It propably comes as a no surprise for the dear reader that since the betas were named and overall the game reached the status of beta, this forum has slowed down, gone in to decline so to speak.

Although some sparks of light (Weekly screenies and Q&A time with Johan AND the "Anything for us non-betas to do?" - thread providing the possibility to track down some information for the betas.) it seems that this forum is quite dead.

Of course it is all rational. Betas are doing their betaing, everyone has an NDA and almost all issues are already addressed one way or the other. People are already playing the game so the basics are in, and from the weekly screenshots we see that even the most advanced features are in.

It seems that the game has reached the balancing time. So people are now polishing up the game. (I may of course be way off, as I have no real knowledge, just my assumptions)

It seems to be an impossible task for any of us non-betas to suggest anything at this point of time. If it is a grand change, it is too late. If it is a small change it is in. And as for specific numbers none of us has a clue. The price of a division, the overall difficulty of the game.... We hardly know anything. Not that we should though. That is why NDAs are in.

So the participation takes place on two aforementioned levels:

1.Seeking for actual information of the history of the world ("Anything for us non-betas to do?" - thread)
2.Commenting screenshots.

Some people have asked for Paradox to "throw us a bone", so to speak, ie. to tell us something about something so we can discuss the matter, share our visions and such...

However it is to my understanding that throwing out any "bone" could only further throw the community into chaos... That mostly related to the fact that revealing anything off a paradox game would reveal some eighty different issues, partly... And that would cause people to specualte on the eighty different issues, and with speculating I do not only mean asking questions, but drawing one`s own conclusions taking them as facts and arguing around...

.....

So if I have understood correctly, the pure and sole two purposes for this grand forum are the two so often aforementioned, commenting screenies and technicalities.

And as such I would like to plea for more of them both.

The community, most propably including anyone to read this, is here to comment and help Paradox, more specifically HOI2. You can not let us in on HOI2 specifics, but the following is a list of issues that can well be "socialized":

-Event texts. We have a large variety of nationalities and representatives of dozens of different languages, and also two thousand eye pairs is good at catching a mistake (As some moderators may recall from the Sep. 3rd screenie "This unit have no mission assinged" - scenario ;) )

-Starting screen texts (Historic back rounds.... Or do you have too much material written down on the Nepal, yet? ;) )

-Leader names, party names....

IE. Anything text related. Maybe a scroll through through the flags as well? Commenting on the sprites of some units?

A few glimpses of the graphics and the in-game texts hardly ruin the game experience for anyone?

I mean people want to help as can be judged from the "Anything for us non-betas to do" - thread. (Yet again referring to that thread, I know ;) )

So then any thoughts on this?

Will the Socialists take over Paradox HQ and spread the wealth of the evil Oligarchy of the betas to the common folk (Well... That is if extra work can be compared to wealth :D ) ?

Totally agree. :)

And yes the forum is a bit dead since the Betas "went away" :(

The "Anything for us non-betas to do" thread at least provides something constructive to do.
(BTW - It is amazing how little information there is in english on South American businesses and people from HoI period - even my STATE LIBRARY came up with nothing  )

It would be nice to know what, if anything, our discussions here can achieve?

I asked to sign up as a Beta to help with the manual - if it was posted here we could all help? But then again - it would give away too much wouldn't it? :(

Maybe it's time to start creating sub forums? Then again - too early. They would get full of spam.

Yawn.

Yes I agree - another right on the mark post idealist ;)

You're right the forum is now rather circular with the air supply thread starting off every 2.6 weeks, and the other stalwart topics.

There's the odd bit of interest with that funny little cavalry thread which everyone gets excited about but ....

No answers I'm afraid but you do have my support :D

It's really more of a proletariat, as far as I can see . . .! ;)

Proofreading? I think that's a good idea. It's tedious and time-consuming when considered as a project whole, which would make it exactly the kind of thing that would be worth taking off the hands of those who have much more important things to do. :)

Almost twenty thousand posts in a forum for a game that's not yet gone gold is certainly not indicative of a dead forum in my opinion.

If you've got time on your hands you may want to consider helping out one of the HoI 1 modding groups.

Now Steel,
You know we love you, but you're lucky I'm feeling mellow today or I would post a list of "Pointless Thread" Links...
Shortly followed by a list if "Repeat Thread" links...
Followed by a list of "Threads with links to other Threads" links...

Most of the really good threads happened before the Beta - and there was lots of lively discussion. Now, we are mostly discussing pointless things :(
We used to do a page of new (good) topics every week.

I come on line and post - often now, an hour later I still have the 'last post' :(

As for helping modding - we want to help mod HoI2! That is where the action will be ;) :D

Don't panic!

I think we all log in from time to time to find out if there is anything new (usually not). Just look at the number of posts after each sreeny...

But I guess there's a main problem here: we are speaking about a game that doesn't exist yet, and after three weeks of reading/posting, you have already expresed your ideas about every single thing which has been proposed (IA, air missions, attachments, provinces, unit sizes, weather forecasts, fortifications, paratroopers, partisans...), so you don't feel like doing it again... at least I don't.

I agree with you in the "give us something" thing.

The forum is a bit deadish lately :( un-f******-fortunately

I think that this type of "more-info-things-to-do" thread is being one of the most popular topics/threads last couple of days. Looks like everybody's with you idealist (including me)!

I usually just scan the topic names to see if anything interesting new popped up and go to see the latest posts in "anything for non-betas to do" and that's it!

Although I joined the forum recently, I already feel bored with the eternal hypothetical debates on the same issues over and OVER AGAIN

I'm not saying that people shouldn't debate or post posts or make new threads, I'm just saying that regarding this is the forum about the non-released game, we simple need some information in order to get the lively environment back.

Otherwise, I'll just continue with regular checks of "betas to do?" thread...

Steel.

Vulture has got some free hands with the tech groups. (Even opened a new thread today about the issue. :) ). Now of course I do understand that the nature is quite different. After all the betas just tell us what they need, we get to see nothing, so no NDA violation.

However as screenies are, or so it was claimed when I asked about it, free to be distributed, I fail to see a reason why texts and pictures could not be proofreaded by the community.

I know what you and many others are thinking: "HOI2 is not done by community effort. Paradox entertainment is a company just as any other, they sell products and we buy them...."

But now I would like you to reconsider the whole situation. Think the whole effort (proofreading) not as work, but aiding. Think the effort the same as taking the trays to the pile at a fastfood restaurant, or cleaning up before the janitor comes.

Now here`s the deal, as far as I can see it: The community is anxious to see the texts and to share their ideas. And the whole point of the beta test is to fix mistakes and get some "out of the box" thoughts. (It is easy to become blind for ones own mistakes as anybody knows.)

And as everyone knows it is hard to make something up for nation that did not have much back then. What will the historic description of Nepal be? What about strategy?

Would you, honestly, not like to ask the question of: "What should the description of Nepal be in HOI2?" - Then people answering the question and a moderator pciking up the fruits of thought. If it is ownership issues that worries you so much, how about a big warning sign: "Typing out text here will remove all of your rights for the text..." Consult a lawyer to put that in a finer form, and you`re done... Or have I missed something crucial?

What is offered here is free work. Afterall that is what AGC-EEPs, COREs, VIPS and other mods are all about: work, work to make the game better, work to improve the gaming experience...

And what you, and more specifically HOI2, would gain is more accurate, better and overall MORE historic descriptions, strategies, event texts....

So... Give us a chance to contribute?
