Of Things That Go Boom
1692
Sure, What Harm Can It Do?
To trigger a world-shaking ritual while the conditions are suboptimal, your attention is on the hordes besieging your capital, and one of the three locations you were to hold has recently been captured by an enemy, AND you have been informed that going ahead ANYWAY could incur a significant backlash….

Smoke rises from Ceylon, Quetta, and Enkan, and it is not from volcanoes or ritual sacrifices either… It rises from the very ground. In the centre of each area, a mighty beacon has been lit that throws brilliant rays of a red hue into the night sky and around it, the earth smokes and heats. The ritual works! However, it is not completely successful. Distracted by the ongoing war and the strain of enacting the ritual despite Mughal control of Quetta, Brother Reoyl is not as fully in control as he should have been and a significant magical backlash is unleashed. The surface turns molten as the bane-fire spreads in a quick flash from the beacon to the outmost reaches of each area… When dawn breaks, the beacons are still burning brightly but the fire and smoke is gone, but the countryside is in serious need of redecoration.

In game effects: Enkan (615), Quetta (1524), and Ceylon (576, 577) suffer the following fate:
  • New Demography: 42 people survive in each province
  • To War No more: Any army in the affected area destroyed
  • No More Taxes: Tax value set to ZERO in all four provinces
  • Reconstruction: All improvements destroyed in all four provinces
  • Subsistence Farming: All four provinces now produce grain

(Meanwhile, in Thar, Amzad sighs in relief that he moved out of Quetta sometime during 1690-1691. :D)

The backlash also strikes Reoyl himself ensconced as he is in his capital of Bali. His body and spirit are struck by wild magical energies, and the Masters he hoped to please by his actions are not particularly interested in saving him from his own folly. In fact, they are somewhat annoyed at the less than perfect performance of the rituals, which were meant to grant them an easy access to the world but which will now do so much less, and enjoy watching as Reoyl’s spirit is twisted by the energies he unleashed so carelessly:

In game effects: Reoyl suffers the following penalties
  • He loses 1 DIP, 1 ADM, 1 MIL permanently
  • He loses 1 move, 1 fire, 1 shock permanently

But even as he screams in the agony that will become familiar, a constant companion for the rest of his life, Reoyl snarls with what can only be called pleasure. He can feel a creature of the vasty deeps answering his call: He will have a new leader for his navies that others can only envy… [2/4/6 Kraken admiral, no upkeep, will live until destroyed]

And this is just the least of his new powers… Reoyl feels in better control of his body and spirit than ever before, and he knows that he has several new abilities that others could only envy – if they knew of them. (Which fortunately they do not) And if he has given up some part of his humanity to reach this, well, there was not all that much left to begin with and it is a small loss really compared to the POWER he has been granted. Let those who have mocked him previously know fear, for it is time for payback. [In-game effects: These effects will only be revealed to the Reoyl… Everybody else will just have to wait and see what happens]

Oh, Chagatai is not unhappy. Perhaps brother Qutb will now find it easier to back out from Siberia, because the goal of Alvaro has not changed.

Following Alesso's conversation with Gothmog and Gothmog's admittance to the death of BrotherX Alesso pondered the matter for some time. On the one hand the confession was quite a shock and opened up disturbing avenues of thought that Alesso found his mind shying away from, on the other though his remaining brothers deserved to know the fate of one of their kin and in all conscience Alesso could and would not keep from information from them.

Alesso would tell his brothers but take no action against Gothmog for the death of his brother. Perhaps it was pride speaking or simply folly that guided his actions but Alesso saw this as perhaps the greatest opportunity of his life - he had tried to guide his brothers with some success though no little failure, but here was a creature who admitted to having no concept of right and wrong, a blank soul as it were who looked to Alesso for guidance! How could he reject such a plea? Was he foolish to think that perhaps here, in this being from another plane was someone who he could mold into becoming his successor? He despaired of finding such elsewhere though had no given up all hope.

Elsewhere in his mountain monastery a great sadness swept over the Priest King. Alesso had ignored all his warnings and also those of his master the Jade Emperor, in his pride thinking that the evil entering the world had been vanquished with Brother Confucius' defeat, yet the Priest King knew different...

[Everyone in-game can consider themselves privy to the information revealed in the Gothmog/Alesso conversation now.]

The Mughals have lost a core province, deep in their realm. We have lost a large army positioned in it. We have to move around this hole now with troop movement...This is a sad, sad day.

Now, good peace deal I have to say. Reoyl was quite benevolent to give us the mess he created back :D

Alesso does not consider brother Reoyl as a greater evil then Confucius?

Alesso keeps a close eye on Reoyl, but he hardly compares to the things Confucius did in Egypt and then Bengal now does he.

Peace is struck this day with Brother Reoyl:

After negotiations during which Qutb asked Alesso to intervene and lead the talks Reoyl agreed to the following peace terms:

Timor to Alesso
Samar to Qutb
Mekong Delta to Gothmog
Quetta returned to Mughals
Mapsharing with any who want it.

War will only continue long enough for the required provinces to be occupied, otherwise hostilities are now at an end.
The Serene Gothmog makes notice that he accepts this treaty so long as it is clearly understood by all parties that all hostilities are at an end, both military and thaumaturgical. For instance he will consider the launching of a sorcerous attack by any treaty partner on another treaty partner to render the treaty null and void.

This really should go without saying, but given that Qutb is mad as a hatter and Reoyl is clearly a homicidal maniac in love with mass casualties, he just felt like pointing it out. :D

Welll, it is hard to judge, really. One was a firm supporter of "Your sacrifice - my power", the other of "Nuke 'em till they glow, then shoot 'em in the dark"... :)

One can't but wonder how much more BOOOM it would have gone if Alvaro hadn't been there stopping Reoyl from grabbing Enkan. A fact that everybody seem to try to forget.

Given that it is close to impossible to know who is behind an attack, and no doubt there will be attacks on treaty partners or Mataram by other parties, it seems that the treaty is null and void already. For Gothmog, that is, I hope the other parties adopt a more sensible position, like excluding Gothmoc from the peace negotiations and leaving him to face the full wrath of Mataram :D

Amzad's occupation of Quetta was a strongly contributing factor. Just a crying shame that Amzad personally moved out of the province before the session ended. Otherwise he might have attempted, dramatically and at great personal risk with no regards for his own safety, to halt the ritual. :D

Thanks for reminding. Alvaro now holds the top position on my 'plot to get annexed' list :D
Ahh, a good plan! Wait, it is not exactly a new idea... I think all but Alesso have been at war with Alvaro, all of them have tried annex Chagatai.

Of course there is that slight problem that annexing Chagatai lands will result in +280 BB, and even if five brothers and a demon would try to divide that pain they'd still get som +40 BB each :D

It is not fun to be Poor and Crappy(TM), but the burden is a bit easier to carry having 70+ provinces, because somebody would have a heck of a lot of crappy provinces to take to make Alvaro go permanently down (it is hard to fall further down from the cellar) :p

Reoyl would have been in the posession of Enkan years before that if Alvaro had given in to Reoyls demands. When other brothers are weak in mind, Alvaro will stand with a stiff upper lip and not give in for any demands made at gunpoint.
