So. Playing my first HTTT game...unified Russia with Muscovy...and got the dreaded Time of Troubles (why this little bit of historical determinism is in the game is beyond me, especially if your Russia is stable). Anyways, my Time of Troubles has been dragging on..and on...and on...much longer than the 15 or so RL years.

Is there a way to find out when it is supposed to end, and if not, is there a console command to force it to end. I'm getting really tired of being wracked with constant rebellions despite having what would normally be a very stable country.

This is the event that ends ToT.

Code:
# Stability returns

So if you are completely fed up with it type event 3008 in the console. Otherwise you just have to wait it out. The event has a chance to occur if you don't have a single revolt, are not at war and have 1 stability.

If you are wanting to go for a legit approach rather than the console... try hiring some judge advisers or whatever they are called :) Also a 5 or 6 star statesman will reduce the MTTH of the event.
Hope this helps

This:

is what's causing you so much headache. Russia is gigantic, and in order for the event that ends to time of troubles to even have a chance of firing, you need not a single rebel army within your borders. Which is likely impossible.

Tbh, if it's dragged on long enough, just bring up the console and type 'event 3008' in.

Yeah, this is the problem. Other than when I dipped for Westernization, I've kept my stabillity constantly over 1. Due to the size of my empire, I have multiple revolts breaking out monthly - and this is with stability 3 and courthouses everywhere. My Time of Troubles has been going on nearly 50 years now and I'm tired of it. ;)

You can actually get this with any nation that fulfills the criteria so it's not that deterministic :)

What's the criteria? When this event struck me my nation was perfectly stable with a legitimate heir. Which is what made it all the more frustrating - it came out of nowhere and won't go away! ;)

It is based upon sliders... basically you just got very unlucky:

Code:
# Time of Troubles
country_event = {

	id = 3001

	major = yes

	trigger = {
		num_of_cities = 5
		NOT = { has_country_flag = time_of_troubles }
		NOT = { centralization_decentralization = -2 }
		NOT = { aristocracy_plutocracy = -2 }
		NOT = { serfdom_freesubjects = -2 }
		war = yes
	}

	mean_time_to_happen = {
		months = 432

		modifier = {
			factor = 0.9
			NOT = { aristocracy_plutocracy = -3 }
		}
		modifier = {
			factor = 0.9
			NOT = { aristocracy_plutocracy = -4 }
		}
		modifier = {
			factor = 0.9
			NOT = { centralization_decentralization = -3 }
		}
		modifier = {
			factor = 0.9
			NOT = { serfdom_freesubjects = -3 }
		}
		modifier = {
			factor = 0.9
			NOT = { serfdom_freesubjects = -4 }
		}
		modifier = {
			factor = 0.6
			revolt_percentage = 0.1
		}
		modifier = {
			factor = 0.9
			NOT = { stability = 0 }
		}
		modifier = {
			factor = 0.9
			NOT = { stability = -1 }
		}
		modifier = {
			factor = 0.9
			NOT = { stability = -2 }
		}
		modifier = {
			factor = 1.1
			stability = 1
		}
		modifier = {
			factor = 1.1
			stability = 2
		}
		modifier = {
			factor = 1.1
			stability = 3
		}
	}

	title = "EVTNAME3001"
	desc = "EVTDESC3001"

	immediate = {
		set_country_flag = time_of_troubles
		stability = -2
	}
	option = {
		name = "EVTOPTA3001" # Dire times are ahead of us
		prestige = -0.01
	}
}

And while we're at it, there is a the somewhat similar "peasant war" which also gives +10 revolt risk and a troublesome event chain. The triggers are

Code:
	trigger = {
		num_of_cities = 5
		NOT = { has_country_flag = peasant_war }
		government = feudal_monarchy
		NOT = { serfdom_freesubjects = -2 }
		centralization_decentralization = 2
	}

It should be a short-time priority to change your sliders and government form away from these two events. ( To avoid peasant war, just change to despotic monarchy )

Am I reading this right?
Being a serf based aristocratic nation will prevent the event, or do I have that backwards?

You're reading it backwards. If your aristocracy and serfdom sliders are both less than -2 you will get this event.

Aristocracy is somewhat beneficial early in the game, when cavalry is still dominant and you get lots of diplomats too.

So the best way to avoid both ToT and Peasant's War is to simply bring your serfdom-free subjects slider to -2 or a larger value. Over the long run, you'd want to do that anyway, to improve your research, economy, etc.

Yep, as a whole, the best way to deal with these events is to make sure that they can't fire in the first place.

There really ought to be some event similar to this that would fire for nations with too free subjects if the objective is to make the serfdom/freesubjects slider a bit more balanced. Somehow I don't see making you subjects freer being the best possible solution at all times, or at least not in the short run, for an early modern state...
