This is the Way - A Mandalorian AAR

1605475507656.png

Hello and welcome to my second attempt at a Stellaris AAR, This is the Way - A Mandalorian AAR. I will be using the Star Wars: Fallen Republic Mod for Stellaris and I will be playing as the Mandalorian Clans. The style of AAR will be history book.

I thought I wouldn't be doing another AAR so soon, but circumstances have had a diffrent idea. A month ago my computer broke and I lost all my data. Luckily nothing too important was lost, but all my saves, screenshots, and scripts for my AARs A History of the Iron Throne - A AGOT History Book AAR, Vanguards of the Revolution - A Revolutionary France AAR , and The Ordeals of the Orsini were lost. Understandably I lost all my motivation for writing for a bit, but a combination of playing Stellaris again, self isolating at home, and watching the Mandalorian sparked my passion for writing again. This time i've made sure to put everything in my google drive, so hopefully a big data loss shouldn't happen again. Hope you all enjoy!

The New Mandalorian capital of Sundari

An Excerpt from Mandalore: A History by Friso Kardeen written 7 BNO (Before the New Order)* The chapter is titled “Rising from the Ashes: The New Mandalorians”

“To say Mandalore is still divided is true, but it does not get to the heart of what ails the scarred planet that, even nearly a hundred years later, struggles to forget the horrors of the Mandalorian Civil War. Indeed, it is hard to do so, with so much of the planet’s surface filled with craters and the ruins of once-proud cities. It is sometimes difficult for a stranger to the planet to see all that when they arrive, for the current regime’s capital, Sundari, seems tailor-made to shield both outsiders and locals away from such sights. No amount of durasteel can hold back memories though, as the ‘New Mandalorians’ are beginning to find out. Swept into power in the aftermath of the Civil War, the New Mandalorians promised to the survivors of the war that Mandalore would never return to the ways that had only delivered them misery and death, and instead would only dedicate itself to pacifism and peace. The people of Mandalore at the time accepted this new reality, mainly because they too had grown tired of constant war. The remnants of what are now called the ‘Old Mandalorians’ were not powerful enough to unseat the new regime, due to the power of the New Mandalorians’ benefactors, the Galactic Republic. Defeated, the Mandalorians who followed the old ways slunk to the outermost planets of what was once considered Mandalorian Space but had since become a lawless den of piracy since the collapse of the Mandalorian Empire. Some decided to settle on planets such as Concord Dawn, whilst others entered the bounty hunting profession, where many former Mandalorian warriors became made their name.

1605475860280.png

Concord Dawn, the planet which many of the Old Mandalorians fled to.

On Mandalore, something unprecedented was about to take place. A culture, that had dedicated itself to war and conquest for thousands of years, would transform its identity into one that would value art, literature and above all, peace. More astonishingly still was that it only took a matter of years for it to happen, something that surprised contemporary observers as much as it does us now, nearly a hundred years later. The model for the New Mandalorian regime would be the relatively young state of Naboo, which had been colonised roughly a thousand years before the Mandalorian Civil War. Naboo was, and still is, famed for its art and culture, as well as its pursuit of the ideal of peace within itself and the wider galaxy. This harmony was what inspired the New Mandalorians to borrow many of their traditions and meld them with their own. Mandalore would no longer be protected by an army of warriors, but by the security forces, much like Naboo’s security forces. Instead of warrior schools and fighting pits, Mandalore would establish academies to train diplomats and scholars. Even the head of state would be modelled on the Naboo, with a Duke to rule over the planet as a constitutional monarch, while a Prime Minister was to be voted in by the people. However, unlike Naboo’s system, which elected Kings and Queens, the title of Duke of Mandalore would be hereditary, a decision made to keep any would-be candidates representing the old ways from getting the throne. The ruling dynasty would be the only Mandalorian clan to side with the New Mandalorian movement, Clan Kryze. Once one of many warring Mandalorian clans, Clan Kryze joined the pacifist Mandalorians when the clans began using nuclear weapons on Mandalore. Ironically, their military might, aided by the Republic and the Jedi, would end up ending the war. That would not stop them from outlawing armies shortly afterwards…

…and now we reach current events which we find ourselves surrounded by. To the galactic community at large, Mandalore is not often thought of. To some, it is still a war-torn ruin, whilst to others, it is an interesting backwater that has turned a new leaf. To the majority though, Mandalore means war, Neo-Crusaders, the warrior code, and bloody conquest of countless star systems. No matter how much the New Mandalorians and their current leader, Duchess Satine Kryze, try to reinvent themselves as a centre of pacifism in the Republic, the spectre of the thousands of wars the Mandalorians wrought on the Galaxy still lives on the minds of many in the Republic. Indeed, even in Mandalorian Space, there are signs the old ways may not be as dead as first thought. Recent attacks by a group called the ‘Death Watch’ has raised concerns that an insurgency by Mandalorian Warriors may occur on Mandalore, one which may throw the system into civil war once again."

Chapter 1: The Restoration

New Mandalorian art depicting the ancient Mandalorian Wars

The end of the Clone Wars would also mean the end of the war on Mandalore and the restoration of the old ways. The New Mandalorians, which had ruled the planet for a century, had been ousted by the Death Watch under the command of Pre Vizsla under the pretence of a popular revolution. Vizsla, a Mandalorian politician and ardent supporter of the old ways of Mandalore, had led an insurgency against Duchess Satine Kryze for decades, at first funded by himself, and then by the Separatists, who saw him as a potential ally. However, multiple defeats at the hands of the New Mandalorians and the Jedi led the Separatists to abandon Vizsla’s cause, leaving him on his own once again. Not one to be deterred by defeat, Viszla sided with two former Sith warriors, Maul and Savage Opress. Together they subdued the many criminal organizations across the galaxy, including the powerful Hutt Clans and the Black Sun. This new ‘Shadow Collective’ would become the main criminal syndicate for the next twenty years. With their newfound power and wealth, Death Watch and the Shadow Collective began to move against Mandalore itself.

By 1BNO, the once strong New Mandalorian administration was beginning to falter. Like many systems, the ravages of the Clone Wars had begun to affect the nominally neutral planet as food and medical supplies began to be placed under significant strain. Add on to this the rampant corruption within the government spread by the likes of Prime Minister Almec , the increase in crime within Sundari City, and repeated Death Watch attacks and eventually people began to turn against Duchess Satine. The spark that would lead to the New Mandalorians’ end would be when the Shadow Collective launched a campaign of terror against the local Mandalorians. The security forces, unable to hold back the tide of violence, began to buckle under the strain. Just as it looked like anarchy would take over the streets, an unlikely saviour would arrive. Death Watch began fight back against the criminals, defeating them in every engagement, and protecting the innocents of Sundari. Soon many saw them and their leader, Pre Vizsla, as heroes willing to lay down their lives for the people, while the Duchess and her ministers looked like little more than ineffectual and weak. The pacifist rhetoric that had once been the main pillar of New Mandalorian society was treated with disdain by the public, who only saw that such tactics had only led to chaos and death. The stage was set for a regime change.

Demonstrations outside the royal palace would be the first sign that a revolution was about to take place. The demonstrators had three demands: end the exile of the Death Watch, bring an end to state corruption, and establish Pre Viszla as Prime Minister of Mandalore. The Duchess, who had once been loved by her people, had little choice but to accept their demands, for she foresaw no other way that would not lead to bloodshed. Predictably Pre Viszla quickly deposed Duchess Satine and named himself the new Mand’alor, the traditional leader of the Mandalorian Warrior Clans. Viszla moved quickly to establish his control over the planet, his first move was to eliminate his rivals, of which Maul and his Shadow Collective had become. He imprisoned Maul and Opress and killed all Collective members on the planet, thus tightening his grip on Mandalore and restoring honour to Mandalorian society. His rule as Mand’alor would not last long, for Maul and Opress quickly escaped their imprisonment and tracked down Viszla in the Sundari Throne Room. In the palace, in front of all of the Death Watch leadership, Maul challenged Viszla’s right to rule Mandalore and it’s people. Naturally, a trail by combat took place, with Viszla wielding the legendary Darksaber against the former Sith Lord. The duel was hard fought, with Viszla putting up a brave fight against Maul, however there was only one way it could have gone. Maul was one of the greatest combatants of his age, and soon he overpowered Viszla until he was on his knees. In accordance with the Mandalorian code, the defeated does not survive. Viszla was beheaded with the Darksaber, a final indignity to a man who had fought all his life to restore the old ways.

Almost immediately Mandalorian society, which had only just been unified, was splintered yet again. This time the split was within the Death Watch, half of which submitted to Maul as the new leader of Mandalore, a right which they said he won through combat. The other side, lead by Pre Viszla’s leutennant and sister to the former Duchess, Bo-Katan Kryze, proclaimed that Maul could not lead Mandalore as he was not Mandalorian and did not follow the Mandalorian Code. The split would lead to yet another Mandalorian Civil War, which would force Bo-Katan and her followers off Mandalore. During this Maul would kill Duchess Satine, ending the New Mandalorian dream forever.

After several defeats Bo-Katan turned to the only potential allies she had left, the Republic. Having fought against the Jedi and the Republic early in the Clone Wars, they did not fully trust Katan or her intentions when it came to ruling Mandalore. Many wanted a return to the passive New Mandalorian regime, but they were swayed by the fact that the moderately friendly Mandalorian government had been overthrown by one that was actively hostile to the Republic. In Bo-Katan they had a possibility of placing a potential ally in the throne of Mandalore, one that could also be controlled. An army under the command of former Jedi Ahsoka Tano and Commander Rex of the 501st Battalion was sent to aid an invasion led by Bo-Katan. Maul and his Mandalorian collaborators were quickly overpowered by the combined military might of the Republic and Katan’s Death Watch, with Maul being captured after a lengthy duel with Tano. Katan was quickly sworn in as Regent of Mandalore as Mauls agents were removed from positions of power.

Barely a day after the Siege of Mandalore, the Jedi Purge began. The venerable Jedi Order that had stood as the protectors of peace and justice for thousands of years was destroyed in matter of hours. Across the galaxy the Jedi were gunned down by the very Clones they had led into battle. Many only had seconds to comprehend what has happening before they were killed. The official story was that the Jedi had attempted a coup, and that the Supreme Chancellor himself was gravely injured during an assassination attempt. A few days later, with backing of just over half of the senate, Chancellor Sheev Palpatine proclaimed himself Emperor of a new Galactic Empire.

1605476979854.png

The Great Jedi Purge would change the galaxy forever

For Mandalore little changed, for the now Imperial presence was still needed to ensure that a smooth transition of power took place. The new Imperial officers were far more severe than their Republic predecessors, but they largely seemed to respect Bo-Katan’s leadership. Things would change yet again when the Empire descended into the civil war in 1ANO. Across the Galaxy Imperial fleets and armies were pulled out of the Outer and Mid Rims, leaving sectors to fend for themselves. Mandalore was once such system. Quickly Bo-Katan proclaimed herself the new Mand’alor, which was a direct contravention of the treaty signed with Empire which said the title was banned. She then laid claim the traditional borders of the old Mandalorian Empire. Many of the worlds within the borders had significant Mandalorian populations and so they swore fealty to the new Mand’alor. For the first time in over a hundred years, Mandalore was united under a Mand’alor. The old ways had now fully returned.

Well, I doubt Palpatine will like that.

Subbed.

Also, why don't you use either the Great Resynchronization or Ruusan Reformation calendars (they're from Legends)?

Thanks for the sub!

Yeah I could use one of those dating systems to be fair.

Mandalorians never seem to get the hang of peace for very long.

Chapter 2: A New Galactic Paradigm

1609191209613.png

Bo-Katan Kryze, the new Mand'alor

It became clear very soon after Bo-Katan’s rise to the throne of Mandalore that her rule would be markedly different to her predecessors. After her proclamation as Mand’alor by the clans in Sundari Square, in which she received her official name, Mand’alor the Restorer and the Darksaber, Katan announced that all those who served under the New Mandalorians and Maul’s Shadow Collective were pardoned, except for members of the upper leadership. The decision was not a show of mercy to placate the masses, it was a necessity if Mandalore wished to field an army large enough to protect its new empire. However, before they could be accepted back into the fold, each pardoned individual had to pledge eternal allegiance to Bo-Katan and Mandalore, the punishment for breaking such an oath was death, a fate which some Mandalorians would still face. The five main collaborators of Maul’s regime were tried under the Mandalorian Code and were found guilty of collaborating with outside influences that threatened to destroy the Mandalorian way of life and enslave its people. All five were executed the following day by ritual beheading.

With her rule established, Katan revealed a set of sweeping reforms to Mandalore’s governmental and administrative institutions. Instead of returning Mandalore to the old ways, Katan wished to make a Mandalore that would both respect the warrior traditions of the past and build a strong nation that would stand the test of time. In her years of exile, she had realised that the reason the Mandalorians had fallen so low was that after a Mand’alor would die, decades of war to find the next one would take place, weakening them and making them susceptible to outside threats. To rectify this, she established the post of Archon of Mandalore, whose job would be to run the day-to-day governance of the realm and to ensure the smooth passage of power between Mand’alors. Some saw this as the return of the Prime Minister position that had been used during the time of the New Mandalorians, but Katan made an express effort to distance the Archon position from such democratic notions. Archons would be appointed directly by the Mand’alor and could be dismissed as well. They also could only lead Mandalorian armies during the period when a new Mand’alor is to be chosen. The first Archon of Mandalore would be Esok Chorn, a member of Death Watch and supporter of Bo-Katan since Pre Vizsla’s death. Bo-Katan also banned raiding within Mandalorian territory, re-established many New Mandalorian public services, and founded the Mandalorian Warrior Academy. The official name of Bo-Katan’s government was also chosen to be The United Clans of Mandalore, though many just referred to it as the Mandalorian Clans.

The Mandalorian Military

In the early days of the Mandalorian Restoration, the Mandalorian Military was mainly made up of members of Death Watch, returned Mandalorian Warriors who had been bounty hunters and mercenaries, and former members of Maul’s Death Watch. This made it effectively a militia, though a potent and deadly one at that. Despite it being closer to Mandalore’s warrior past, Bo-Katan and the leadership around her were concerned by its capability in both fighting established armies and policing Mandalorian territory. Worse were the divisions between clans, groups, and origins, which threatened to pull apart the Mandalorians before they had even begun to establish themselves. It would be under the guidance of a visionary Mandalorian Warrior named Ghes Saxon that the solution would eventually be found.

Born on the planet of Zanbar in the edges of Mandalorian Space, Ghes was part of the second generation of exiles that had grown up away from Mandalore. Her mother, the leader of Clan Saxon and a senior member of the Death Watch, had trained her to realise that brute force and strength of arms was neither the bravest nor best approach to a battle. Having spent time at Brentaal Naval Academy, Ghes returned to Mandalorian Space with the expertise and training in military tactics and strategy, something that most in the Death Watch lacked. Following the death of Tor Vizsla the Younger, Ghes Saxon found herself at odds with the Death Watch’s new leader, Pre Vizsla whom she found arrogant and ignorant. Eventually, it became too much for the Saxon Matriarch and she left, leaving Clan Saxon under the command of her younger brother, Gar. For nearly twenty years she roamed as a bounty hunter until the news of Maul’s coup reached her ears. Enraged that an outside now ruled Mandalore, she sought out Bo-Katan and joined her resistance movement, with her eventually taking part in the Siege of Mandalore herself. It was only through her loyalty that she managed to save her two brothers, who had sided with Maul, from execution.

As a member of Bo-Katan’s new council, she found herself in charge of organizing the disparate Mandalorian forces into own cohesive fighting force. Immediately there was one option on the table, to turn them into one unified army like the Empire, a solution proposed by a few members of the council. Ghes rejected that outright, noting that Mandalorians strength was in their sense of identity, purpose, and history. The plan that Ghes put forward would still be radical, for she set out all Mandalorian forces be brought under what she called the Mandalorian Warband System. Each Warband would be made up of around 20,000 soldiers and would be led by one general, who would be directly appointed by the Mand’alor themselves. Directly subordinate to the General would be ten retainers and below them fifty Knights. The reason for this change was to both remove the emphasis on group and clan loyalty, and instead transform it to loyalty to Mandalore itself. Following the acceptance of this model, the groups like the Death Watch ceased to exist as fighting forces and instead were reformed into Warrior Lodges, clubs that warriors could join to show their cultural allegiances without fracturing the unity of the Mandalorian Armed forces.

281990_screenshots_20201115120426_1 (3).jpg

The Mandalorian Navy would go not so much be reformed as be founded, for an established Mandalorian Navy had not existed since the days of the Mandalorian Wars, nearly four-thousand years earlier. The Navy would be built from the ground up by former mercenaries Tal Ordo and Fenn Rau, both of whom had been employed by the Republic to train and lead Republic fighter squadrons during the Clone Wars. The type of Navy they built up would be like most navies of the period, with the exception, at least in Mandalorian terms, that non-Mandalorians could serve and even lead in it. This was mainly due to the lack of a naval tradition within Mandalorian culture, which meant they would have to rely on outside expertise to build up their Naval institutions. Many former New Mandalorians would join the Navy due to their academic training.

1609191612523.png

Fenn Rau, a former foundling of the True Mandalorians, he survived the Battle of Galidraan and became a wandering mercenary. It would during the Clone Wars that the Republic would hire him and his partner, Tal Ordo, to train eite Clone Pilots. Upon hearing of the Restoration of Mandalore, they returned to their long lost home.

The Galactic Civil War

1609191765250.png

The peace that was supposed to arrive at end of the Clone Wars lasted only a fleeting few months. Though most of the Separatist’s armies had shut down, several holdout worlds in the southern quadrants of the Outer Rim continued to resist the newly established Galactic Empire, causing chaos across the southern trade routes of the galaxy. To make matters worse, the new Imperial Senate was hardly unified behind their recently proclaimed Emperor, whom some in the radical factions of the Senate called a tyrant. These ‘Republicans’ as they called themselves, had secretly planned the downfall of Palpatine before the end of Clone Wars due to their fears of a potential extension to his term in office, fears that quickly became realised. The most prominent among them, Senator of Mon Mothma of Chandrila, openly challenged the Emperor’s right to rule, and proclaimed his New Order a “tyranny designed to enforce Palpatine’s will across the galaxy”.

1609192009226.png

While most of the officers in the Imperial Armed Forces supported the Emperor, the local sector forces of many worlds were outwardly hostile to the idea of Empire taking over direct control of their security needs, citing that it was a contravention of a slew of Republic era self-determination laws. The response from Coruscant was always the same, that all Republic laws and treaties were null and void, and that it was the laws enshrined in the New Order that citizens of the Empire must follow. Within the New Order were several laws that alarmed many non-human worlds, specifically the right of the Empire to make ‘undesirable species’ indentured servants of the Empire, which even the most fleeting reader could tell meant slavery. It did not take long for the galaxy to see it in action, with the worlds of New Plympto, Kashyyyk, and Honoghr being brutally occupied and their denizens enslaved by the Empire. When Senator Mon Mothma spoke out about it on the Holonet, she was nearly imprisoned by the Empire, only escaping with the help of Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan. This would be the spark that would lead to war, for Republicans finally rose up, declaring a new Republic. From their base of Dantooine, the Republicans named Mon Mothma the acting Chancellor and rallied the northern Republican worlds to their cause. These included Ithor, Chandrila, Alderaan, Brentaal, Arkania, and Ord Mantell.

This new threat was yet another in a series of threats that threatened to tear the overstretched Empire apart before it had even properly begun. To retain his control over the Core and Expansion Regions, the Emperor ordered all Imperial Forces to be withdrawn to the Galactic Centre to deal with the Republican uprising, leaving many former Republic worlds in the outer sections of the Galaxy undefended and alone. Instead of falling into anarchy though, these systems quickly coalesced into a dozen groups across the galaxy, and within a week of the Imperial withdrawal, a slew of new states had sprung up from the Colonies to the Outer Rim. While unrecognised by Coruscant, these nations had de facto control of their territories, many of which used their sector fleets and security forces to maintain control. Even in areas that were supportive of the Emperor new autonomous authorities sprung up, from the Corellian Security Zone to the Eriadu Authority. Some Galactic Historians from the Core would come to call this the great collapse, whilst those in the Outer Rim would name it the Mass Liberation, either way, it seemed that the Galactic Civil War would be thought central areas of the Galaxy, a welcome thought to the recently ravaged systems of the Outer and Mid Rims.

Sadly they don't, especially when a galaxy decides to explode into yet more war.

have you thought of doing a star trek new horizons aar as well?

Perhaps in the future, though I must admit I'm not an expert on Star Trek.

Finally an AAR for the Fallen republic mod. Now if only someone would do the CIS remnants.

Thanks, hopefully I can upload a bit more regularly now :D

Well, war will be good for the Mandalorians.
