I find him welcome, It's good EU4 players are getting fed-up with Paradox's bad work (EA) ethics. The only way paradox will change is if the community lets the studio know its unacceptable to be releasing broken DLC that people spend their hard earned money on.

Yeah, it's so unethical how Paradox continue updating their game for free whilst releasing optional expansions to finance that work.

I usually don't write much on these forums, but in this case I think I'll add my voice: as some others, I'm not very happy with EU4 since the last patch. There are especially two points that bother me: the change that allies can now be called into war after 60 days, and (more importantly), that AI countries can now forge alliances and call them to war DURING a war. Example: I recently played Najd, declared war on Yemen who at the time had NO allies. About a year into the war they made an alliance with Beluchistan and called them into the war. This was NEVER possible before, why now?
Some of you may like and defend this change which is fine by me, but personally I hate it as it means I can never know who I'm going to fight: declare war and fight just the target, or be called into a major war against the Ottomans or France? Click the button and you'll be surprised! :p

I'm a casual player, I have no real wish to relearn the game every time a major patch is released. It's already irritating enough that I can't continue save games, but now the rules of the game change "just because"? How long until Paradox finds out these changes weren't so great after all and reverses them, forcing me to again relearn the rules, just like the former AE changes?

The effect of all these patch changes is simply that I abandon the game and don't look back, just like I did with CKII after ROI. I'm sure I can't be the only one, but who knows?
Oh yeah, I know I can revert to an earlier version and might as well, but then it's 100% certain I will never buy another DLC for this game.

This is nice to know, but if Steam is w/o my permission going to "upgrade" my game to 1.8.0 why stop there? I play outside of Steam and this unauthorized download of 1.8.0 happened while I was reading guides, which has me aggravated enough, but to start this process before a "viable" version is established is inane. Why doesn't Paradox insist on a purge of buggy versions so that customers get the "latest and greatest" instead of what they know is a piling steam of (insert expletive)? I have better things to do with my late Saturday nights than chasing down Steam/Paradox-induced stupidity.

For now I have rolled back to 1.7.3 and will await resolution of the problems, but having to refrain from visiting Steam to peruse valuable learning material is hurting my ability to play this game (BTW it is also a contractual breach). I am no fan of Steam and a big fan of Paradox. These two need to get together and get their act straightened out.

Edit: I am glad to see that the EU4 forum is as good as the HOI3 forum. The people here are very helpful and quick to respond - Thank you.

Yeah, how dare Steam auto-update a game to make sure you have the most recent version. That's just completely inexcusable because... reasons? You also do realize you can turn the auto-update off, right?

And then you mention in the exact same post that Paradox has given you the ability to roll back to the previous version of the game, despite the fact that they have no obligation to do this, and therefore fixed the entire problem you had without you even having to ask for a solution first. I really don't understand the point of your complaint.

This makes war riskier and more unpredictable, which is a good thing.

And yet, it removes all kind of planning and might basically present you with a game over situation (minor declaring war on another minor, dragged into war with Ottoman). To me, this is not good game design, though I understand how some might yet prefer it that way. The ideal solution would be to make it an option before starting the game, but we all know Paradox's opinion of options ;)

becomes clearer. Steam didn't take me to the latest version - unless of course the latest version wasn't available last night. Steam took me to 1.8.0 instead of 1.8.1. And what about "...w/o my permission..." don't you get? Unless there is a secret location I am unaware of I have blocked Steam from auto-updating anything. Your assumption that I am stupid enough to allow ANY program to touch my software without my permission is at a minimum insulting. Furthermore, that Paradox has given me the the ability to roll back to the previous version isn't the boon you make it out to be, especially since it was Steam/Paradox that got me to the unsatisfactory place I need to "roll back" from.

Someone please tell me that this person is in the minority of what I will find on this forum.

Because it's the beta patch, not an official release and it can potentially introduce even more instability than the base patch. No sane software is going to auto-update to a beta version for obvious reasons.

And again, you can set Steam not to auto-update things. So maybe calm down, because it's neither Steam's nor Paradox's fault that you don't know about how to use Steam.

From my perspective, this game used to be crap but it became a holy pile of gold with 1.8.

I was sorely disappointed with the way the game was developed after 1.2, and eventually stopped playing altogether. Returned for 1.8 and game's better than it's ever been if you ask me.

I agree completely with this. Returned after about a year away from EU, and having a blast.

I don't think it removes *all* kind of planning, it just means that your plans are more likely to fail - or succeed, if you are the minor making the alliance.

Unless there is a secret location I am unaware of I have blocked Steam from auto-updating anything. Your assumption that I am stupid enough to allow ANY program to touch my software without my permission is at a minimum insulting.
Well, you were getting very angry about Paradox auto-updating their game without mentioning you don't auto-update. I'm not sure how assuming something which is required for your complaint to be a personal issue is "at a minimum insulting".

Furthermore, that Paradox has given me the the ability to roll back to the previous version isn't the boon you make it out to be, especially since it was Steam/Paradox that got me to the unsatisfactory place I need to "roll back" from.
Paradox giving you the ability to roll back (why the quotation marks?) from something you don't like to something you prefer is an issue... how?

Someone please tell me that this person is in the minority of what I will find on this forum.

Actually, I am almost certain you are in the minority.

EDIT:

I agree completely with this. Returned after about a year away from EU, and having a blast.

1.8/AOW is a massive improvement. I'm assuming the OP is talking about a few minor bugs, many of which were fixed in the beta.

Being unable to play the game is not minor, though the beta did indeed address a lot of that.

Most of the patch features aside from horde nerf and the ludicrous native colony nerf are a big step forward, the first time I've been able to say that about a patch in a long time.

This. *Drastic* changes in *minor* patch of *basic* game mechanics is a sign of non-existing planning and awful execution. AE, vassal feeding, you name it.
It's hard to achieve the holy grail of "game ballance", I understand. But it appears, that PDX not even trying.

But that is only half of a deal. I don't think there is many people who actually expect any professionalism from game developers. But this:

How could you explain this? PDX know that there is numerious bugs that make vanilla 1.8 virtually unplayable, yet there is no statement about it on Steam whatsoever. This smells like "sucks to be you! We don't care neither about our customers nor about our reputation".

And would you please stop this "FIXED IN BETA!" business? How people are expected to know about it in a first place? And why they have to jump through hoops to be able to play some *portion* of the game?

I bought AoW solely to say thanks for working on the game. And what I've got in return? In return I've got something, that generated 2+ pages of bug reports in a first few days if not hours after release! Now if this is not an active discouragement to buying DLC I don't know what it is.
Yeah, sucks to be me, indeed.

I find the latest patch with AOW the best EU iteration. Ever. Better than EU2 at last. The reformation events and religious wars are awesome.

I'm amazed a guy a few posts above is moaning because AI can call in allies during a war. How is preventing them doing that in any way constructive to a believable game? (I won't say realistic because MeInTeam will go off on one). Although it was annoying to relearn it I agree - I denied France calling me into 'them vs. everybody' only to have them offer me alliance and call me again a few months later. Ermm...how about NO, again?

I'd like to congratulate the EU4 team for moving things even closer to the ultimate game...original poster, maybe this ain't the game for you or something, I dunno since you weren't very specific.

How could you explain this? PDX know that there is numerious bugs that make vanilla 1.8 virtually unplayable, yet there is no statement about it on Steam whatsoever. This smells like "sucks to be you! We don't care neither about our customers nor about our reputation".
But 1.8 is playable. It has some bugs, but it is playable.

Bugs that are causing me to be at war with Ming and almost make me lose the game within the first ten years make the game unplayeable for me. Bugs that cause me to miss out on half of my income for ten years make the game unplayeable for me as well.

There's no excuse to have bugs like this. It's pathetic that we're at the point where this is expected. Where people don't get excited anymore for a big update, but where the expect there will be a hotfix needed first that fixes MAJOR performance/balance issues followed by a complete (1.9) patch 1-2 months later to fix another load of bugs.

*For some people. Many who didn't buy AoW were unable to play patch 1.8. No, a beta that fixes some of the problems is not acceptable. Most people won't bother to subscribe to a beta on Steam.
So, how much do you want them to divert from production? 100k? A million? Wiz has already stated that their test computers had no issues. That doesn't mean that no computers will, though. The only option then is to build an even wider variety of computers. How much time do you want to take away from development and bugfixing for this? The issue is that it's just not economically feasible to test for every computer set up because there are so many variable parts in a computer.

This is amazing! Please improve your reading comprehension so that this

becomes clearer.

Charles AFAIK Steam always auto-updates the game even when you tell it not to update, it is silly and annoying but that is how it currently works. If you don´t want to be surprised your best option *might* be to play the game from a backup copy in another directory (copy and paste the EU IV folder usually found in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common). I said *might* because it seems there was/is a bug that forced you to launch the game from steam for the AI to play at its best.
