When I installed the patch for the new DLC, it seem sot have erased all of my minor modifications, including making pagans playable. Well, I was doing an experimental game where I played as England, Sweden and Poland, and hired mercs that I could not afford, allowing them to call for an invasion of my Kingdom. (I managed to surrender with some land left, each time, so I was able to survive), and hop on to the next. When I was done, I noticed something. Clicking on the Merc Republic Territory, the play button was lit though it said I "could not play as theocracies".

Curious.

I then proceeded to play a quaint little game as the Captain of the Company of the Hat.

Until he died, sadly. Though apparently, fabricating claims still works, so I was able to take over Wales before he died and it was game over. Still, it was awesome.

Was it possible to chance the succesion laws?
Or since you seem to hold most of england, usurp the Kingdom of England title and see what happens then?

I quite honestly don't get the fascination with republic/theocracy DLC. Since the whole game is based of Dynasties and since those don't get passed down in either i'd got to say the very attempt to play one would be a single generation game. I honestly don't think how they could oblige this without a complete rewrite of the premise of the game. Which is that you're playing a lineage of feudal nobles and tring to bring more glory to your family then anyone else. To change that would be to make an entirely different game

yes it's possible but do keep in mind that historicaly republics that allow for one person or one family to stay in power passed a mandated term limit tends to have the power of it's citizenry eaten away untill elections are just for show and eventually phased out entirely. Rome is perhaps the most famous example of this starting with Julies Ceaser and his nephew Augustus. So the very act of having your republic elect the same family over and over is that it in effect becomes so much like a feudal system that eventualy the system of republic is gone. Theocracy might work better but only for "holy" or Mercenary orders. anything else just isn't quite right.

In any given game there are an uncountable number of things that happen that are not strictly "historical". I think whether it is possible should be the first consideration and believable the second. All of the things I mentioned fit both of those just fine. But like I said, the "fascination" with theocracies and republics isn't necessarily all about wanting to play them. There are modders who want greater freedom with modding them and players who simply want them to have more depth than they do currently.

I checked, and no. No changing succession laws. The little tab with them in them is completely blank. Nor can I usurp the Kingdom of England, as Republics/Theocracies are incapable of usurping/creating a Kingdom Title, only inheriting.

I can however marry and have children, obviously, so if I could change the succession, that would be awesome.

Feudal-but-Landless titles were playable without Game Over popping up prior to 1.08 as well. I know, because I successfully tested things with it. You just can't click and select them on the world map to start the game as them, for obvious reasons. With the exception being the Vassal-screen for a few.

I quite honestly don't get the fascination with republic/theocracy DLC. Since the whole game is based of Dynasties and since those don't get passed down in either i'd got to say the very attempt to play one would be a single generation game. I honestly don't think how they could oblige this without a complete rewrite of the premise of the game. Which is that you're playing a lineage of feudal nobles and tring to bring more glory to your family then anyone else. To change that would be to make an entirely different game

I very much want to play as La Serenssima or Novgorod the Great but this is the problem I'm having as well. I think the way to do it is to incorporate, for Republics, a system akin to CKII+'s estates. By which you would have a number of Patrician families within a Republic holding these money/prestige generating hereditary titles without having any actual holdings. Essentially: you wouldn't technically possess any landed titles but you would still generate resources and perhaps have access to retinues so that you'd have a placeholder position for when you are not the current elected leader of a Republic or any of it's provinces. You'd have a title equivalent to a Barony or County that'd be, say, Patron of House [Insert Name Here]. There'd of course be plenty of unique events, intrigue and decisions to keep things fresh and politically cutthroat. I don't know, I'm probably too sleep-deprived to make any sense but I just don't see how Republics could work as much as I want them to.

Hackworthy, I agree with you about that this is how republics must be done to fit within Crusader Kings. You should not play as a republic but rather as the different noble families within a republic. If Paradox would implement this well enough with a good UI for it I am certain it would be a very good addition to the CK world.

Well... I do agree with You. In a sense. Because right now we can't play realistically as feudal lord with all medieval connections, laws, customs.... I can't imagine how would they do this so it makes real sense.
