Senator Helios IV Eliasian
My fellow senators, we are assembled to discuss first the dark mater of the slave trade. Senator Colombo has proposed one amendment of it: it is good but I would like to propose my own change of it. One: No citizen of the Kaysrutyun may be subject to the horror of being a slave. Two: No true Christian- this exempts the heretic Catholics, of course- may be a slave. However, we must make the difference between true Christian and false furasteri {{(xenoi)}} or monghols only converting to not be persecuted in the glorious Kaysrutyun. These we cannot show mercy to- they will continue to worship the false dark gods, even after having promised not to do so. Therefore it is clear that we cannot try to "convert" them; the furasteri and monghols cannot be asked to convert.
On the second point, I am clear on this: the Kaysrutyun must retake the land of Syria and Egypt from the sons of Timur. Not only will this strengthen our position and weaken the heathens, but the reataking of Egypt will provide a strong base to explore the faraway lands of Hindkastan and Cina.

Senator Nicholaus II Este-Ravenna

*The past six years have changed the Senator. No longer the frivolous fop of his youth, in his mid-thirties he is a dogmatic conservative and militant supporter of church and state. His interests have shifted firmly from the social to the spiritual- patronizing the best and greatest theologians, church renovations and acts of charity. Having served with some distinction in Crimea he is convinced that the army must be strengthened further. Exposure to court politics has led him to suspect that only the blessed Angeloi and perhaps their most faithful servants are truly within the reach of salvation, for men are cruel and fickle and selfish even when blessed by souls. Thes and other matters he has discussed with the Metropolitan, and some suspect he is considering defecting to the whites.*

While I agree with Senator Colombo that good Christians are not to be held in bondage, yet all men are to bow before the Emperor and serve him in their place. Is a slave so different from a serf?

Our tagmata are the sword of God, and I urge all to remain steadfast in their support of the army. Egypt must be reclaimed.

Senator Anastasios VI:
*Anastasios rises to speak again. Those six years didn't change him a lot- still a diplomat who does a good job in talking himself to power, and a great supporter of exploration. However, he came to understand that if he plays his cards right and push for exploration a bit later he will have a better chance to succeed with his life long ambition- an ambition that most people don't know about, more than merely sending explorers to new lands. Anastasios also developed a deep friendship with Senators Lazaros Melissenos and Hadrianos Raoul. Through the years, rumours continued to spread about his house- same old "Jews, Pagans" accusations- but now that he was close to the merchant class he and his allies were able to efficiently silence the rumours. However, some rumours couldn't be silenced and the rumour of him beign a Homosexual was widespread.*
You speak wisely, Senator Taurinus. Indeed, we cannot allow the Imperium to be so dependent on unruly slaves- working in farms isn't a dishonorable job only fit for slaves, there are many true Romans who would do that.
I would like to express my...
*A man enters the hall after beign allowed in by the guards, and asks Doux Maximos to speak with Anastasios. Anastasios quickly talks to him*
What happened, uncle?! Why did you enter the Senate?
"Your son was found, Anastasios... He is quite reckless, isn't he? Unfit to rule a house, just like you..."
*Anastasios looks at his uncle with disgust, and coldly replys*
Forget it, Pontius. Even if you succeed with your plots against me, you will never become the head of the house- I have much better candidates for a heir than you, slime.
*Pontius begins to answer, but Anastasios signals the Senate guards who escorted Pontius to show him the way out*
As I was saying, I would to express my approval for a heavy focus on military right now- but if we win the war with the sons of Timur, I believe that focusing on administration, trade, navy and- most importantly- exploration, will be the wisest course.

{{Is this role-play ok? I mean, I didn't bring any human or object into the Senate, Pontius brought himself. :p
Also, it's interesting to see Senator Colombo turning into a power thirsty dictator of the red demes... A really interesting character.}}

{{In reply to Parrotguy}}

{{I wouldn't call him a power-thirsty dictator, more that he was previously using the Reds to achieve political goals, but he has grown accustomed to the Reds and now is really far more of a natural Red than he is a Blue. In some respects, Domenico is more sincere than he was last session. That's why I find it funny that Este-Ravenna is thinking about moving to the Whites; The Reds are far more conservative than previously, and Domenico at this point probably finds more in common with the Whites than the Blues in terms of philosophy.

In addition, it's also to create contrast between Domenico and his son. If anyone wants to PM me what they think Christoforo's secret is, they are welcome, you'd have to do some really deep digging to find exactly what it is though. I'm actually having quite a good time researching Christoforo's character, both for the real-life Columbus and other topics. I won't actually respond to any of the guesses though, for obvious reasons.}}

{{I'm afraid not - you may only write in-character as your Senator (the one included in approved application). I may turn a blind eye on writing letters to other people but playing two characters during Senate Session is something I can't tolerate - not because I want to limit your creativity but because of the rules and chaos which would surely follow if everyone suddenly starts playing several characters at the same time. Sorry but that's how it has to work - I hope you understand why.

I won't give you a warning for this but next time if you have any doubts it's better to PM me than to post first and ask second.}}

Fellow Senators,

It is clear that the... setback that we suffered in the lands of Taurica can only be interpreted as a sign from God to punish us for the recent lack of Faith that has plagued the Empire. It is sufficient to remember that the Most Sacred Chapel of Theotokos has been savagely plundered by heathens only a few months ago and that the works to restore it to Her former glory (financed by the House of Rhadenos and the Whites, let all remember) are still under way to see how lowly has fallen the respect for the One True Faith! Had we enforced a stronger union between the Holy Church and the Imperium those blasphemies and such a military defeat would have never happened.

But let us not waste time grieving on the past, let us instead concentrate on the Future!
The Emperor, in his unlimited Wisdom, commands a further strengthening of our Military Forces, the Whites therefore can only stand beside His Will and shall support His rightful demands. The Military reforms we started six years ago are not yet completed and if we want to take back Taurica and other rightful Imperial lands then we MUST complete these reforms as soon as possible, once we will have done this then you will see that within a lifetime we will have thrown the horse-lords and their slaves beyond the Ural Mountains that spawned them!

Now, on the matter of Egypt, I say to not waste any more time and drive the Shiite Pagans back to their hellish wasteland of Arabia, to venerate their Demons and false prophets and never return! The reconquest of Egypt must not be delayed any longer, let us send all of our forces to this Holy quest, let us take back our bread basket and secure our borders in the East once and for all! Then we shall be free to concentrate on the threat of the beastly Xenoi...

And at last, there has been a lot of talking about Slavery.
To enslave fellow Christians is indeed a terrible sin, for Christ came to free all men and put them under the ever-shining Light of the Lord, forever ending their spiritual bondage to Demons and false idols. Therefore it is illegal and punishable by death to enslave the free peoples of Christianity, whose spiritual freedom allow them to recognize the natural hierarchy of the Universe and willingly submit before the Emperor and all Christian authorities as loyal subjects of the Imperium.

But of course it is no sin to enslave someone who is already a slave: the barbarians and the heretics are unable to behave themselves properly, like children they are enslaved to their own basic instincts and are doomed to the fiery pits of Hell if left on their own, it is therefore not only legally allowed, but also a moral duty of all Christians, to enslave all those who live beyond the limes of proper Christianity.

With a Christian master the poor unfortunate souls of the heretics and the barbarians, who have rejected the Truth of Christ, have one last chance for salvation. They are rightfully forced to embrace the True Faith, for their own good, and are taught to behave like Christians by their pious masters. They work in the caves and in the camps for the betterment of Christianity and sustain the nation of God, even if not willing. Through harsh work and benevolent punishment they are purged from their sins and pay for their blasphemies. So, once they die after a life of suffering and forced labor their Souls will have earned their place in Heaven, completely purified from their old villainy and pure in the eyes of God.
And all of this only thanks to us pious Christians and slave masters, we are helping those people to ascend!

So remember, fellow Senators, that through Slavery we are selflessly helping countless of otherwise lost Souls! Remember that our slaves must always be grateful for the precious opportunity we gave them when we captured them, that through forced conversion we give them Eternal Salvation and that through harsh punishment they gain Expiation from their sins.
Slavery therefore is indeed a merciful institution, that does good to the Souls of both the benevolent master and the repenting slave! It is something that should be expanded as much as possibles through all of the Imperium and therefore the Whites shall support the temporary exemption from Taxation proposed by the Enlightened Emperor, may He rule long and Piously.

Now, for Xenoi...
They are not slaves, for the same reason cattle and sheep are not slaves. When they are concerned no moral question arise and all are free to do what they desire with them. Except of course sympathize with them, which is the worst of Heresies...

- Theophilus Rhadenos,
Metropolitan Bishop of Tiberias

((I hope that I didn't went overboard with the rant on Slavery.

Anyway people, remember that the Whites can reward any newcomers with juicy titles, four of them! Being a Fanatic is Fun, try it you too! ;)))

{in regards to titles, we'll see what titles Maximos gives to faction leaders this time around. I wouldn't be shocked to see the Reds get the most; we have isolated the Emperor after all! I hope this doesn't jinx it though, ha.}

{In regards to the slavery thing, I think pretty much any comment is on the table assuming you don't use modern slurs and make sure that everything is clearly 'in character'. This is grimdark after all, and these attitudes you use would persist on a large scale through Vicky 2's time period. It would be odd to impose our values on this reality.}

{A question for Czoklet: Can we award titles during elections? I would like to know how far we can go with bribery, now that the Whites have brought it up.}

Senator Michael Scipion:

Dear senators, there is an elephant in the room!!! )Many senators look at Michael thinking that recent war has taken its price on Scipion´s mind. He always was a bit weird but this...)

This elephant is called State of Siege. The Imperium, the last bastion of God will on Earth, is besieged on all the sides by heathens. In the north the horde of horse-men have just taken another piece of Imperial territory. In the East, the Timurids still enjoy the richness of the Egypt they took a few decades ago. In the South, who knows what Diabolo´s creatures awaits. In the West, the own Hell´s creatures menace the Imperium. There is just a fine line between our Imperium and eternal condemnation: the Imperial Army at the command of our Basileos.

This is an uncomfortable truth, but a reality.

The basileos, in all his wisdom, has required our advice on the subject of focusing in the Army. The answer is evident: YES!!! :)rolleyes:) During the next decades, may centuries, the Imperium must be a military stronghold who defends Christendom against Lucifer´s beings on Earth.

And if we are going to defend Christians against the Devil, which place will be better to start by than the own Empire?. As soon as the Basileos commands, the Tagmata should crush the Timurids and recover Egypt for God...

The same God that teach us to respect all the other human beings. I must say that I do not tolerate slaves on my lands or to my fellow familiars, even if the Basileos in all his wisdom allow it. I consider myself a good Christian and I think that all living beings, even Devil´s sons (the Xenoi), deserve mercy; the mercy of Roman iron cutting through their necks. So no more privileges to those who trade with the lives of others. To be allowed to continue with such business is already a privilege.

And Xenois delenda est!!!

{{You mean during voting while Senate is in session or during elections of the Faction Leaders?

And yes, the setting is not only grimdark but also set in a pre-modern era. Rremember that we're still in late middle ages and that your characters can't possible have morality or perception of reality of an average white middle-class male who lives in a western democracy - and I guess this description fits to most of us here pretty well ;) }}

{elections of Faction Leaders. Senate votes are where they will normally be, right?}

*Alexander ponders silently as he hears Senator Rhadenos's speech, thoughts going back to his homeland in Egypt and upon the ongoing debate about slavery before making his mind up. He then stands up to speak.*

My fellow brothers, I must find myself to agree with the most honourable Senator Rhadenos, what the Imperium must do is to reclaim back our rightful land in Aegyptus...
As for the slavery matter, I believe that the Timurids, while not as monstrous as the filthy xenoi must be treated the same as all invaders and uncivilized 'men' as the Roman Imperium did in the past. With fire and sword but also with whip and chains.
Our savior Saint Markos did not save us from our doom so long ago to simply forgive those that have raped and slaughtered our people, regardless of their origin, be it Pisan, Mongol or xenoi. No! GOD AND THE ANGELOI DEMAND COMPENSATION AND JUSTICE!

*Flustered and quite red, Alexander sits back to his seat and watches the rest of the Session in silence.*

Senator Septimark Wedrovander:

I must say Colombo your dog seems to be a bit nippy mayhaps you ought to give him some ointment with the Poppyseed you provide him. I would also ask if you could give the recipe it seems to work on the other senators as well because all of you are ignoring one crucial thing with your rightful calls for vengeance. That is what is the western devils up to while we're in this... skirmish with Hun lords in Dacia. If they're preparing an assault we need to be ready, or if even the Pisans consider a assault we need adequate troops to mount the defense. Until the rest of the reforms are done we need to keep the number of wars we fight down to one or else we will be overwhelmed. If the west is busy then I say mount the assault immediately and begin the counter scourge of the Timirids. If not lets us counsel patience in our attack against them. We have time to kill the Timirids they do not.

As for slaves I think that we ought to consider regulation due to the fact that with all this war they're becoming more numerous that we are. Also to not offer any incentive for slave raids will keep more of our warriors with us instead of heading into the boonies and taking slaves before they have the means to keep a hold of them. On this note could we not consider doing what the ancient republic did where a man could free himself though wages after a time for those who willingly become Christians?

{{To andre it's k the rp is becoming quite good although be prepared for yet more angst this character is just angry this session. To Malfoy it isn't that I completely disagree with your points at this point but the rp is just begging for the responses that he has been delivering. Also if you decide to offer the olive branch Wedrovander could be an ally but if not he will probably be an enemy until he dies which maybe soon i'm thinking of killing him by the time he is fifty or so.}}

Senator Gaius Arrius

Fellow Senators, while I agree with most of you, I must remind that, while I do not condone merchants' insatiable greed, the Imperium must have funding for all of its glorious actions. Without the taxes gained from the slaves, we will have less to spend on vital matters. I am not opposed to the idea, but I recommend against it.

{{I just sounded pro-slavery. The madness is getting to me...}}
