I just installed Kaiserreich; I hadn't played HoI 2 in years, but this is a hell of a lot of fun. I decided to play my first game as the British Union because they seemed to be in a pretty safe position. I naturally liberated the Irish workers from the dictator Collins... and now the IRA won't stop bombing me. 
I just want to bring them socialism!
It really feels like a plausible alternate history -- probably because it's such a political trainwreck -- and things have developed entirely differently in every hands-off game I've run. So I know it's a little late, but I want to thank everyone who worked on Kaiserreich for making a kickass mod.
