I've run into that same problem. Try a couple of different provinces. Eventually, you should find one or more than can recruit mercenaries. No idea how that works, but it is certainly unpleasant!

Oh, and way ahead of you on the drink. Made mine a triple thanks to the filthy hangover I have today.

A regency council and you voluntarily took a -1 stab hit to -3. I see what you mean by worse. Well you did get a chance to fight Castille and Tunis but ignored them.I'm more surprised the ai actually got something out of the Timurids for the Order.

Finish off persia and take two provinces and money off them, hold your nerve and send 13,000 reinforcements to the front under a newly minted general (killer) This will leave you a bit light of troops at home, but it's make or break time. Then it's smash mouth with those Timurid armies.

As for Japan, last gasp try to get access through Vijayanagar. If you can't beat them, join them.

Well, it could be worse...your manpower pool could be completely empty as well...At least things are still relatively rosy. You might still pull out of this with a province or two, as long as you can hold the line for awhile. Eventually they have to run out of men and their revolt risk will have to rise about 14 plus. Just be patient....

I can understand your frustration. I've been playing a game as Burgundy and found myself bordering a menacing Austria and an crippled by repeated wars and revolts OE. Readied my troops, increased maintenance moved my mouse toward the diplomacy panel to issue a DoW on the OE when "pop": your king has died, a regency council blah blah blah... Aaaargh! It lasted somethin like twelve or fifteen years. I could do nothing but see Austria gobbling up the OE and half of Europe...

Oh, and there is indeed a cap in War Exhaustion. It is even modified by your Centralization DP slider, and possibly by Government type (do not remember which government, though).

Good luck. Or merde, as we say here.

Ouch. The cycle seems to have come courtesy of World of Pain.
The Regency Council was nasty and the lack of mercenaries is a particularly artistic twist (my guess is Austria and the TO hired them all and they haven't respawned yet - try again on the 1st of the month).
And Timurid seems to have far too many resources for a country that's been fighting losing wars for a decade or more. What are your respective Land Techs?

Well done the TO AI getting something off Timurid, but the rematch with Austria is bad news. I fear the TO may be going backwards in the Great Race.

Best of luck getting something from Timurids/Persia before the clock runs out.

Finally caught up and there were some fine moments along the way. Of all your tall tales, I think I liked the poetic descriptions of your meal by the Turkish roadside best. Well, the descriptions of the aftermath and your intimacy with a toilet bowl, to be more precise. :D

It's nice to see how different the three countries are playing out (and nice that all of them had their fair share of "Aw schucks" moments, to spare the blue language). The Sicilian Regency Council does seem like a particularly nasty happenstance. Oh well, at least you still have some of your turn left, and then you still have three turns with each country to go before time runs out (if my fingercounting was accurate, which is doubtful).

Glad I made it just in time for the climactic (or will it be anti-climactic) finale. :)

Fulcrumvale - Luck? Why sir there is no luck with the way I play the game. It’s all skill and a cunning knowledge of the statistical probabilities of which way the ball will bounce. If this sounds confusing I can only say it must be you that is confused because I passed the stage of confused a long time ago. Now I’m at the ignorance is bliss stage of game play. ;)

Coz1 - I tried them all and there were no mercenaries to hire anywhere. Shocked the hell out of me. The next month I found a grand total of ‘one’ regiment for hire and that’s all. The month after that I found six and after that I could hire as many as I needed. Go figure.

Chief ragusa - A human would never be able to get anything out of Timurid but I thought maybe the AI can and it did. Still it was a surprise.

Actually circumstances forced me to take a different tack with Japan than I’d originally planned. I just finished playing their turn and it was. . . Well, ever find yourself in a situation where all you can see is a disaster waiting to happen and then suddenly the heavens open and drop a chance for redemption right smack dab in your lap? Wait until you see what happens with Japan. Now I’m not promising a major miracle of biblical proportions in their turn. It’s more like a happy ending to a slow moving movie at a late night show where the popcorn is stale and the heats been turned off so you have to wrap your arms around yourself to keep warm and you can’t see how the hero can cross the train tracks before the steam locomotive going as fast as it can go slams into his car. It’s that kind of turn but lets finish Sicily first.

Stroph1 - -3 is for the demented or those too lost in their own dreams to worry about walking a tightrope without a net. ;)

Amric - Actually no they don’t have to run out of men. That’s the dirty little secret to this AAR. The really large countries have to be beaten over the head with a very large two-by-four before they will even blink. Timurid have been at war for most of the last 20 years and still they show absolutely no signs of running out of men. There are pauses between the waves of men they throw my way and if I only played Sicily I’m sure that after a few decades of constant war I could break them but that’s looking like a pipe dream right now. The war exhaustion limit is I’m afraid going to be the back breaker unless I figure out a way around it. I haven’t yet but don’t give up.

Nil-The-Frog - I wish I knew about the cap in war exhaustion before I decided that was the answer to my problems. Hell I suppose I should read the manual but what ‘s the fun in that? :D

Murmurandus - It dulls the pain of watching another 20-30 thousand man army head my way. Although the vibrations of their marching feet does play havoc with my hangover.

Merrick - I’m several land techs ahead of them and that does help a lot so I’m able to win most of the battle. The problem is I can’t finish the Timurid armies off so I have to be methodical in my advance, which makes for slow going. No mad charges across no man’s land for a quick victory. It’s more like one step at a time, which means I can never capture enough before my time runs out. Especially whem you lose several years to a regency council. Sigh.

After a good nights sleep I returned to the game and I’m feeling rejuvenated and ready for the challenge, kind of. I’m finally able to hire mercenaries again so I’m ready to rumble with Timurid once again.

They renew their attacks in the Mediterranean Sea and I have to hunt them down like the dogs that they are. Felt kind of good if you ask me.
1719JuneTimuridfleet.jpg

Meanwhile I’ve taken a defensive posture in the Middle East as I repel repeated attacks from Timurid.
1719AugustTimuridcounterattack.jpg

Persia also attacks putting additional pressure on my front lines but I’m able to defeat them and counter attack into Basra where I win the battle and start a siege. I’m sending peace offers to Persia just asking for one province but they keep refusing the offer so the war continues.

In 1720 I have the chance to select a New National Idea and I select Glorious Arms. I need the prestige from land battle +33% because the enemy has better leaders than I have and since I’m using more and more mercenaries its hell to raise my land score enough to get anything above mediocre leaders. Also in January I finally get up to -2 stability and right after that I get one of those god given events that make you kick up your heels and dance for joy as I get +3 to mu stability. My stability level is now at +1, I can’t remember when it was this high and I feel like my head is in the clouds and I’m breathing rarified air.

Still early in 1720 the front heats up and battles are almost constant. I’m able to win most of the battles and hang on to what I have for now.
1720Februaryattacks.jpg

In May of 1720 Kazan declares war on the Teutonic Order. Kazan has grown rather large at the expense of Moscowy so this may not be an easy war. Yemen declares war against Persia. Perhaps this will distract them enough for me to win the war?

All through 1720 Timurid attacks but I’m able to stop them and slowly replace my loses. In addition I’ve split my fleet so that I can ferry mercenaries to the Middle East and still hunt down those pesky Timurid fleets.
1720Octobersituation.jpg

Finally in October 1720 Persia agrees to give me Murgan for peace. I now have a permanent border with Timurid. However that creates this strange situation.
1720NovemberTimuridretreatsnobattle.jpg

The Timurid army which was besieging Hamadan that I captured during the war with Persia has to leave once I reached a peace agreement with Persia and they retreat through a province that I’m besieging without having to fight. Just thought that was strange.

December 1720 and Makassar revolts and declares war against Japan. Odds are they will keep their new found independence and at this point in the game it doesn’t matter.

So how is the war going between Austria and the Teutonic Order? Lets look shall we.
1720Austria.jpg

By 1721 I’m finally able to start my offense again and attack i to Dash-I-Lut just as I reach land tech 21.

In June 1721 Lithuania declared war against the Teutonic Order. Ouch, ouch, ouch.

In August 1721 I get a message that Riga joined in an alliance with the Teutonic Order? I didn’t see a message but I wonder if Austria demanded that the Teutonic Order release Riga for peace?

By the end of the year I’m making steady if slow progress against Timurid. So I figure what the hell lets do a little raid in force and see what there is to see.
1721explore.jpg

In early 1722 I get my first decent leader in god knows how many decades. Fire 1, shock 5, siege 1, maneuver 0. Before Glorious Arms I wasn’t getting anything remotely this good, which shows you how bad my leaders were.

My raiding force has finally reached Badakhshan so I figure why not besiege it. While I’m there I discover where the Timurid are raising their reinforcements. Altogether there were over 20,000 men in these three provinces.
1722reinforcements.jpg

And as you can see on the left the Timurid was attacking in Fars with over 10,000 men. The Timurid seemingly have no limits to their manpower.

Sweden offered me an alliance, which I turned them down but I snuck a peak at TOs war and saw this.
1722Lithuania.jpg

Not looking good for the good guys.

It shows in January 1721 that there is a separate Riga in existance, checkout the picture before the question...

So things are on the edge of a knife right now. Hope you can keep battling the pesky Timurids. Just a few more pushes and the ground is set for Japan.

A scarily big Austria-Burgundy that has devoured Central Europe. Just as well the two can't stand each other. Meanwhile the Teutonic Order looks like it's TOast. Out of the running for the goal province. Jumped by Lithunia, Navarra and Genoa. Too much for Gotland, which decided even flag waving for the Order was too much this time. Looks like you will need a miracle from God for the Order to compete in this race.Sicily is allied to Burgundy, so may get caught up in Austro-Burgundian wars. Japan may win this race yet.

The Japanese miracle - must be: starts with stability -2, 2,000 men in the manpower pool and 300 ducats in the treasury. Better would be a Vijayanagar break up in the north and mighty Japan storms through.

Why is Sicily besieging the goal province when you know where the Timurids are raising troops? Those three provinces taken ends significant Timurid resistance. Persia is still refusing to see reason. I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry. Is there time in Sicily's turn for you to grab the goal province in peace?

Looking forward to Japan's time in the light and pondering the situation you will find when you take up the reigns of the Teutonic Order once again.

This turn with Sicily was ace! Well over my expectations.

Poor TO though, it's gonna get really thin and slender after the Austro-Lithuanian bear hug  If BB is not the reason for all this hatred I wonder if it is because most of Europe has gone protestant/reformed and the Order is still catholic (and of course the AI being the AI, it never bothered to change tolerance sliders?)

I've been neglecting this AAR for a while which is a travesty on my part, but I have returned. I can't help but remember MrT's Timurid AAR when he intentionally tried to stay below 0 stability. However, you are pulling Sicily up quite nicely here.

Um, here's a question....Why aren't you putting a fleet at the Straits of Gibraltor? I don't see a Timirid province in the Med...so if they have to go all the way around Africa...you could keep them contained at Gibraltor and not have to go haring off all over the Med to get them. Just a thought.

BTW, nicely done getting to the goal province so far. Here's the thing. If you can manage to go after those three massive armies and crush them and then besiege those provinces the massive Timirid reinforcements should dry up. I thought this might prove useful, if you can in fact accomplish it. I don't know if you have the troops to do it, but it might be worthwhile trying.

Pity about the TO, but I did kind of wonder if there wouldn't be some kind of backlash to their expansion.

Oh, my - Sicily actually got troops to Badrackastan? It's a good thing I'm sitting down already. While I'm seated I'll say, 'Fare-thee-well TO.' Lithuania may just gobble up that corridor to the east.

Joe, nobody else I know could have gotten this far. Heck, nobody I know would have even tried, but that's beside the point.

Congratulations - even if you can't besiege it or keep it, you got there.
