CHAPTER 21
1373-1380
WORKS OF DARKNESS

The 20th anniversary of Renovatio Imperii Act was celebrated in every corner of the Imperium. However even after the anniversary passed and the official celebrations concluded the Throne found himself blessed by Iesus Kristos once again.

cn7KXzQ.jpg

On 26th July 1373 porphyrogennetos Alexandros Angelos has reached the age of 16. Just like his brother, Alexandros was another pious Angeloi blessed with many talents among which the most important was his extraordinary capability in a demanding field of oikonomos, housekeeping and managing. The Augustus was pleased and the whole House Angelos celebrated for with every porphyrogennetos coming of age its sacred rule over the Imperium was strengthened. It was another evidence for divine rights of the Angeloi to the Throne which was in their possession by the Grace of God.

And so it was no surprise when several months later news reached Konstantinoupolis.

JVD79j2.jpg

On 18th February 1374 treacherous kaiser Theodorich von Zähringen died, leaving the fate of his realm in the hands of his son Ehrenfried. The new kaiser however couldn't hope for God's blessing – without any major talent and having to face powerful opposition from the German nobles alone, without his father's authority or support of the Imperium, his reign began not with celebration but with bloodshed. To further show all the Christians of Europe the vast difference between so-called “Empire”led by kaiser Ehrenfried and the true Imperium, the Augustus decided to retake ancient imperial lands. And so on 28th October 1374 the Fifth Imperial Reconquest was declared on Republic of Pisa.

bDsUuCs.jpg

Pisan merchants of course could not hope to stop the glorious Imperial Army and soon the war was over. Serene Doge decided to surrender on 16th May 1375 and so the thema of Modena has been created and imperial rule over these lands has been restored. Although once Pisans were a great obstacle in the plans of the Throne, these days were long gone. Slowly forcing out of the Mare Nostrum, the patricians focused now on northern Italia, Burgundy and southern Germany. Hoping that the expansionist policy was their salvation, they were trying to seize control over the trade between kingdom of Aquitaine and German realm. It was common knowledge that they didn't hesitate to trade with the terrible invaders from the Far West – a great sin for which they were sure to pay. Another victorious campaign to restore imperial limes only elevated popularity of the Augustus. However the Imperial Army wasn't the only one which was so successful on the battlefield.

ksGM4eb.jpg

On 8th July 1375 Aglhab Aghlabid called “the Liberator” by accursed Shia defeated one of the few independent Mongol horse-lords and seized complete control over emirate of Damman. Although old, he was still a capable commander – his cruel rule combined with harsh laws which he instituted made it possible for the Shia minority to stay in power in his small realm. Forced to tolerate presence of good Christians he made them pay jizya, special tax which enabled him to field a small but disciplined and powerful army. Without a doubt he was an exceptional man who almost single-handedly saved accursed heathens from extinction. Many of the surviving Shia even believed that Aghlab Aghlabid was indeed mahdi, a prophesied redeemer of Islam who was destined to rule over ummah before the Day of Judgment and purge the world from evil. This was of course only a Beduin superstition – according to reports from Skrinion Ton Barbaron he was not the most pious man. The whole idea was obviously a result of pure desperation of Shia whose last pathetic realm was about to be crushed by the Imperial Army. In the meantime the accursed Muslims rejoiced when they small realm grew – surely one of the last victories of the followers of the Prophet.

The Augustus however was occupied by much more important matters – his beloved wife was dying.

1P1HHXD.jpg

Despite the best medical care which could be find in the whole Imperium beautiful Iulia Balsamon was in a critical condition. Finally on 16th November 1375 the mother of porphyrogennetoi and true love of Luis II Angelos collapsed and while in comatose in bed gave up her spirit. The whole City was mourning for she was kind, merciful and pious, a great woman and empress, a true flower of the House Balsamon. A splendid funeral was held in Hagia Sophia in the following week.

But even in this dark moment the God was watching over his Imperium.

Y1dzrEE.jpg

On 12th December 1375 the long and bloody civil war between the horse-lords ended and to surprise of many the Great Khan was forced to accept the terms of the rebels who gained independence from the Horde. Several small realms were now ruled only by their own high chiefs freed from allegiance to khagan Bogorchu, among which the greatest and wealthiest was chiefdom of Tigris. This further weakened the barbarians and the might Ilkhanate was fractured. Without a doubt it was going to take a great deal of time and effort for the Great Khan to once again enforce his will on the separatistic horse-lords, time which could be otherwise used to attack Christendom.

But the worshippers of Tengri were not the only servants of the Dark Gods.

e5evq14.jpg

On 16th December 1375 the savages from the Far West declared invasion of Germany. Together with the terrifying cult of Huitzilopochtli who also declared invasion few days earlier the Aztecs were united in one goal – to destroy the German realm. Situation of kaiser and his subjects was desperate even before the invasion for the Germans were losing badly wars with Republic of Pisa – kaiser armies couldn't hope to stop the invaders. There was only one force in Europe capable of withstanding the furious attack of savage hordes and Ehrenfried von Zähringen knew this.

But the time has come to pay for the treason of his father. The Augustus saw no reason to pay with Roman blood for the land ruled by the same House which several years later betrayed the Throne by renewing the German “empire”. This blasphemous abomination was surely nor holy, nor Roman and nor it was an empire, despite what the German lords claimed. It was a preposterous caricature, a grotesque bastard of Frank king Charles Karling and heretic bishop of Rome, surely not deserving to be protected by the true Imperium which would be forced to expose its own limes for the sake of treacherous Germans. And so the Augustus decided that not even a single soldier of the Imperial Army was going to set his foot in invaded lands. The judgment was left to Our Lord Iesus Kristos – if the German realm was truly blessed by God, He would surely protect it from the barbarians just like He was protecting the Imperium for centuries.

And so the Day of Judgment has come for kaiser who, like every man, had to face it alone. But even in the City, so far from the lands invaded by savages their corruptive influence was still very real.

BvyZz1K.jpg

On 11th September 1376 Ausilia Caetani, mother of the Augustus, succumbed to terrible disease from the Far West known as syphilis. Brought by the Aztecs decades ago it was one of the main causes of death in the western Europe, surpassing even terrifying number of those who were killed by the invaders or sacrificed to their Dark Gods on obsidian altars. Syphilis known also as a Great Plague virtually wiped out the population of the British Isles after the invasion, leaving only 5-15% of the native inhabitants alive, most of them in the northern kingdom of Scotland. Clearly it was a punishment for their sins for all of them were guilty of Catholic heresy. But to see his own mother becoming a victim of the plague was a much greater blow to the Augustus than reports from distant heretic lands.

But as it was designed by God, death is a sister of life.

1XxfMYb.jpg

On 16th February 1377 porphyrogennetos Luis Angelos has reached the age of 16. Although not as talented as his older brothers, his coming of age was a cause of great celebration in the City. Among many gifts received by the imperial family from the Great Houses and aristoi there was however one which was very special.

x7dGPD8.jpg

A priest from Aegyptus arrived in the Great Palace carrying with him a knuckle bone of Severus of Antioch, monk, theologian and one of the leaders of the Monophysite heresy. Nominated patriarch of Antioch by the emperor Anastasius in 512, after the emperor Justin I, founder of the House Ioustinianos and uncle of the glorious emperor Justinian the Great, enforced a uniform Christian orthodoxy he became an enemy of the Throne. After his death on the aegyptian desert his remains were treated as a holy relic by the Monophysites. And although the Imperium facing innumerable heathens tolerated their presence for years after the liberation of Abyssinia, their heretical beliefs were never accepted. The knuckle bone of Severus were to be stored safely in the Great Palace so that nobody could ever hope of using them as a symbol uniting the Monophysites, for the heresy must be purged. Later events of this year only confirmed this – king of Aquitaine was forced by his subjects, many of whom were Cathars, to transfer some of his power onto them on 14th April 1377.

Several weeks after the news reached the City the Augustus declared war on Sanaa.

Fm3lrbh.jpg

Since the fall of the Caliphate this land was ruled by one of the several independent horse-lords. Without the support from the Great Khan the high chief couldn't oppose the might of the Imperial Army and by conquering these lands not only imperial fortress in Aden was to be secured but also a road to the last Shia realm would be opened. What wasn't expected by anyone however was Pisan revolt in Toulouse. Small minority of Romaioi refugees from Africe after it was conquered by Aztecs found a safe heaven there. But seeing how oppressive the Pisan rule is they decided that they want to join the Imperium rather than to pay taxes for greedy merchants and be exposed to Aztec raids. Toulousian Romaioi quickly formed local militia in May and after seizing control of the duchy declared independence and sent a petition to the Throne in which they asked for imperial protection. The Augustus obviously decided to protect the former citizens of the Imperium and after few days the Senate accepted their petition. Soon the Imperial Army was sent to new thema to protect the Romaioi from the oppressive Pisans.

The war for Sanaa was almost over when unexpectedly Bagaridai, Mongol high chief of this land, announced on 15th January 1378 that he and all his subjects have converted to the True Faith and as a Christian he asks the Throne to not attack but to support and protect fellow Christians. It was obviously a ploy designed by him to stay in power while simultaneously undermining casus belli of the Imperium. Alas, the Augustus was forced to accept this conversion – although the doctrine of a holy war was accepted by the Holy Church since the 13th century as one of the most important ways to protect the Christendom from the heretics and barbarians, the Imperium simply couldn't wage war against fellow Christians under the banner of Cross.

Then the terrifying news from Germany reached the Queen of Cities.

XGeU0nu.jpg

Our Lord Iesus Kristos judged the Germans as unworthy of His mercy. After long and bloody struggle the small forces of the kaiser were finally overwhelmed by the innumerable armies of savages. On 7th February 1378 the Aztec invasion of Germany has concluded.

9d0klz6.jpg

The death toll was catastrophic. Men or women, young or old, every German was now a slave to the Aztec overlords – but they were not interested in even more slaves. They desired death. And so whole cities were burned to the ground and enslaved Christians were forced to use what was left of city walls to built gigantic pyramids on top of which their hearts were carved out of them in a blasphemous acts of daemonic worship. Blood was flowing like a river and the bodies of those sacrificed to the Dark Gods were said to form piles the size of a church. Rape and torture become widespread and many violated women were said to be crucified after their death. Crops were burning and soon famine and disease once again were killing thousands. Even more found their end while they were trying to escape the Aztec manhunters through the Alps seeking refugee within the imperial limes – whole families froze during harsh winter. The Germany, just like England, France or Sweden before it, was dying in flames and screams of the sacrificed. What was left of realm ruled by kaiser was not bigger than a thema – Aztec beast devoured another chunk of Europe. To make it even worse, the terrifying Cult of Huitzilopochtli was still fighting against the Germans and it was only a matter of time before it was going to defeat them.

More bad news were to come however.

EnzXRKh.jpg

Khagan Bogorchu Csikid called “the Great” for reuniting much of the lands lost to the Mongol rebels managed to reinstitute much harsher laws in Ilkhanate on 30th April – the horse-lords once again become slaves to the will of their Great Khan. United by force and hatred of the Cross, the Horde once again become a real threat to the Imperium.

XkDMvfS.jpg

It was during these terrible time when porphyrogenneta Martha Angelos reached legal age. Although young she was already very capable in the art of diplomacy – so much that some of the imperial advisors started to think about forging an alliance with one of the few surviving Christian kingdoms, for it was obvious that without the protection of the Imperium they were to be destroyed sooner or later, one by one.

But death was a visitor not only in Germany.

4ZPGoAN.jpg

On 17th October 1379, one month after she gave birth to son of porphyrogennetos Markos Angelos, beautiful Eupraxia Dalassenos died of pneumonia – a terrible loss for the imperial family. Even the Walls of the City and the whole might of the Imperial Army couldn't protect her. Markos Angelos was mourning his beloved wife and the whole Great Palace was shocked by her death in such a young age. But in these dark times nobody was safe.

1o1YCHV.jpg

Violating the imperial limes, the Aztec savages attacked the church of the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre located in Germany, set it on fire and captured bishop Megistos, who was soon sacrificed by them to their Dark Gods on 22th November 1379. The Augustus couldn't tolerate this and promptly declared Sixth Imperial Reconquest of Kabylia on one of the rebelling Aztec lords. Bishop Megistos was far from being the only victim of the invaders however.

cLFtGFx.jpg

Kaiserin Astrid Fastesdotter, hiding in the countryside after the sack of the German capital and separated from her husband was finally captured on 10th May 1380 and suffered the same fate as thousands of her husband's subjects, her heart being ripped from her body and burned.

19DAA6o.jpg

Few months later the Fifth Imperial Reconquest has concluded – the savages from the Far West paid dearly in blood for their insult and the thema of Kabylia was restored on 28th July 1380. It was of little consolation however for the good Christians of Germany. Many of the aristoi were criticizing the Augustus, claiming that he abandoned his sacred duty as the God's Regent of Earth when he decided to not help the Germans. Some of the enemies of the House Angelos dared even to accuse the Augustus of being the sole cause of the suffering of good Christians, who were killed, sacrificed and devoured by a cannibalistic savage locust. These were of course lies – even the Augustus himself can't oppose the will of God and Our Lord himself found the German realm unworthy of His love and mercy. Furthermore, protecting the kaiser would surely cause great casualties among the Romaioi serving in the Imperial Army, thus endangering the whole Imperium, especially considering the once again united Horde. No matter the reasons, many of the imperial citizens feared what was about to come. Aztecs were perceived as almost invincible and there was nobody who could oppose their might but the Imperium. It was thought that the every Christian beyond the limes was to become a martyr, suffering a terrible death from the hands of barbarians. The threat from the Far West was never more real for the common citizens than during these days when Germany was being turned into a smoldering ruin, a true Hell on Earth.

At least, they were comforting themselves, it couldn't get worse.

Ack!

I hope that Timur and the Il-Khanate fight each other to a stalemate - maybe it will give you an opportunity to retake Bulgaria Moesia. But even if the Hordes manage to exhaust themselves fighting amongst each other, there's still the fact that the Aztec Empire keeps growing and growing... Pisa, hated Pisa, now forms a protective barrier between Roman Italia and the barren wastelands of Francia and Germania. It can't be much longer before the Aztecs come knocking on your door.

And so it begins ... ;)

Ok, this is not the ideal time for the Timurids to appear. If they had appeard while the Aztecs were in a civil war and the Khanate was somewhat intact, it would far better than now, where the Aztecs just finished a highly sucessful war versus the now even more than usual not Holy, not Roman, and definitely not a Empire and when the Khan just was forced to give independence to some vassals ( those will probably will be munched as breakfast by the Timurids ) and increased the crown Authority ( assuring a good bunch of rebelious heads in the case the Khan loses the war with the Timurids )...

Anyway, I guess this is probably the last time you have in the game before EU IV to have a free hand in the west. Do you think you can take on the Aztecs ?

When you make the transfer to EUIV you will face 2 disappointments. First of all the game has not half the depth of what I see in this AAR (haven't played CK2) and second it wont recognize the Roman empire as it is, it will recognize it as a Greek cultured nation and will give you the decision to reform the byzantine empire...
Also religion and the HRE, I don't know what will happen with that but it will be a mess.
After playing 200 hours I have to say that although EU4 isn't focused on personal relations it is actually much more complex - real diplomacy and trade alone make it much more challenging than CK2 IMHO. And yes, it will recognize it as Roman Empire in a converted save :)
It all began with the act of Saint Markos, when he immolated his children, as the lambs of God, in order to assure the future of the only one True Empire. Alas, the Lord this time did not hold the hand of Abraham Markos.
Xenos should be cast out of Europe!
Venerate Saint Markos and pray to Our Lord Iesus Kristos for the Augustus and the Imperium!
BTW "xenos" is a singular form (which for some reasons is used as plural in W40k), plural form is "xenoi". :)
I'm really curious as to what the Imperium's navy looks like. Surely, lots of gold and eagles everywhere.
And flamethrowers, dont forget the flamethrowers!
And obligatory angels for the glory of the House Angelos!
I once defended Constantinople from an entire Venetian army with just a single unit of Greek Firethrowers in Medieval II: Total War:Crusades
Me too! It was completely OP, you just need to put them in gate and they could obliterate thousands. I love the smell of pyr rhomaïkon in the morning...
Beware the Alien, the mutant, the Heretic. The Khan shall soon taste of Roman steel....
Or would he? He will face the Iron Khan for sure however.
Ack!

Yes, that's the plan - while Iron Khan and Khagan fight over the East the Imperium should reconquer Moesia :) And the Aztec invasion would be much worse if only Paradox didn't forget to give them great holy war weight in the files - they could use them but the AI can't choose any kingdom as target without the weight. So yeah, there could have been twice as much invasions...
And so it begins ... ;)

This is the worst time when they could appear - there are a bunch of independent high chiefs in Persia and Mesopotamia and if the Ilkhanata looses its troops during the war, there without a doubt will be more faction wars -> more independent high chiefs -> Iron Khan's realm growing very quickly.

Honestly I don't think it would be a good idea - this is the best time to reconquer Moesia, not to attack Aztecs. Timurids are one or two quick wars (probably) from bordering the Imperium, I don't want to loose troops and gold to fight Aztecs so that I will have to face Iron Khan weakened.
Wow, things are just going great for the Empire.
Obviously! If God is with us than who is against the Romaioi?
...
Wait, that would mean-

Fantastic!

We shall purge the Xenoi with fire!

Or would he? He will face the Iron Khan for sure however.

I totally forgot about Timur, this game just seems to hate Rome.

First Moesia, then Dacia, then the World!

The Might of Rome is Unstoppable, the Iron Khan is no different from the Il-khan and the obviously failed Golden Horde.

Obviously! If God is with us than who is against the Romaioi?
...
Wait, that would mean-

The obvious supporter of Heretics and Infidels!

IMPORTANT

Since there is 2.1 patch and RoI coming on Monday there is a problem of compatibility and exporting save to EU4:
Hey Groogy, sorry for bothering you once again but considering I'm currently writing AAR which I would like to continue in EU4, so I would really like to know for 100% and have a clear answer - will it be possible to play EU4 using exported save from pre-2.1 CK2?
Sorry for being a nuisance but it's kinda important to me :)
It should be.
However, since the old save can't be loaded and exported in 2.1 this means that I should finish the gameplay before the RoI is out (Steam autoupdate and all this). Which means during this weekend I'm going to play until 1444, export the save and finish CK2 part of this AAR - better safe than sorry since I would definitely hate it if there would be some problems with continuing this in EU4. But only finish this in-game - it would take a few weeks at least before all the chapters are released considering that chapter 21 describes the year 1373-1380, which leaves 64 years still to be written down.

Just letting you know.

All i saw was syphilis...:p

It has been confirmed that there will be a beta stream for the current version (2.04) on steam, so that we can finish our games/ not play with India. I don't know if it will still let achievements fire.

Btw does Pope exist anymore? I doubt there are many Catholics left but crusade would help a bit.
Honestly I don't know - maybe he's hiding somewhere in Scotland. Still, heretics have way too low MA to even dream about the crusade.

Syphilis, syphilis everywhere.
Thank you for the update, I look forward for your future updates
You are welcome.
Do whatever you need to do, this story cannot be allowed to die unfinished. :p

Yeah, well I think I won't take the risk of anything going wrong. It probably would work like it's been said by Doomdark and Groogy but if something goes wrong than the EU4 half of the AAR would be lost. I have some save backups from earlier years but they won't work with 2.1 anyways - btw if I only knew about RoI I would start this AAR in April to avoid all these issues. This being said, I think the safest way is to just finish the CK2 part of the AAR before RoI release, export it and then wait for the 2.1 patch. After the release if everything is still going to work, well, I'm still going to have 1444-1453 period to play, although it would be tricky to explain story-wise (calendar reform? EU4 starts in 1444 year).
Cough, cough...Hellinikon my Imperator, Hellinikon...Cough, Cough..... Damn cold....
It has many names:
Although the term "Greek fire" has been general in English and most other languages since the Crusades, in the original Byzantine sources it is called by a variety of names, such as "sea fire" (Ancient Greek: πῦρ θαλάσσιον pyr thalássion), "Roman fire" (πῦρ ῥωμαϊκόν pyr rhomaïkón), "war fire" (πολεμικὸν πῦρ polemikòn pyr), "liquid fire" (ὑγρὸν πῦρ hygron pyr), or "manufactured fire" (πῦρ σκευαστόν pyr skeuastón)
640px-Greekfire-madridskylitzes1.jpg

Plus "Greek fire" or "Greek Empire" or "Emperor of Greeks" were derogatory terms used by the Latin heretics - only proper adjective to refer to the glorious Imperium and its citizens is Roman and/or Romaioi!

How should I call it?

P.S. Even In my AAR the Byzantines are suffering.

Doubt that they will last much longer...

Well the common name was Greek fire, whatever the latins called the Romans it of no consequence whatsoever. Everyone is entitled to its own wet dreams.

That turkic band though....What type of music they play?
