This We'll Defend: A Kaiserreich USA AAR

United_States_Department_of_the_Army_Seal.svg.png

Hey guys and gals: I've been around for a while, so I've decided to give back in the form of some entertainment.
Even though it's my first AAR, I think that I should be able to provide a pretty entertaining story.

Anyway, onto the action: In case the emblem and the title (my country's army's motto) didn't give it away, this is the story of MacArthur, his military government, and the crusade against the the red hordes of red France, perfidious Albion and their allies!

BTW: Pay no attention to MacArthur's adjutant: He's (judging by his name)a completely generic figure meant to advance the story.

January 1st, 1936

Mac_Arthur_1.png

Brigadier General John Smith's rank was already a source of pride for him. However, the position of Adjutant general was one of even greater prestige, assisting the Secretary of the Army directly. Rapping on the office door, Smith awaited the first task of his new position:

"Come in," came a somewhat fatigued voice

"General MacArthur," said Smith, clutching the documents at his side "Brig-"

"I know who you are, Smith," replied MacArthur "The situation is becoming serious: Let me see those documents you have there."

MacArthur seized the documents, flipping through them

"Well General, I don't need to remind you about the situation with Reed and the America First," said Smith

"Damn right," MacArthur replied irritably "Enough about those bastards. What about the foreign arena? Not sure how much good it will do, but I can deliver some recommendations to the Joint Board and Congress"

Mac_Arthur_2.png

"One of our options is to align with the Entente and the Canadians," began Smith "Having lost the British Isles to the reds, they're fiercely anti-Syndicalist and our cultural ties to them run deep but their relatively weak industrial base would lead them, in their inevitable conflict with the Union of Britain, to have us shoulder most of the burden."

"Better them than the reds," replied MacArthur "But I still don't think they're entirely trustworthy."

Mac_Arthur_3.png

"Now about the Internationale," continued Smith

"What about it," snarled MacArthur "You're not seriously saying that we even consider joining that collection of red scum, are you?"

"Well, part of our job is to make plans for any situation..."

"Do you want to be fired your first day? If not, than just drop it."

Mac_Arthur_4.png

"As far as major factions," resumed Smith "There only other real option is to join Mitteleuropa: This would be a smart strategic move as the Germans are THE superpower on the world stage today and even more anti-Syndicalist than the exiled British. However, lingering anti-German sentiment from the Weltkrieg and the authoritarian nature of the empire would led to discontent among some Americans."

"Hmmm...." answered MacArthur, as if conjuring some kind of grand plan

"And now for the wild cards," said Smith "The states that we could either find a new close ally in or end up fighting at some point down the line."

Mac_Arthur_5.png

"Of said wild cards," began Smith "The most powerful by far are the Japanese: Stable as far as the home front is concerned but our sources speak of some problems in their colonial possessions."

"What about their foreign policy," inquired MacArthur, recognizing full well that the Philippines would be a target for any southward Japanese expansion

"It's kind of ambiguous: They could go anywhere from the expected route of a southern expansion or something completely crazy like taking on the Germans or Russians. However, we've figured that if we leave them alone, they should leave us alone."

Mac_Arthur_6.png

"Of course the Russians are just emerging from a civil war that finished not even two decades ago," said Smith "However, we've been receiving word that Kerensky's government is becoming even less stable than usual. So it follows that pretty much anything could happen there in the coming years."

Mac_Arthur_7.png

"Spain is in a similar place to Russia," informed Smith "While we don't believe that Germany would let Spain fall to the reds or the Carlists, it's impossible to predict either way, especially with so much of their focus directed at the French."

Mac_Arthur_8.png

"And finally, Mongolia," said Smith, sounding fatigued to to the long hours and explanation

"What about it?" inquired MacArthur sarcastically "It's completely irrelevant."

"Well, I wouldn't be so sure about that."

May 1936

Flushed and exhausted, Brigadier General John Smith flung open the door to his superior's office to deliver the bad news:

"Sir!" began a winded Smith, placing a folder on MacArthur's desk "Our sources in Europe at the International have something urgent!"

"Calm down," ordered MacArthur, picking up the folder "It's probably the same old red malarkey they've been on about for years."

Mac_Arthur_9.png

"Of course!" raged MacArthur "It all makes sense now! Remember those freighters flying the Norwegian flag intercepted at Baltimore and Philadelphia last week?"

"Yes, sir," replied Smith "Filled to the brim with weapons, explosives, and other essentials for war."

"I WANT to take this as an act of war: But Reed and his boys have too much legitimacy . Besides, Congress would never act on this. Any more bad news?"

"Well..."

Mac_Arthur_10.png

"Sir, do you remember the revolution that toppled the Bolivian government the other week?" continued Smith "Yeah, the reds ended up in power."

"Not as troubling as Mexico and Centroamerica going Syndie, but still disconcerting," said MacArthur "If the left-wing gains absolute power in the next Brazilian election, we could be looking at a red-dominated South America."

"Speaking of central America, sir..."

Mac_Arthur_11.png

MacArthur sighed irritably: If the rest of Latin America fell to the Syndicalists, they would no doubt become staunch allies, if not outright puppets of the Internationale. This, combined with the fact that many IWW-affiliated unions were already engaging in street battles with (now with British and French arms) the America First, local and federal law enforcement, it seemed clear who the next major target for the "world revolution" would be.

"It's time we put the plan into action," said MacArthur fiercely

"Sir!" answered a scandalized Smith "You don't mean-"

"Yes, I do. Ask yourself, Smith: What's the alternative?"

Late August-September 1936

"Wow," said an astonished Smith "I can't believe Congress actually agreed to it. I mean, I knew the situation with the IWW and America First was bad but..."

Mac_Arthur_13.png

"Neither can I," replied MacArthur, somewhat less astonished "But we don't have time to sit here and gawk, Smith: We've got a job to do. Mobilize the National Guard and send them to Chicago, Detroit, and other IWW hubs: We're ending this by Christmas."

"Yes sir! But what about Long? I don't think he's entirely trustworthy."

"Maybe not, but he and his buddies hate the reds just as much as we do. Who knows? We might be able to keep them on a much shorter leash than he otherwise would be.What about the South America situation. Is it still deteriorating?"

"Define 'deteriorating', sir."

Mac_Arthur_12.png

"Around a month ago," began Smith "We received word that the Integralists secured the election. After a few weeks of red-led civil unrest and demands for a recount, the results they returned were found to be legitimate."

"I'm not sure whether this hurts or helps us in the long run," replied MacArthur "Either way, we've got to get our own house in order for the time being."

I do hope that Dougie Mack will cede power after '44, also, why is Hughes of all people head of the FBI? Ought to be J. Edgar.

Late November 1936

General Douglas MacArthur reviewed his documents and intelligence reports nervously, awaiting further word from the Midwest. The crackdown against the Combined Syndicates of America had begun in earnest since his taking power. In concert with the Emergency Security Act and anti-socialist legislation recent passed by his government, MacArthur was cautiously optimistic that the situation with the CSA could be defused with minimal chaos. In response to the support the CSA drew from the industrial centers of the Midwest and Mid Atlantic states, MacArthur had even gone so far as to collaborate with Long's America First party and their "Minutemen" paramilitary force to help with the suppression. However, the cautiously optimistic attitude was to be shattered by a breaking news broadcast out of Chicago:

"We interrupt this regularly scheduled report for a breaking news bulletin," came the voice of the radio newsman "In Chicago, IWW chairman Jack Reed has declared the independence of the Combined Syndicates of America, promising that any 'capitalist aggression shall be met with overwhelming retaliation'.

The broadcast then turned to a recording of Reed's speech

"For too long, this country has based its prosperity on the exploitation of the working classes," the machine quoted Reed "This unjust system cannot stand. Therefore, to the end of its abolition, I proudly declare the independence of the Combined Syndicates of America, the worker's paradise envisioned by Marx and Engels. We all desire peace, but the workers will defend themselves: Any capitalist soldier or law enforcement who infringes on our borders and sovereignty is to be shot on sight without exception.

"Headed by the Commune of France, the Internationale has extended its congratulations and recognition of the new state," continued the announcer "With Syndicalist and other revolutionary luminaries throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas following suit."

"Damn," muttered MacArthur "There's no way that this will stay contained to the Midwest."

"So I assume you heard all that, sir?' inquired Smith dejectedly

"Just sit down and give me the documents, Smith."

Mac_Arthur_15.png

"As of the 22nd," began Smith "The red areas are the de facto borders of the CSA or its areas of influence."

"I see..." replied MacArthur "It's like a forest fire: We've got to stamp it out early before it gets any worse."

"Speaking of getting worse, sir..."

"What is it, Smith?"

"You know how Long and his Minutemen have been out of contact for the past few weeks...Yeah, they've broken off too. They were more low-key about it, but the fact remains that they're firing on our units in their area of influence"

Mac_Arthur_16.png

MacArthur groaned irritably:

"On the bright side," said MacArthur "That isn't THAT big an area."

"Sorry about that sir, that map is slightly outdated. It's more like this..."

Mac_Arthur_18.png

"Dammit Smith!" shouted MacArthur "What else is going wrong?!

"Well, apart from the western states seceding, calling themselves the Pacific States of America..."

Mac_Arthur_17.png

"The Philippines going red," continued Smith

Mac_Arthur_19.png

"And red Mexico attempting to compromise our territorial integrity is pretty much it for now."

MacArthur exhaled angrily, attempting to formulate some semblance of a strategy for winning this war

"Not even a century has passed and we're looking at another civil war," he remarked "But we don't have a choice: Relay the order to the commanders in the Midwest that we still control. We're going after the CSA first. In this condition, they'll eventually outproduce and overwhelm us."

"What about the Union State, sir?" inquired Smith

"We'll have to set up a defensive perimeter around their borders: They don't have anywhere near the production capacity or international support that the reds have."

Whelp, looks like you'll have to thrash the Syndies, the Unionists, the Pacificans, the Mexicans, the Hawa'iians, the Filipinos, the Canadians and the Japanese to get back to pre-war borders. Too easy.

February 1937

The frigid, winter air of the Midwest still wearing away at him even from his field office, General Douglas MacArthur looked triumphantly at the map of the CSA-held areas:The "CSA first"' strategy appeared to be paying off: In since November, the major industrial hub of Chicago (and CSA capital) had already fallen, with the interim capital of Detroit to follow within hours. Even in its crippled state, some union militias and reds from halfway around the world were still no match for the might of the US Armed Forces.

Mac_Arthur_20.png

"As you can see sir," began Smith "We have completely succeeded in driving the CSA into northeast Wisconsin and Michigan, with only a few bastions of resistance remaining outside of those two states."

"Excellent," replied MacArthur, reaching for the ringing phone "Hmmm...Really?"

"What is it, sir?"

"I just got word from Griswold: Reed and his thugs have flown the coop! The interim government of the CSA has ordered a complete, unconditional surrender to the federal government!"

Mac_Arthur_21.png

"Now, I've no doubt that you and the other officers want to break out the champagne," said MacArthur half-seriously "Seeing that the reds are done for, but this war isn't over yet: What's the situation with Long look like?"

Mac_Arthur_22.png

"Exactly as you commanded, sir," informed Smith "We've set up a perimeter around their de facto borders, with some incursions here and there. Nothing significant."

"Perfect," replied MacArthur "Get a plane ready: I want to be a part of this."

So, are we going after Canada, Mexico or the Pacific Islands once the AUS and Pacificans get put to bed?

March-April 1937

A truly terrified-looking Smith dashed into General MacArthur's field office, just outside of Atlanta, intelligence-related documents nearly slipping from his folders:

"Sir, sir!" he said breathlessly "Before we lost contact, our sources in Moscow have bad news!"

"The AUS is almost done for," said MacArthur tiredly "Can't it wait until tomorrow?"

"No, sir! It cant!"

"Holy..."

Mac_Arthur_24.png

"It gets worse," replied Smith

Mac_Arthur_25.png

"I take it the 'Oppressed of Eurasia' includes Alaska and the Pacific Northwest," asked MacArthur, rage simmering in his voice

"We don't know: After we got these documents back, all contact from our agents in Russia spontaneously ceased! We can only assume the worst..."

"Dammit! They're like a rabid dog: Someone's going to have to eventually put them down. But we've got no choice but to worry about them later. The siege of Atlanta is proceeding just as well, even better than planned."

April-May1937

Much like every American, Brigadier General John Smith was both relieved and overjoyed to see the end (although he was not one for the wild celebrations which broke out after the surrender of the Union State) of the Second American Civil War. However, both on the home front and in foreign policy, there existed still much work to be done: The growing power of the Internationale, the rise of Soviet Russia, and the increasing hostility of the Entente all weighed heavily on the minds of the American General Staff, as its leader (and Head of State) knew all too well:

"I thought you'd be out celebrating with your men," said MacArthur, apparently busy with several letters

"I'd like to sir," replied Smith, somewhat dejectedly "But duty still calls."

"Indeed: Send out the order to the interim governors: Yes on the censorship, crackdown against the reds, no on the confiscations of fortunes: I'm getting the idea that some in our ranks are getting too into this 'military junta' thing. And the foreign front?"

Mac_Arthur_27.png

"As you already know, sir," began Smith "Spain has become in recent years, increasingly unstable. Our sources tell us of red and Carlist forces engaging in street battles with both each other and the government."

Mac_Arthur_28.png

"In addition," continued Smith "Canada agreed to hand back Alaska to us. They claim it was purely an act of good will, but we're fairly certain that it has something to do with our military buildup on their border."

"As long as it works," said MacArthur "I don't really care."

"By the way, sir: We've got some bad, but not entirely surprising news out of Central America and Spain"

Mac_Arthur_29.png

Mac_Arthur_30.png

"So the very real threat of a war in Central America and open civil war in Spain," replied MacArthur irritably "Both of them allowing the reds a potential for even more influence...Unfortunately, we can't worry about them right now. We've got our hands full keeping order and preparing for Operation Gold Rush."

Looks like a nasty rebellion there in Morocco...

Anyway, let's deal with CentroAmerica like we dealt with Jacobo Arbenz!

November-December 1937

Uniform newly cleaned and pressed, Brigadier General John Smith entered the Oval Office, pleased to report on the progress against the rouge western states:

"Sir," he said "The troops in Nevada, New Mexico, and Montana are in position and our commanders are awaiting your orders.

Mac_Arthur_31.png

"Excellent." replied MacArthur, seeming less stressed than he had in months "Get word to the commanders in the field: Operation Gold Rush is a go. We hold the lines in Nevada and New Mexico and take any targets of opportunity. And thrust into the poorly-defended north
