You had to cede a province and it was the one I'd have given up.

How many Timurid provinces are held by rebels and how many still held by the governement? Keep an eye on the war during Sicily's turn as the ai could be about to trigger a turbo-annexation. And there was I thinking it would easier be to get a warscore to vassalize the Timurids. I don't smoke. Just the right result off Sibir.

A one-legged man can at least jump off the ground and kick someone in the ass, whereas Gotland is just an island without a cog.

I did notice that after that deaf cat of yours let out an ear piercing squeal, you did much better.

Here's hoping for the Event : The Timurid governement has fallen.

Can Sicily actually march to the lands of the Teutonic Order?

Badakhshan is the target, right? I couldn't help noticing it borders Ming

Let's all keep our fingers crossed wishing that Ming doesn't decide to gatecrash the party and take Badakhshan off a crumbling Timurid empire before anyone else

Thanks for the advice Joe, I'll keep it in mind next time I go there.

Now looking forward to my favourite turn... Go, Sicily, go!!

I am shocked you killed that entire Tim. army too. Luck perhaps? :p

Still, it is fun seeing the front lines move just a bit more each time. I probably would have done the same with Austria as far as that goes. And if you keep this up, perhaps you can get all three at war with the Tim.'s at once. ;)

You know...I have the same sinking feeling about the TO AI....If it goes for a white peace all that work you did will be for naught...which would seriously suck. Let's hope that it doesn't decide it WANTS that province next to Ming...:)

The war against the Timurids is progressing nicely. I wonder how the AI will muck it up (unless of course you finish it before that)?

Impressive AAR and very enjoyable.
After japans turn I was beginning to think that you where getting nowhere, but then the TO makes the move. And now Sicily "just" need to dow the moment AI TO makes peace and Timurids "should" fall to revolt and the unstoppable Sicilian army.
And on a side note.. there are some complains out, that the AI leaves the countries at -3 stab, with no MP and in some useless war... now what do you think the AI thinks of your performances?!! From the looks of it, the TO's AI might think just the same :p at least the AI doesn't add a new religion now and then!!

anyway with a little bid of luck there can be some very interesting years ahead where Sicily, TO and well Ming fights it out. good luck

Wow, that Austria is... is... serious, I guess is as good a word as any. Though when Austria borders the TO you know the rest of Europe is in trouble.

You're making progress toward your goal, but that is one peculiar shape for the TO empire.

Here's wishing you... um, one of you... success in getting to BadBack-A-Stan.

The wars just keep on getting worse (here's hoping Sicily is in some sort of shape when you take it over. Hey, one out of three isn't too bad.)

Congratulations on getting out of the war with Austria - I have to say I was looking at your position and thinking "death spiral". Still, I'd have offered them Mecklenberg instead of Vorpommern - as it is Mecklemberg is pretty much lost anyway, since the AI has no way to get troops there to put down the inevitable revolt.

And congratulations on white peace with the Timurids (hey, you know it's coming, right?)

And you do realise that if Badakhshan revolts away it'll join Ming?

germanpeon – I handled Austria so easily by just falling down and crying like a baby. They took pity on me and just took one province.

With the Timurids ‘persistence’ was the key.

Deus – The Timurid show no signs of slowing down. For every man they lose they send two replacements. This is the first war where I haven’t reached a point where I thought I’d turned the corner and it was all over but the shouting. Still if I was just playing the TO I would eventuality be able to break them. As it is all I can hope for is that the AI for the TO keeps the war going long enough for Sicily to be ready to step up to the plate and start beating Timurid over their head with a big bat.

The two front war wasn’t too bad to handle except for one mistake that sealed my fate in the West. I used my single army in the West to attack a small Austrian army besieging one of my provinces. They won the battle but I left them in that province, which was a mistake. My attention was focused in the East when Austria counter attacked and before I knew what hit me I lost the battle and found myself with just over 2,000 men left in that army. So I no longer had any credible force left in the West. That was just before I offered a sacrificial province for peace.

Insanity Boy – Since I’ve just played the first 5 years of Sicily’s turn I’ll take that bet and raise it to $100 that the Teutonic Order gets more than a white peace. :D

Boyss – I’ve found that the AI becomes more stubborn with the more it gets as a war score. (I know obvious) I’ve had experiences where the AI grabs a couple of provinces and asks for one in a peace agreement and I turn them down because I’m sure I can win if I just try a little longer. The problem is if the AI continues to take a couple of more provinces then it can start asking for more and get ‘really stubborn’ about it. I didn’t want to let the AI get anywhere close to a war score where it could go ‘stubborn’ on me. So I rolled over and played dead.

Murmurandus – I didn’t have much choice when the Timurid refused my peace offer. Let’s see, I left Japan with a +24% war score and they gave away a province for peace and the Teutonic Order has a +31% war score. Maybe they will do better than Japan? ;)

oddman – Yes Badakhshan is the target. Ming has been very quiet for the last few decades. Maybe it’s fallen asleep (I hope)? It hasn’t expanded ant toward the West for some time but if Timurid starts falling apart will Ming join in on the fun?

Chief Ragusa – So far Timurid is doing a good job of putting down revolts. I’ve seen no more that two provinces at a time revolt away and they are recaptured by Timurid before they can defect to another country of declare independence. I fear they are a long way from imploding.

Gotland is a hair on a hairy wart on the face of an ugly woman. How ugly is she? She so ugly when she walks by a bathroom all the toilets flush.

Sicily can’t walk to the Teutonic Order but then they don’t have to for my master plan (or whatever it’s called) to work.

aldriq – Let’s not even whisper the name Ming. If they become involved I’m in deep trouble.

coz1 - I think the program has a hiccup that causes armies to disappear. It’s rare but I’ve heard of it happening to others.

Ahua Mazda – A funny thing happened to Sicily on the way to the war. More on that at the end of this post.

Amric – Well the TO did get something in the war but not that province. Hey I saw a two star artist advisor while playing Sicily. Finally! They do exist!

Vann the Red – Ground Chuck was one of the more entertaining coach’s when it came to interviews. And he sure liked to run the ball didn’t he!

Fulcrumvale – All I want the AI to do it keep Timurid at war. How hard can that be? Well we’ll find out soon.

Indiana_Jojo – I agree after Japan I was thinking that I was in big trouble. The Teutonic Order and Sicily, because of Terra Incognito, couldn’t realistically get to the goal and Japan was too weak so it looked like I was out of luck. Fortunately that’s changed. I agree with your assessment on what Sicily needs to do but. . . Well more on this at the end of the post.

Director – Luckily Sicily is allied with Burgundy and so I don’t think Austria will bother them but the Teutonic Order stands alone so another war could happen between them. I tried sending gifts to Austria while playing TO but it was costing 60 ducats a shot and I was only improving our relation 1-5 points at a time so I said screw this crap and stopped. It should be interesting to see if the TO can do better against Austria than I did.

Merrick – Mecklenburg was besieged by Saxony and I didn’t want to wait for it to fall because Austria was invading too many of my provinces so I couldn’t wait any longer. I think there also might be a COT in Mecklenburg but I’m not sure.

Actually I don’t know who Badakhshan will join but you’re probably right but I’m planning, or should I say hoping, to capture the province and sit on it so if Timurid breaks I will get it. Right now everything is in the early stages so I don’t know if any of this will work. Wish me luck.

Okay so I’ve played the first five years as Sicily and all I’ll say is that the turn was replete with WTF moments. I wrote most of the turn down as things were happening because I wanted to capture the true essence of what it means to be F**KED over in the game while downing glasses of vodka tonics and punching the space bar (cats weren’t around, sly little buggers) because I can’t believe what I’m seeing. To say that things didn’t go quite according to my plans would be as descriptive as saying ‘she who will not be denied’ possibly has doubts as to my sincerity when I say “Yes dear whatever you say dear”. I’d better stop here before I disclose a story so hideous, so twisted and vile that my overactive imagination is already working overtime on a conspiracy theory to explain it that will take your breath away by the sheer audacity of it. In others words I’m making it up as I go along.

Not a happy camper.

It would be fun trying to make all 3 of those countries ally with each other, but that could be a long-term objective (make japan go to europe? Might take some time... )

Edit : You could make some sort of a hostile triangle around austria and kick the hell out of them. Or not.

Cats do seem to know when not to be around because there are SANFU moments around. You did not get Rensssed, did you? The North Africa had tech parity and killer leaders. Sienna suddenly revealed a 40,000 strong army and jumped on you. What else; Castille, Portugal, the Ottomans and the Mamluks all popped round to say "hi"?

I clean forgot, Ming and Korean fleets turned up including a Ming fleet that was over 100 ships strong and not suffering from attrition, in the slightest.

Kfijatass - You touch on one of the more frustrating parts of the game. I seldom succeed in getting any country to agree to an alliance with me. Maybe I’m missing something but I’ve finally given up and just wait to see who asks me to join. Once while I was playing Japan I did see the Teutonic Order ask Sicily to join but Sicily declined. I ‘think’ Sicily is safe from Austria and by next turn the Teutonic Order is going to make a try for the goal province so there’s no time for Austria but we will have to wait and see what happens. ;)

Chief Ragusa - As far as I’m concerned what happened was worst than any of the scenarios you put forward. :(

1713 Sicily

Too good to be true?

A quick look at the Sicilian empire.
1713Sicilyempire.jpg

Well, well I’m only at -2 stability so I can declare war, cool.
1713Sicilyempire2.jpg

My manpower pool over half full and I’m at peace. Every thing is looking good so far.
1713Sicilyempire3.jpg

I don’t have much money but that’s not a problem.

1713overview.jpg

I still have Burgundy and Aragon as allies, which is more for my protection at home rather than any help against Timurid.

I’ve got 74 ships in my navy and here you see the lone transport.
1713transport.jpg

I’m pleasantly surprised that my revolt risk is so low. This turn is looking better and better.

So I’‘ve got all of a single leaky Flyte to move my men to the Middle East if I want to attack Timurid. Why is it the transports that disappear each turn? Does the AI separate them from the main fleet to use them to move that single regiment it so loves to move and they end up being sunk because they don’t have any support from war ships? Who the hell knows. I start building transports as fast as I can. I ended up with13 transports added to the navy and that made things a lot easier.

1713government.jpg

How in hell did Sicily end up full naval and full Serfdom? There must have been events because I don’t remember them being close to these settings. This doesn’t help the morale of my armies but hopefully with my land tech at level 19 I can over come Timurid’s land tech 9 and any possible morale advantages.

My economy is in fine shape with inflation down to 20.8%
1713economy.jpg

I change the slider to pump research into land instead of Production. I want all the help I can get for the coming war.

In March 1713 Korea onca again declares war against Aragon. Ming joins Korea and I bow out of our alliance. I don’t need Aragon anymore since I’ allied with Burgundy.

I also notice that the Teutonic order and Timurid reached a peace agreement where the Teutonic Order received Zheteru. Well it’s not much but it’s better than nothing. Still, a single province out of all that? Sigh.
1713TOpeace.jpg

The Timurid is at peace and we can’t have that can we? So the time has come. Destiny waits and who the hell am I to keep destiny waiting?

I move over and click on Timurid and find that the declare war tab grayed out. WTF I suddenly get a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach reminiscent of the time in 5th grade when I was standing up in front of the class giving a book report and a couple of the girls sitting up front were giggling while looking at me and I got this sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach as I tried to remember if I’d zipped up my pants after going to the bathroom.

It was just as I feared.
1713court.jpg

SON OF A , a, son of a . . .a. . . seahorse Yea you son of a tube sucking seahorse. God I’m so pissed I’ve forgotten how to cuss and I have no idea if seahorses suck tubes and for that matter I don’t care. What are the odds of this happening just at the exact moment for it to cause me the most damage possible? I can’t believe it, my master plan brought low by a Regency Council? Does it get any lower than this? Timurid just sits there all smug and bloated with peace and I can’t do a damn thing about it. I’m smelling a conspiracy in all this. Don’t know who’s involved but it must be big, real big to pull this off and shatter my dreams and hopes and all that crap.

Finally in November 1713 a ray of hope slices through the clouds of doom and gloom and Vijayanagar declares war on Timurid. Good old what’s his face Vijayanagar to the rescue. At least Timurid’s war risk will start climbing again.

In March 1714 Moscowy declares war on Timurid. Frankly I see this as suicidal on Moscowy’s part. But what the hell it’s for a good cause so go Moscowy

By December 1714 I have 13 transports and start moving my armies into position in case I ever, in this life time, before the glaciers melt and freeze again have another monarch and can declare war.

Finally I have my initial force in place for the attack if the computer gods ever decide to bless me with a Monarch.
1715ready.jpg

Revolts do keep popping up in Timurid but I still never see more than two provinces at one time succeed in revolting and they are recaptured by Timurid.

So I’m sitting here just waiting and waiting when that picayune sized Gotland asked me to join them in an alliance. By this time I was becoming numb to the blows and afflictions that were raining down on my head so I just declined dear Gotland’s offer, while muttering under my breath “piss off”.

And if that wasn’t enough it was at this time that I noticed that the war exhaustion in Timurid was stuck. It only goes up to +13.45 and then stops. WTF I didn’t know there was a limit on war exhaustion. This does put a crimp, to put it mildly, in my master plan. At this point maybe I should admit that I need to revise the Master plan but I can’t come up with an alternative so I’m stuck just waiting and waiting. . .

December was an exciting month when first Burgundy declared war against the Inca empire and I agreed to join just to keep them as allies. Then Tunisia declare war against me and their ally Castille joined in the fun. Burgundy agreed to help us out. Well I guess it gives me something to do but by February 1716 Castille offered a white peace and the war ended, Real exciting ,yea.

I decide to look around and find that there are still revolts taking place in Timurid.
1716revolts.jpg

But they never last long before being recaptured. Sigh.

August 1716 and I’m still waiting for a Monarch when Corsica successfully revolts away from Burgundy and declares war. I join Burgundy seeing this as an easy victory and I wasn’t disappointed. I also hit land tech 20 this month. In December Austria declared war against the Teutonic Order. Let’s see if they do better than me.

In July 1717 Corsica was annexed by Sicily. The same month Korea declared war once again on Aragon and the next month Fez declared war on Aragon. It raises my spirits a little seeing how wise I was getting out of that alliance. Timurid reached a white peace agreement with Vijayanagar and on checking they were already at peace with Moscowy who was forced to cede two provinces to Timurid. Still nothing that I can do.

But finally in late 1717 the gods have taken pity and granted me a new monarch.

I quickly declare war against Persia and start invading their country. Burgundy joined me but so what they won’t be of any help. I have to cancel the military access Timurid were giving me but I was finally able to declare war in November. My initial push overwhelmed the opposition and I pushed forward against both Persia and Timurid.
1718openingmoves.jpg

In July 1718 the Inca empire (remember that war) asked for a white peace and I said SURE.
The Timurid navy made it’s first appearance in the Mediterranean Sea and I spent the early part of the war chasing and sinking small fleets.

1718greatestprogress.jpg

So things are going good and I’m master of the battle field. Neither Persia or Timurid has been able to stand up to my killer army and I’m thinking maybe it was worth the wait, which is about the exact second that I should have started worrying.

1718counterattacksstart.jpg

The Timurid armies started to reach the front in growing numbers and at first they weren’t a problem. Just to help things out I moved a slider toward offensive at this time. I’ll be at -3 stability for just a year so what can it hurt? After I did it I stopped and wondered if that would hurt my morale? Duh. I do seem to remember reading about something like that but, nah I’m sure that’s not true.

Meanwhile the counter attacks grow and by December my front line is beginning to crack.
1718counterattacksgrow.jpg

I decide since I have a +40% war score with Persia I’d offer peace for Murgan (16%). They refused. Damn.

I still have plenty of men in my manpower pool but I need immediate help so I go to hire some mercenaries and I see this.
1719mercenaries.jpg

WTF I can’t hire mercenaries, anywhere. I’m too tired to cuss and my drink is empty so I’m saving the game and taking a break. You know what they say about bad things? There are always three of them. So maybe this is the last WTF moment in this turn. Yea right.

Last thoughts.

Its of little comfort that Sibir agreed to a white peace.

Well this did help.
1719PapalController.jpg

I am seriously over extended.
1719overextented.jpg

I’m raising men but unless I can hire mercenaries soon I’m going to have to pull back and retrench my position.

Time for another drink and make that a double.
