I tried out William the Conquerer, and after winning got Phillipe II of France excommunicated. Eventually an independence war broke out, Causing the dukes of Aquitaine and Toulouse to win their freedom. Sadly Aquitaine never did become a kingdom. Anyways, because of France getting weakened so badly, and the Iberians getting thoroughly trounced, this happened:

The only crusade the Pope called for so far was on Sicily, which I won and gave to some nephew of a nephew or something, and while France was fighting its independence war, the HRE had a massive one of its own, that lasted a good 10 - 15 years at least. And at the time that picture was taken, the Almoravids were invading Brittany. When they won that was the last straw for me, so I holy warred them right back, with my Byzantine allies (who for once not only beat the Seljuks, but never got invaded - at least not successfully - by the Fatimids). Not that I needed them. My doomstack was only around 12-14k troops, but it was more than enough to trash the Almoravid forces they managed to throw at me. And now that I've wiped out their European doomstack, I suppose I might as well break truce and continue holy warring for each duchy. Except Toulouse, which it looks like Genoa is on the verge of taking. But it is so freaking annoying that they can invade an entire kingdom, while I'm stuck with only being able to attack duchies.
