Chapter Six
Lambert Labedz (Lambert Swan)
1105 - ... Duke of Cairo
Years 1103-1114
Conquest of Egypt
The first two years of Lambert's reign ware pretty uneventful.
The muslims ware destroyed in Egypt and the Knights ware conquering the remaining sultans in the Holy Land.
But in the year 1105 Lambert received terrible news, his youngest brother and heir Konrad died suddenly of an illness. The Duchy would now pass onto his older brother upon his death. As Lambert knew that it would destroy his newly created Crusader State he wed for the third time. He was already 34 years old and still with no sons of his own.
His eyes fell on an independent county north of Cairo.
Ermengaud de Lomagne, count of Pelusia had a brilliant young unmarried sister.
Ermengaud de Lomagne
Duchess Blanca
They married in June and in 1107 Blanca gave birth to a daughter.
The same year Ermengaud agreed to become a vassal of Lambert.
But it wasn't enough. In October Lambert lunched a campaign against the independent infant Count of Buhariya and he vassalised him.
Baudoin de la Marche, the infant Count
In these years Lambert became an indulgent and lustful ruler. He had many affairs with countless courtiers. But despite that his wife gave birth to a daughter every year. But Lambert wanted a son.
In 1110 Count of Gizah revolted from the King of England and asked Lambert for protection. The Norman count accepted Lambert as his liege and Lambert's realm expanded with another province.
Frery de Stafford, Norman Count
In the year 1111 on March 24th Blanca finally gave birth to a son.
He was named Casimir after his grandfather and the first Swan.
The following years ware of greatest importance for Lambert.
An opportunity arose when the Sheik of Quattara revolted. The army of the Duke of Cairo quickly conquered the Sheik. The same year brothers de Parthenay who controlled Alexandria and Gabiyaha revolted from King of France.
Lambert chose his moment wisely and attacked the brothers. After two years of siege Alexandira fell to Lambert who took the great city for himself.
The older brother Louis agreed to become a vassal of Lambert.
After eleven years Lambert conquered nearly every lord in Egypt. Either by war or diplomacy, none was stronger than him. And so after some negotiation and a sum of 500 gold Lambert crowned himself King of Egypt in his new capital Alexandria. He was 41 years old at the time of coronation.
