Greetings and Welcome to one of the worst After Action Reports on these here forums.
You may remember me (most likely not) from my previous AAR's (Nations of Iron and Forgotten Latin Kingdom).

I've returned to make another AAR about the same nation (my home country) in Veritas et Fortitudo, for the reason that in the previous AAR, I was using a Dev. Version of the mod (Veritas et Fortitudo) and ended up having a full bugged game where crashes happened rarely (I never crash in Paradox games, so if and when I do, there must be a huge problem). And thus I put an end to that AAR and returned (As promised to an acquaintance) to re-write the AAR with the hopes that you, people from different corners of the world, can enjoy a wonderful (shitty) and interesting (most likely not) AAR.
Chapter List:

Conditions shall be:
  1. Normal Difficulty.
  2. Lucky Nations Off.
  3. Normal 1310 AD/CE Start.
  4. No back-tracking (If I pressed a button or made an action by mistake, we do not revert that mistake. What is done is done). So no save-scumming.

Thanks for reading and I hope that my writing skills will at the very least offer you a very comfortable experience (You're asking for too much).

Part I: Introduction
Chapter I: The Echoes of a Nobody

Welcome to the first part of the AAR.
We are playing as the insignificant and irrelevant country of Wallachia. A country situated in South-Eastern Europe, at the gates of Asia. Traversed, conquered and beaten down by Empires that changed the world we live in today. A world that remembers' the great and glorious deeds of those Empires and Kingdoms, writing them down in history books, greatly detailing their actions and misfortunes, their drama and their glory.

But what of Wallachia? What does this country that you just heard of now, mean anything to the world? Why, if it was great and glorious like those Empires, those Kings and Queens, whose ideas and wishes changed the world they lived in, we all would've written them down in our books, making great movies about their conquests and battles.

Look how insignificant we appear. Who would notice us?
J5qLSUQ.png

Nobody. Dacians, Wallachians, Romanians. They weren't conquerors. They weren't even significant at the very least. So of course we don't mention them like Rome or Francia or the Ottomans. We don't remember them almost at all...

Oh but the Empires of old, the Kingdoms that shaped this civilization. They remember them. They battled foes of unspeakable power. They crushed their enemies with sheer strength. They were unbeatable. The Roman Empire, in all its glory, had nothing standing in its way. The Hungarian Kingdom, wielding unimaginable numbers, covered lands from Europe with no-one to stand in their way. The Ottoman Empire, stretching far and wide over Europe and Asia, made Europe fell on its knees.

So you ask, why would these grand nations remember someone as irrelevant as Wallachia? If you want to know, go grab a history book and read about it. This is another story all-together.
So sit back and don't walk on any spears!

For those that actually heeded my advice to go on and read some history (probably no one), here are some interesting links about Vlach culture:
1. Trajan's Dacian Wars
2. Wallachia's war against the Ottomans.
These are just a few of the history pertaining Wallachia. Nothing that interesting. Hope you enjoy reading. Thanks!

Part I: Introduction
Chapter II: The Wolves Around Us

Our people are surrounded from all sides. Bulgarians, Hungarians, Mongols and Serbians. The Horde and Hungary are threats that need to be addressed.
6VGhqwS.png

Our army consists of 8 regiments that remained from the Independence War against Hungary, led by Basarab I in 1309 AD/CE.
zblFVdZ.png

Basarab managed to fend of the Magyars, but another, more powerful enemy remains.
u8JISGK.png

Our King is young (20 years old) and has some very good knowledge in administrating a country (5/2/4). That is good for now. We need to efficiently control our realm to the fullest extent.
VhRi6pJ.png

We have no rivals and no enemies, as we are new to the world stage.
f8X6aKw.png

But what we do have is a reason to invade Bulgaria. We need access to the Black Sea and Tulcea would make a great port province.
And since we achieved a great feat of breaking off from the Magyar King, Karoly Robert, we achieved Army Ideas. They should help us train our troops to defend our land better.
cKPRZoT.png

We have limited array of policies to select from. The Diplomacy policy would aid us the most at this time. Since we are new, we require friends that stand beside us in times of need, and vice-versa.

Part I: Introduction
Chapter III: Regaining Ambition

Basarab the First looks over the regional map. Pointing towards the province of Tulcea, owned by Bulgaria.

"We need to reclaim it, now that we are free, Octavian." Basarab turns towards Octavian, his most loyal sergeant turned General, during the Independence War.
"Of course, my King. What course of action do you suggest?" Octavian asked, hoping his liege had a better plan than running in heads-front over the Danube river. "We will have to recruit two more infantry regiments." The King responded.
fTYej2i.png

"Orders shall be dispatched as soon as the meeting is over, sire." Octavian said. "Also, " he continued, "one of our informers in Tulcea claimed that the Bulgarians have officially announced us as their rivals."
Gq9P0Pz.png

"Fine, we will do the same to them as fast as possible." The King responded harshly.
6rpd25c.png

"Now on the matter of diplomacy. The Serbians in the west are a very real threat to our people. They hold armies almost twice our size. We must make them our friends as soon as possible. SQUIRE!" The King yelled.
"Yes, my liege!" The squire arrived in the meetings room. "Dispatch a diplomat to improve relations with the Serbs at once!"
"Yes, my liege." The squire answered.
QHbfS6z.png

rQoW01H.png

"Octavian, bring me the documents pertaining to the Casus Belli."
"Right away, my King." Octavian answered.
yOkyzvP.png

"Hmm, yes, these shall prove our justification for the war to anyone who dares question it." The King stated, while looking at the documents.
"Furthermore, we must enact a diplomatic policy before we commence this conflict. The diplomatic impact shouldn't be too high for us then. Hopefully the Hungarians are pre-occupied somewhere else."
"Yes my King." Octavian responded dully.
zugUiQs.png

The meeting concluded, and the King returned to his throne, awaiting the news in Europe.

Days later, the Luxembourg Carnival was announced, welcoming all of Europe's Catholics.
adS66py.png

The King also forms a contract with two mercenary regiments, prior to the attack on Bulgaria.
UvHvGWJ.png

Soon, dire news stroke. The Serbs are trying to fabricate a claim on one of our provinces! We must hurry with our attack, so that our war is finished before the Serbians might strike.
rddbMAI.png

Our troops are almost ready!
nF1Kd39.png

We are positioning our forces near the border.
rHwTRuB.png

The declaration has been made, the invasion has begun! Epirus' Armies cannot march towards us through foreign lands. We have the upper advantage!
o0NcxTQ.png

The Bulgarian General is no match for our King!
4QUI3fj.png

Our treasury is running low. We might have to take some loans in order to maintain the war.
5i0pOLB.png

Tarnovo is almost ours! Fight on Basarab!
P6Jy8C7.png

Our first Victory!
yA79ycL.png

Octavian has begun chasing the retreating Bulgarian Forces, so he might make them surrender once and for all!
PHrzIqn.png

Eventually we take two loans of 10 ducats each. Maybe won't be necesary. Hopefully!
ZF3nSZJ.png

Basarab quickly dispatches several regiments to siege the Bulgarian lands to the west, while rushing to cut off the Bulgarian Army retreating from Octavian.
Victory again!
XA0sUO4.png

Bulgaria shall be ours!

Looks kewl. I wish you the best of luck my good sir. What version of VeF are you playing this on?
Latest. I believe it was 1.1.3g. Was surprised to find a very flat GUI, but its a great addition to the mod. So I approve of it.

Added to the VeF forum AAR list!

Chapter IV: Short Rivalry

Our armies are spread thin across the theater of war. We do not have enough troops to supplement the siege of all provinces.
GBsitA7.png

We shall hire 2 more merc. regiments.
zQ72WvR.png

The enemy raised two regiments in the unoccupied provinces. Basarab and Octavian are doing everything possible to round them off. This will likely slow down our war effort.
iZnPSKS.png

uI6FQ9G.png

The last of the recruited regiments were forced to surrender at Varna.
MspdtdA.png

Soon after, a Monopoly Company offered us a large sum of money to allow them to operate. The King dully accepts.
QOp34es.png

Thus we can repay all our loans.
zz38sVb.png

In the far East, rivalry between the two Hordes have cause one of them to embargo the other.
oSm9UH6.png

But that did not stop the Mongols to raid one of our provinces! Curse those savage bastards!
9ZHYlGH.png

The Bulgarian capital is ours however! Much joy and celebration! Maybe the war will end sooner than expected?
KxbNo3E.png

And our King is acclaimed as a military genius throughout the land!
Y4WKbFG.png

Attempts at befriending Serbia have all but failed. They seem to be keen on taking some of our land. Cannot figure why though, since our provinces do not have such a high value.
Udyo5Bx.png

After some months of continuous sieging have brought the Western Bulgarian lands under our control. Now the East must be taken care of and the war shall be over faster than anticipated.
2XyqQAG.png

As more territory is captured, our need for mercenaries diminishes.
107yHmP.png

And on 13th of August, 1312 AD/CE, the Vlach-Bulgarian Rivalry War came to an end!
8LuHBbH.png

RZvPWto.png

Our neighbours would likely be worried about this rise in prestige and land expansion of a nation as insignificant as ours. They shall fear Basarab and they shall tremble at the thought of entering our lands.

Chapter V: World Affairs

We have won our first war. Happiness flows through our peasants! Happy they have such a great leader to reclaim the lands taken from us through force!
We have also begun operations to create better administration for these provinces.
f8dxPMG.png

And our King, Basarab the First, dispatched an envoy to the Magyars, hoping to improve relations with them so that, they do not pay an extreme attention to our sudden acquisition of territory.
DzjfEFK.png

Octavian also convinced the King to adopt an Administration policy, so that our newly acquired provinces become easier to control.
dPpKJei.png

The King, seeing that we acquired territory towards the Black Sea, ordered the construction of a few vessels so that our future sailors learn how to navigate the sea and afterwards, teach their recruits how to navigate better. Everything has a start, even Wallachia's Royal Navy.
akd7CmB.png

Also, our administrative power appears to be quite high. That is good, seeing how we just wasted over 300 coring the Bulgarian provinces.

Chapter VI: Unlikely Friends

At his 23rd Birthday, Basarab, hires a Composer, Matthew Voinea, to sing about the glory of independence and security!

All feast and dance at our King's birthday party! But the older he gets, the more his nobles and Octavian, his most trusted General, ask the question: What about the heir? Who will the King leave these poor lands to? Surely not to some far away noble with no experience in ruling such a wonderful and backwards---err I mean capable nation!

A month later, it is announced that the Magyars added a new province to their nation, Ratibor to be precise.

As a result, our General recruits 2 more regiments to supplement our already large force.

Days later, it appears that our King has an heir. A woman came out of nowhere, telling everyone her boy is Basarab's son, after our King spent some drunken nights at the local tavern in our Capital, bragging about defeating Charles of Hungary. Oh dear...
Wj6Rsa9.png

Well...Could've been worse...Right?
Afterwards, we finally get the message that a full administration of our new provinces has taken control. Joyous news indeed!

Following some trade disputes by Naples against Venice, the Venetian General launched a full blown invasion of the Napalese islands in Greece, and as such require our permission for military access. Accepting would grant us some favours with the merchants in Venice. So, the benefit of trade outweighs the benefit of threat.
jwyP1ZH.png

Genoa also asks for access in order to aid their Napalese Allies. We accept.

Ahh, the Bulgarians have adapted to our way of life! (Wasn't too hard, seeing they share the same religion!).
6H7M0HL.png

And then, out of nowhere, the Mongols have raided us again. Curses!
SldZACg.png

How many of our people need to live in threat of these savages? We must do something about this!
And thus that answer arrived. We are new on the world stage and no one so far have showed any friendship towards us (Not that we had anything to do with that! Honestly!).
But the Bosnians apparently wouldn't mind an alliance. We welcome our first friend!
nfu4szA.png

We also initiate a state marriage between our "Bastard" son George, and their King's daughter, Maria.
xqNdgF5.png

May this marriage strengthen our bond!

Now, it is time to search for a strategical ally. The Byantines distrust us, the Serbians hate us, the Mongols raid us and the Bulgarians...Well you know.
So who else?

General Octavian suggested to Basarab an alliance with Hungary. Just because he was the Kings most loyal servant, was the only thing that kept his head on his shoulders for such a suggestion. But the King knew he was surrounded, but an alliance with his former Overlord seemed prepostorous!
i19j6ps.png

Months later, the Horde attacked a Russian principality over tribute payment. This cannot go on any further. The King and the General know this. An alliance with our former Overlord might seem out of the realm of imagination, but given the current circumstances, its our best solution.

Serbia, feeling surrounded themselves by our triple alliance, went in to request the protection of the Venitians. Smart of them. But we have no quarrel with them at all. Too bad they do not wish to be our friends.
zTjAEn6.png

We also recruit a fortification expert seeing how if our future attacks fail upon the Mongols, at least they will not take our provinces that easily.

General Octavian already drew the plan for future invasion. The sea will be our weakness, as the Mongols most likely have a massive fleet.

Checked the ledger, their fleet consists of (0/7/4/3), in total 14 ships. That's 11 more than me. Very worried about these Mongols.
Also, will write in next update tomorrow. Too tired right now..

Indeed. Serbia does seem to have a more 'conquering urge' in VeF.
