Of Things That Go Boom
1692
Sure, What Harm Can It Do?
To trigger a world-shaking ritual while the conditions are suboptimal, your attention is on the hordes besieging your capital, and one of the three locations you were to hold has recently been captured by an enemy, AND you have been informed that going ahead ANYWAY could incur a significant backlash….
Smoke rises from Ceylon, Quetta, and Enkan, and it is not from volcanoes or ritual sacrifices either… It rises from the very ground. In the centre of each area, a mighty beacon has been lit that throws brilliant rays of a red hue into the night sky and around it, the earth smokes and heats. The ritual works! However, it is not completely successful. Distracted by the ongoing war and the strain of enacting the ritual despite Mughal control of Quetta, Brother Reoyl is not as fully in control as he should have been and a significant magical backlash is unleashed. The surface turns molten as the bane-fire spreads in a quick flash from the beacon to the outmost reaches of each area… When dawn breaks, the beacons are still burning brightly but the fire and smoke is gone, but the countryside is in serious need of redecoration.
In game effects: Enkan (615), Quetta (1524), and Ceylon (576, 577) suffer the following fate:
- New Demography: 42 people survive in each province
- To War No more: Any army in the affected area destroyed
- No More Taxes: Tax value set to ZERO in all four provinces
- Reconstruction: All improvements destroyed in all four provinces
- Subsistence Farming: All four provinces now produce grain
(Meanwhile, in Thar, Amzad sighs in relief that he moved out of Quetta sometime during 1690-1691.

)
The backlash also strikes Reoyl himself ensconced as he is in his capital of Bali. His body and spirit are struck by wild magical energies, and the Masters he hoped to please by his actions are not particularly interested in saving him from his own folly. In fact, they are somewhat annoyed at the less than perfect performance of the rituals, which were meant to grant them an easy access to the world but which will now do so much less, and enjoy watching as Reoyl’s spirit is twisted by the energies he unleashed so carelessly:
In game effects: Reoyl suffers the following penalties
- He loses 1 DIP, 1 ADM, 1 MIL permanently
- He loses 1 move, 1 fire, 1 shock permanently
But even as he screams in the agony that will become familiar, a constant companion for the rest of his life, Reoyl snarls with what can only be called pleasure. He can feel a creature of the vasty deeps answering his call: He will have a new leader for his navies that others can only envy… [2/4/6 Kraken admiral, no upkeep, will live until destroyed]
And this is just the least of his new powers… Reoyl feels in better control of his body and spirit than ever before, and he knows that he has several new abilities that others could only envy – if they knew of them. (Which fortunately they do not) And if he has given up some part of his humanity to reach this, well, there was not all that much left to begin with and it is a small loss really compared to the POWER he has been granted. Let those who have mocked him previously know fear, for it is time for payback. [In-game effects: These effects will only be revealed to the Reoyl… Everybody else will just have to wait and see what happens]
