't annex anyone before I became civilized. If I remember correctly I did it in 1855. I think mid-50's is pretty normal as that is usually when some machine parts start to come onto the market. It all depends quite a lot if you're lucky with random events, like ones that give you RP, free divisions or prestige, or not though.

Doesn't this headline belong in the OT forum? :D

Seriously though, mid to late 50's sounds about right if you get it right and aren't subjected to any random acts of imperialism.

The initial Opium War went quite well this time around, much better than previous attempts, and hugging Russia like China's bestest buddy with every diplomat seems to have reduced the random acts of imperialism.

1852 it was in my ongoing game as well. I did not conquer any neighbours, "only" won the (first) Opium War taking 2 dye-producing Indian provinces in the process. I had to occupy the whole India for that, but I was producing cavalry/cuirassiers for the military score anyway :) The funny thing during this war was that UK annexed Panjabis managed to liberate themselves from the British oppression (so did the Irish by the way) and are my faithful ally ever since (and I'm in 1913 or so now). They even annexed some Indian minors. Oh, and (as they inherited some techs from the UK) they are quite a good partner for trading techs. I don't think they will manage to civilize though. The required industrial score and military score are way above what they have now.

I was wondering if it was possible to prolong the first Opium War till you get civilized and then allow the Brits to win, thus entering the regular Chinese chain of events. There are some free techs in the bargain, as well as some new accepted cultures. You won't get it if you win any of the Opium Wars.

Right now in my game as China Ive held off the UK and British East India, built up 1 transport and took aus, new zealand and south africa from the UK, iam at 20 + for warscore, i ve tried giving them generous peace deals, but they keep refusing, which in turn just encourages me to take more from them! :D
Also I kept increases relations with russia with 100 pound increments, got into a full alliance with them all in time for the crimean war, too bad Russia signed the treaty of paris before i could send help over... But Russia as an ally is amazing, excellent trade deals just for my one colonial claim, i cant recall the names of the techs at the moment, but now my income has skyrocketed and i can build factories, but so far i need machine parts.

Tip for civilising China (prior to the latest VIP patches anyway)

Annex Annam and Korea at roughly the same time, but the minute you annex them, release them as as satelites. That way, you get the prestige boost, but not the badboy.

After civilising China why should the player care about BB any more? ;) Well perhaps for trade possibilities but certainly not for being scared of BB wars.

Oh, BB is not an issue once China is civilised. Indeed, often the first thing I do as a civilised China is reincoporate Korea and Annam wholly to stop any other powers getting a foothold near me :D

The routine I always used to follow before VIP was to trade my claims in Central Asia and Sakhalin with Russia for freedom of trade, publishing industry, practical steam engine and any other two techs of choice. The machine parts from publishing industry allowed me to construct a level 5 lumber mill in Beijing, which took the industry score to past 50. My military requirement was already met because China starts out with a pretty massive (if crap) army, and then it was simply a case of getting 100 prestige by annexing and releasing Korea and Annam.

Can't do it anymore in VIP (we slowed down the progress by making civilisation related to technologies discovered: far more accurate). But in vanilla Revolutions, I think it should still work more or less

i get the industrial score through industrialization...100 is pretty easy. (even just a single state could do that)

and well, i get the prestige through claiming colony by trading with japan.

military score is hard, well...the resources required is huge.

around 1852 is fast, i think.

Not impossible. but more difficult. I once as Germany having 500+ badboy. Still manage to get tech trade from Sweden with near +200 relation. The price is high, of course (more than 1M for one tech).

But as you can buy the world as China, flooding those friendly country with money should not be a problem ;)
