This happen to me last night. So I'm playing as The Palatinate, things are going well I've conquered the proviences of Baden, Elsas and Ansbach. I'm Allied to Austria with 150+ relation. They then procided to call me into a war vs Bravaria(My Rival) with a promise of territorial gains, "Great!" I thought "Free land and a bunch of favours with Austria if I help out a lot" so we won the war and I had about 40% participation so I got the provience of Inglestat(sorry if I misspelled that), 140ish ducats and 27(I think) favours with Austria. I was then like "Great! I can use those to call Austria into some wars soon"(I was thinking about attacking Denmark and claiming there throne since we have the same dynasty and they're heirless + will accept a Royal Marriage if I improve relations a bit. I also want to attack Ulm because they have no allies but there a free city so I need Austria to be in a war with me.) But the very next month they broke the Alliance and wen't Hostile because "-17 they desire Inglestat" I didn't even get the warning that the Alliance was about to break! And as a massive screw you from Austria they procided to unlawful territory the provience THEY gave me! So now I'm in a tough spot I still have Bohemia and Saxony as Allies but Austria can easily beat that if they decide that when our truce is up to attack me as they have Hungary, England and a couple of Electors as Allies. Well time to start buttering up France!

Edit: I don't think we share any proviences of vital interest(I will have to check) But last I checked they were only interested in the lands between their province beside Burgundy and their main holdings.

That is weird. Even if you both had set the same provinces as vital interest, the ai will never give those over in peace deals. Seems like a very strange situation

Could be that Austria didn't want it, but after the war they re-considered their territorial desires and decided to flag it.

I though the AI will never set their Allies proviences as vital interest tho, it even refrains from adding the same proviences that the player has set as vital interest.

This happens...

This doesn't happen
I've seen it happen before when I ally someone who has like 2 proviences set as vital interest that I have also set and they remove them as vital iterest. Also I rarely see an AI set my proviences as vital interest unless they need to link up their lands or have a core on my lands

Is this because the Unlawful Territory modifier conflicts with the whole new favour & trust system?

If so, that would sort of be an oversight on behalf of the Dev's.
I wouldn't think so as I previously conquered 3 HRE provinces without them breaking their alliance with me to make the demand.

Do you happen to have any saves from (ideally) just before the peace deal was signed?

Unfortunitly no, It's an Ironman save. I didn't expect this to happen so I didn't make a backup.

the game should automatically make a back up save a few months back from the original save. or do you mean you played on after this and its too late now. I would recommend keeping the backup as well, as the other day after a few hours of playing i logged off. got on the next day and saw my save was gone. luckily there was a back up.

I did play for a few months afterwards but if what you say is correct it is possible the backup could be back far enough but I can't check at the moment as I'm not at home.

They went hostile due to a -17?! I can hardly believe that this was the reason. I guess the alliance break was due to unlawful territory. The emperor gets like -50 on alliances for each unlawfull territory he could still ask to return. Nevertheless, it is of course weird, that he does this due to territory he gave you.

As stated previously I don't think It was the Unlawful Territory that did it because I had previously conquerd 3 HRE provinces without issue.

Unless it's changed recently, you don't get unlawful territory when you're allied to the emperor. So, the alliance had to break before the unlawful territory modifier could happen.

I belive he was refering to the fact that nations in the HRE still get the opinion modifer until the provience is cored, you just don't get the provience modifer if the Emeror doesn't demand it from you. I think that's how it works anyway.

Ever tried making an alliance with the emperor the instance after you conquered something in the empire and before he asks you to return it? Well, it doesn't work due to this modifier. I once even had a OPM emperor cancel an alliance with my mighty PLC, just because the modifier was high due to many possible unlawful territories. The moment they were cored (and already declared unlawful since the alliance ended :( ), I could renew the alliance easily...

Ah, good old Austrian duplicity. I can never quite tell if AI Austria's narcissistic behaviour is faulty coding, or if it's supposed to be that way to simulate how the real-life Habsburgs manipulated the HRE to serve their own narrow interests.

Don't put yourself into position to border your more powerful allies. It has been true in EU 4 since day 1 (although the degree of wreckage it does has varied some) and remains so. As soon as you share a border with a bigger blob, especially a militaristic one, your land becomes "their land". At least with the current rules if you can get trust up high enough before you collide you have a chance to avoid it (although you'll still see the ai do stuff like peace out early and drop your trust below the limit).
