Something more about loosing ducats. If you were loosing ducats monthly, went to the economy page, adjusted the sliders to get a positive cashflow, and stayed on that page, you would see exactly what you describe. As in EU2, you must close the economy page for the changes to be registered. In Eu3, you can simply move to another tab and you'll be fine.

Took 3 lunch breaks, but I'm all caught up in the AAR and its been intriguing. I'll be sure to keep watching. I have you say you've been fairly unfortunate with Japan, in myt game I got quite lucky and Ming stayed allied with only Ryuku. So I quick smashed up Korea, and then swallowed manchu while ming was off fighting the hordes out west. After that ming turned on me and it was bad. So stay off that mainland if you can. As for the other two countries I unfort have nothing to contribute but good luck. :)

Storey: ...Remind me not to play when under the influence of cold medication.

OK. Storey, don't play when under the influence ! ! ;)

Storey: ...The AI choose another NI, Shrewd Commerce Practice. Sigh, okay not a surprise but I really need to pick the next idea or things are going to get desperate.

hmmm. perhaps you will need to make an exception that you will not change an NI rule... :)

Storey: ...I can build regimental camps...

IIRC, very useful ! ! :D

magnificent updates ! !

Kanil - You’re right. I have no chance of getting any colonist with these slider settings.

JaxomCA - Man you aren’t kidding about big swings in COT values. I found it weird for it to swing that much from month to month but since it’s my least favorite part of the game I’ve never really spent anytime figuring it out so I’ll take your word for it.

Yep I’m neither a vassal of in a personal union so I don’t know what’s happening. I first noticed it without the economy window open. I just glanced at the top on the screen and noticed that my ducats in the treasury were going down even though I knew I was minting money. At that point I opened the economy window and did as you said “adjusted the sliders” to get a ‘more’ positive cash flow and left the window open so maybe I compounded the problem but it wasn’t caused in the beginning this way. By the way thanks for the info and suggestions you’re proving to be more knowledgeable than me in the inner workings of the game.

Ah you’re probably right and it was a Ming fleet.

Duke of Wellington - A dull turn brought on by my the situation and a serious head cold. Sicily turns out a tad bit more exciting.

Amric - There you go being prophetic on me again. :D Just read the next post and you will see what I mean.

Excel - Thanks for reading. As I’ve said before I seldom take a game where I play a single country to the end of the time frame but with multiple countries I always play to the end because you never know what is going to happen. If you have the time scan my EU2 three countries one goal to see what happens when you have them competing for getting the most provinces. It was fun.

Chief Ragusa - Sadly the Sicily AI has “screwed the pooch” to use an old saying. There won’t be many colonist coming from them as you’ll see in the next post.

Fulcrumvale - Well yes and no. Wait until you see the snap-shot of what they did while I was away.

Beware my Eire - Thanks for reading. In the first turn as Japan I was allied with Korea but I didn’t try to improve relations because I didn’t want to become involved in the mainland. Even with the three stooges picking on me I think I made the best decision by staying off the mainland. I’m going to need a whole lot of luck.

Stnylan - Boring or gentle it is made up for in the next turn.

J. Passepartout - Tell me about it. Has the world gone mad?

GhostWriter - None of my rules are carved in stone because I haven’t played the game long enough to know what really is the bast way to go. I may still allow the changing of the NI but not yet. After all we aren’t even half way yet. :D

I had another mishap taking snap-shots of the game. This time I managed to turn the program on but unbeknownst to me even though the icon was showing in the toolbar it wasn’t ‘high-lighted’. Whoever the idiot was who decided that you not only need to turn it on but also you need to ‘enabled’ the program should have his left testicle placed in the hands of a rabid feminist going through a difficult menopause phase and I’ll let your imagination take it from there. Because of that unnecessarily crackbrained action the shots of the game are only from the start 1563, a saved game at 1568 and the end, 1573. I’ll just have to fill in the blanks with an accurate, precise and truthful tale of heroic stands with my back to the wall as I beat back the Turkish hordes and saved, ah well you get the picture. I promise to control myself and not get too carried away, promise.

Let us begin.

1563 Sicily Who’s karma belongs to this?

Looks like the Sicily AI kicked the crap out of Venice. I mean it took every one of the provinces that Venice had in Europe. Hmm I’m building ships like crazy again. The AI in EU3 certainly doesn’t ignore the navy, which is great.
1563overview.jpg

Okay so I’m at war. Nothing to get worried about , oh I’m in two wars at once, how nice. The first has Sicily, Siena and Avignon against Tuscany and Genoa. I can live with this. I planned to take Tuscany down so why not now? I have no interest in Genoa at this time so if I can jettison them from the war as quicky as I can all the better. My second war is more serious. I’m fighting alone against the Ottomans, Wallachia and Candar. I’ve already lost Dalmatia to the Turks so I have to figure out how to get it back and that’s not going to be easy. So let’s see I’m fighting against five countries. Sounds fair. Might as well tie one hand behind my back and make it interesting.

As you can see I’ve certainly got a large enough army unfortunately more than half are mercenaries. I’ve also got those phantom navies again.
1563buildingships.jpg

156312.jpg

Good tech development and only 12.9 inflation. I’m afraid I’m going to have to kick that up a bit this turn. Can’t help it I need the money.

1563maintenance.jpg

I believe it’s official now. The AI doesn’t move the maintenance sliders so we don't have to see this again.

1563innovative.jpg

Almost fully innovative and fully decentralization? Is this when Dr. Caligari pops up and yells BOO. These slider positions certainly seem odd for what’s gong on. You have a country with colonies and multiple religions and the sliders are set to prevent missionaries and colonists. Figure that one out for me. I mean I really would like to send colonist off to the south pacific just incase I have to go that way but the AI is making that impossible. I could move a slider this turn toward Narrowminded or Centralization but what’s the sense in doing that if the AI is going to move them back? Ah the hell with it lets try an experiment. I’ll move toward Centralization this turn and when we come back let’s see if the AI moved it back. Be sure to remind me since I’m sure I’ll forget to check it out.

1563navalwar.jpg

A few naval battles? No wonder the AI is building ships. Besides I’m going to need a large navy if my future plans are going to succeed. What future plans? Sorry that’s a state secret. It’s so secret because if they got out you’d know just how hair raising crazy I am. Don’t get me wrong there is a chance that I could succeed just as I could buy a lotto ticket and win the big jackpot. Come to think of it the lotto has better odds but I’m getting ahead of myself.

Once again a reason to finish this off as soon as possible.
1563revoltrisk.jpg

Yea revolts popped up now and again but I find that singularly boring to report so let’s cut to the chase. I kicked a few revolting revolters butts before this turn was over.

1563malestorm.jpg

Opening the game and looking down at this maelstrom of action I realized that I was literally being thrown into the deep end of a cauldron of multiple wars and that I was going to have to quickly react or sink and become the bottom feeder of our three countries. So there I was trying to figure out how to succeed in pulling Sicily out of what was clearly a precarious situation when I was struck by the similarity to an incident when I was growing up. It was reminiscent of the time my family was making a cross country car trip in our new 1954 Nash rambler. We started in Tennessee heading for California and this was before the interstate was some engineer’s wet dream. We stopped at the Lake of the Ozarks where I traversed one of those early passages of life and learned how to swim. My lessons were of the old school variety, as in my dear Dad took me by the hand and led me, clutching my inflatable tube, to the lake where he removed my tube from my tight grasp before picking me up and with a mighty heave launching me out into the lake’s deep blue-green waters. I’m proud not to mention and alive to say that I performed the requisite dog-paddle and managed to make it back to shore. I can still remember my Dad’s proud grin as he helped me out of the lake just before picking me up and heaving me back into the deep blue-green waters. We’re talking some big time father-son bonding here folks. That’s what this turn felt like. No matter how many times I managed to beat back a threat another would come along and toss me back in.

So what happened? Well is as a dark and stormy night. . . Sorry about that. What happened is that I concentrated on Tuscany and Genoa. It wasn’t a hard choice with them besieging my provinces and all. The Ottomans seemed content to march up and down the Balkan coast and wave rude gesture in my direction.

Okay so with the help of the 20,000 man army I was able to play kick-ball with Genoa and Tuscany. Finally Genoa said enough is enough and bailed out of the war. Tuscany proved a harder nut to crack as the annexed Siena before I could stop them but in the end I was able to make them a vassal and later they joined my alliance. Want to bet the AI diplo-annexes them? If it were the Teutonic Order you could bet on it. We’ll have to see if the Sicily AI is of the same persuasion.

That leaves us with the Ottomans. Even though the odds were against me I wasn’t deterred from my quest of recovering Dalmatia. I mean you give the Turks a province and the next thing you know they want a country. I start moving my men into position on the east coast of Italy (assuming that Italy existed which of corse it doesn’t but you get the picture) and at the same time I move my fleet of 22 ships over to start ferrying my men across the storm tossed sea, oops sorry I’m slipping again. When they run into an equal sized Ottoman fleet. It was close. . . at first and then I watched my fleet sink to the bottom where the bottom feeders. . . wait a minute I’m repeating myself again. Anyway I lost my entire fleet. Yep every single stick afloat went down and I mean down hard. So I’m faced with the realization that it’s going to take me a hell of a long time and mega-bucks to built another fleet. So I decided to give Dalmatia to the Turks for peace. (Sure hope billy bob isn’t around to read this) Still having Dalmatia was going to be an anchor to my plans so “good riddance to bad rubbish” as my granddad would say.

Okay fast forward to 1568 because of the you know what screw up.

I’m just now getting to a point where revolts are calming down and I can start thinking about causing mischief, otherwise know as taking the first step in my master plan. You remember the one too secret to talk about?
1568revoltrisk.jpg

1568waraim.jpg

Okay here’s the first target. Cyprus controls Crete and I want it.

The war was so awesome I’m still stunned by the awesomeness of all. I just wish I had pictures of it to show you how over the top awesome it was. The short version of the story is that I won. Hmm, well that is kind of uninspiring but what do you expect with the short version? Anyway as you can see I am master of Crete.
1573waraimaccomplished.jpg

Things are back to being down right peaceful. Can the Ai keep it that way? Yea right.
1573revoltrisk.jpg

1573economy.jpg

Only raised inflation 4%. What a weenie.

I neglected to set the menu messages so I missed what the TO and Japan were doing the first half of my turn and when I reset it I saw the TO declare war on Poland around 1570. What is it with them? Are they in some kind of a testosterone induced high of self delusion caused by a glandular misfunction or is it just an egotistical example of the flea floating down river on his back while jerking off demanding that the draw bridge be raised? I want to grab them by the throat and squeeze until they see reason or black dots, whichever comes first. Here is a snap-shot of the Teutonic Order.
1573TO.jpg

So they’ve lost Warmia again? Sigh. You know what would be great in this game? If you could set the countries persona. You know make the Teutonic Order a hike your skirt up Alice and play with your dolls instead of a thickheaded neanderthal bend of proving that Darwin’s law does exist.

Japan on the other hand (no pun intend. See flea for joke) seems to know what they’re doing.
1573Japanisuptosomething.jpg

Looks like they decided to finish off Pegu, cool.

Hey, glad my infos can help you. Do take my suggestions with a grain of salt, I have yet to play a real game with version 1.3.

Sicily is looking forward to some interesting time, with the Austrians squeezing them close and whoever annexed Venice, is that Hungary? Let's not forget that alliance with Avignon, a one province minor surrounded by France, a one province minor that will have no qualms about kicking big bad France on the knee.

Good riddance on Dalmatia, let's stay focus on the goal. :)

This is one time when you do check the log to see whether Sicily picked on both alliances or got jumped on.

Sicily is doing a good job forming Italy. That looks like Aragon in Venice. youdo want an RM with them. You need to inherit Aragon. You do know how tough Aragon is to beat, from your earlier experiences learinnig EU 3. That's right, lull the Ottomans into a false sense of security. The ai is also moving Sicily more and more towards full naval. That you will have to arrest. The ai is going to leave itself unable to fight on land.

I'm sure I remember you spending the Knights gold like water on Poland and Lithuania so that the ai would not Dow them. The only way you're going to stop that is by being allied with them. Hopefully, the TO will have regained Warmia again by the time you visit them.

Is Pegu the tip of the iceberg for japanese annexation?

Okay....you got Crete...good. At least now you are heading in the right general direction. Something I AM curious about...did the AI do any more colonizing in the Americas before they lost the ability to colonize? I agree, Japan seems to have the right idea. Must be a manifest destiny thing going there. Reach the goal...reach the goal. Let nothing stand in your way. Sounds reasonable to me, anyway. I also agree with your Neanderthal analogy about the TO....It also reminds me of the advice about going to prison<not that I've ever been> which is kick the crap out of the first big guy you see and you'll gain some instant respect. However, the TO is NOT focusing on the goal. They keep dancing with Lithuania and Poland instead of going for the right stuff. Makes me wonder if the TO has a sexuality/identity crisis you are going to have to address...:)

I think the problem is the name. You have Japan. You have Sicily. You have TO. Not the Order, not Teutonic Order. Just something that sounds like BO. No wonder they have a complex. It is all in the name.

Nicely done, by the way.

Inflation’s really being pushed in 1.3. Any bets on how high it will be by the time you can get tax assessors ?

Caught up!

I had to read this one because it's from Storey, because I had loved the first opus featuring glorious Georgia and the ever so sweet and placid killer pope and also because I'm still learning how to play EU3.

I don't regret my read! :)

I have a few comments that could be useful to you next time you wonder if you should invite your vassals into alliances:

1) Vassals do not have diplomacy of their own => they can't propose or accept alliances (except from their liege) and they can't declare war (except to support their liege). The only way they could drag you into their wars is if they are DOWed. According to my experience, no country would DOW them if it doesn't want to DOW you as well. Next remark might explain why.

2) A vassal can't bail out of a war as long as it's liege is still in. This means that no one can steal or annex your vassals without you consent if you are allied with them. That's why they are not interesting preys for other countries as long as said countries are unwilling to beat the hell out of you.

I'm always appalled to see all the money you manage to earn and spend away! I'm always short on cash for a long time in my games. Oh, but I've seldom stepped above 3 or 5% inflation either, which might be an explanation...

JaxomCA - I had to go back and look but yes Hungary annexed Venice. I didn’t even noticed it happening. Just goes to show how on top on things I am. Speaking of being on top of things I haven’t even considered that Avignon would try to pick on France but looking at it I can’t say it should surprise me. So far Avignon has been minding their own business. I don’t remember them ever successfully sending any men in the wars to help that I’ve been in. I agree about Dalmatia. It would just be distraction to my master plan.

And let me tell you I have a master plan for Sicily that is so brilliant that it makes me sit up in awe and rub my temples from the pain of dreaming up such a, well, mastery plan. I mean this is true inspiration to such a degree that I think I must have been brain dead to come up with it. I haven’t been this brain dead since the time many years ago when I decided that it would be a good idea to start a camp fire with a cup of gasoline and lit cigar. Boy was that an eye opener. Do you know how weird it is to walk around without eyebrows? ‘She who will not be denied’ who was at a young and tender age remarked that I should get tattoos in place of my eyebrows. I think that’s when I fell in love with her lovely pragmatic nature. My plan for Sicily is so over the top that I’m praying, praying big time, that something, anything under the sun will happen that stops me from doing what can only be described as through the teeth and over the tongue look out liver here it comes type of lunacy. I don’t mean to imply that I have doubts that it will succeed,, no not me. It’s just that I think it has as much chance at success as I did when I was 16 on my first date with dear sweet Claire at getting a kiss. (Don’t ask)

Chief Ragusa - You want to guess who the rabble-rouser was in all this? Siena that’s who. They declare war on Venice the first time and that’s when Sicily got most of Venice. Then Siena declared war on Tuscany. Meanwhile the Ottomans jumped on Sicily and the rest is history.

One of the main problems I’m running into with EU3 is that the AI has a major mind lock with the sliders. Look at what I wrote to Amric for part of the problem. I have two or three sliders that I would like to move in a different direction but if the AI is just going to move them back then what’s the sense in screwing with them?

Amric - Funny you should ask. On the East coast of South America Sicily has a colony, uh well they had two but there was an influx of spies that caused one to burn to the ground. There is also one on the West coast of South America right by the Inca Empire. This did cause me to suddenly sit up straight and cock my right eye-brow, which means the little gray cells started working overtime. Unfortunately all this caused was a sweaty brow and little else. The problem or I should say the ‘problems’ are that with my slider positions I will get my next colonist about the time Armageddon arrives. Also I can only see two Inca provinces and I don’t believe that if I’m at war with them that I can attack into terra incognita so I can’t win the war. So I could spend the resources to build a fleet load it with men and sail halfway around the world to accomplish what?

With the Teutonic Orders my dilemma is that I’m not being forced to make a decision. I can still continue to build up in the south or take my chances moving north. I think the next turn is going to be a deciding turn.

Stroph1 - Never underestimate the power of a name. Look at it this way if you name your son Sue (cue Johnny Cash) what do you think will happen to the poor kid?

Fulcrumvale - If you think you’ve seen inflation just tighten up your seatbelt and grip the handrails because you haven’t seen anything yet. The goal doesn’t give a flea-flickers hindquarters about inflation.

Nil-The-Frog - Good to see you again sir. Hope you’re settled into your new job in France and all is going well. Now listen to me you’ve got to get over this fear of inflation. As I’ve said in other posts I don’t even begin to worry about it until it hits 20%. I mean I bleed inflation with the first pin-prick of economic misfortune. It oozes out of my pores in a steady stream of red ink that gives a new meaning to red tide alert. Yea I do exaggerate a little because it depends on the size of your country and which tech group you belong to but still it is one of the aspects of the game people worry too much about. Japan is probably going to be at greatest risk but it doesn’t matter if they are the ones to get to the goal first does it? So repeat after me. “Inflation is good.”

Vann the Red - Good to see you. I’m slowly coming around to EU3. It’s taken me awhile because of the lack of historical perspective but it is an intriguing game in many ways. One day who knows I might even master it. Yea right.

Merrick - Fortunately the next turn with Japan is one of those turns that brings a smile to my face.

oddman - Thank you for dropping by and feel free to offer advice since as you can see I need it. ;)

Murmurandus - Thank you sir I don’t know if lovely has been used in my company since Mrs. Parker, my fifth grade teacher in an embarrassment at how to describe a miserable crayon painting that I gave her muttered “How lovely.” :D
