I have a strange bug where time acceleration will not work - at all. No amount of clicking or mashing 1/2/3 on my keyboard does a thing. It starts as soon as I create a new game. Even with absolutely nothing on the map, time acceleration still does not work at all. So far I've only been able to start one game where it worked, and it still was not as fast as my friend's game is, and when I saved it and loaded it up the next day, time acceleration was suddenly broken.

I have an Acer laptop, i7, 4GB Nvidia graphics card and 16GB of RAM, so I have ruled out the possibility of my laptop being unable to handle the game.

There are the solutions I have tried:
  • I have set the game to use the Nvidia graphics card, not the integrated one (which did fix the FPS problems I was having)
  • reinstalling the game (three or four times now)
  • downing the graphics to literally nothing

This bug or whatever is going on isn't listed as an official 'known bug' on Paradox's Steam forum, so I'm worried that there might not be a future patch for it. So far I have only managed to find two other people who have this problem where it seems to be unrelated to computer performance.

EDIT: Time acceleration seems to work on the first map choice available (it's the Plains, if I'm not wrong), but none of the other maps. I've yet to create a full test city to see if it still works after playing for a while and then saving, exiting and reloading. As I mentioned above, the one game I did manage to get it mostly working on broke again after saving and reloading.

Sounds interesting. It seems that your computer should be able to keep up with faster acceleration.
It's dependent on the population size though. When you go to the huge city numbers you see that even my very good desktop processor and beast gpu provides rather little improvement on 2 and 3.

Here's an example of small town and good processor (i7 4670 equivalent) acceleration differences:

Here's a 400k pop city from Workshop. It slows down considerably.

(recording slowed the speed down slightly - there is clearer difference between 1 and 2 in a normal session for me)

Windmills at the top video should be easiest to spot differences from.

Yeah, but this is happening even with absolutely nothing on the map. No roads, no zoning, no citizens, and it still refuses to accelerate. I've discovered that it seems to work on the very first available map, but not the others ones. I haven't created a test city to see if the working acceleration is permanent or not, because as I mentioned in the original post, in the city I managed to get it to somewhat work on it broke again after saving and loading it up the next day.

Yes, try to diagnose a bit more. It would be useful to know if it gets broken when you use a load save or is it also broken for new game on different terrain types.

Try to test these:
1) Does it work on new game on plains?
2) Save. Load. Does it still work on the loaded game. If not, close the game by exiting to desktop, start it again and go straight to load. Does it work now?
3) Does it work on other maptypes?

Alrighty, after doing some testing, here are my results:

The test game I started on Plains (and started zoning/etc, I'm at about 1K population right now) works when saved and loaded, even when I fully exited the game and loaded up the save then. So that's a plus! The Plains map seems to not have the particular bug. Every time I load up a game on that file, acceleration works. It works sporadically on the other maps, but the map I had the most success with was Riverrun. All other maps it didn't really work at all, and when I had success with other maps before, it was not as fast as I knew the game could go, and when I started a new game on the same map, more often than not time acceleration remained broken. Sometimes the other maps work, sometimes they don't, but more often they don't.

Conclusion: It seems to be something buggy with the maps themselves. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Plains map doesn't end up bugging for some stupid reason, and perhaps I can make another city in the future on Riverrun.

It seems weird because if you've done 3-4 reinstalls already and are still getting troubles in some maps but not others.
Hope you can play with the working ones. If there's more similar issues it will probably get solved sooner.
Maps are indeed probably worth looking for the cause when CO starts to debug this.

Fingers crossed indeed, have fun.
