Uhm - this wonderful piece of work (patch 1.8) is highly suspect to me. I purchased EU4 with the recent sales promotion and have put in countless hours playing the game in order to learn it. During these hours I have experienced zero technical difficulties and then uninvitedly v1.8 shows up, leaves my saves unplayable and after starting a new game CTDs less than two hours in. Not the best of starts!
If you're running it in Steam, you can "right-click, properties, betas, (drop down) Beta Patch 1.8.1". They resolved performance issues within days of it being released. While it sucks that the issue happened in the first place, it's practically unavoidable, short of building a thousand thousand computers of various makes and models from stock to homebuilt to test their game on with each new patch.
Just look at the forum threads within the past 24h period, you will notice many grievances.
'Paradox has a well-published way of handling reports of any issues with their products, and I am sure that they make every effort to fix them.'
Lo, like how they fixed the non-host can change game speed?. A problem that has persisted within the game since its very first day of release?
Shall I name more bugs that have been in the game since its first day of release?. What I find hilarious is how you assume Paradox has a well-published way of handling reports. Paradox shouldn't have to handle reports from its paying customers and should instead be handling it internally through a QA team. Being a multi-million dollar publisher/developer and forcing your customers to pay $20 for broken DLC is unacceptable and if you think it's a 'fundamental flaw in how customers interact with game companies' when people are pissed about that fact that they spent their hard earned money on a unplayable beta then you need to open your eyes.
Again, a QA team, short of getting a thousand thousand computers, wouldn't be able to catch these things. Beyond that, I've not seen anyone complaining of bugs or brokenness. I will admit to having seen quite a few frustrated people over various changes, though. What he means as the fundamental flaw is rage. We need to be able to sit down and give P'Dox fine, concise points as to what we don't like and what our issues are. We argue it rationally and calmly. Threads that have OP's like this are readily ignored because they either look like trolls or are otherwise just part of the reactionary movement that every patch has.
And I'd like to note: This pleasant response comes from someone who argued for several pages on the issue of the "50% min LA for Natives" and who was utterly unable to play the game because of crippling lag. I may have my frustrations with P'Dox, but they're still a wonderful company that I'm glad to support with my wallet.
