After about a year of not playing EUII I finally decided to pick it up again last week. I installed all of the latest patches, setup the AGCEEP, and began emmersing myself in the game again.

I decided to play as France with the ultimate goal of conquering Europe entirely. By the time I got Louis XVI as my monarch I owned all provinces up to the Polish border (I gobbled up the Holy Roman Empire, Itlay, Spain, and half of the British Isles).

I spend the next couple of hellish decades facing the French revolution but by 1795 everything has calmed down. My stability is +3, I have 17,000 ducats in the bank, my inflation is only 16%, Land Tech is maxed at 60, I have Bonaparte as a general and my army is over 1,000,000 troops strong. Time to finish out my task before 1819, right? WRONG! Just as I begin preparing to invade Poland the game crashes to my desktop. I reload the game and it crashes again within a month's time. Both my manual savegame and autosave seem to be corrupted. I cannot go more than 30 days in without crashing.

I've just wasted 20+ hours to play to this point for nothing. I want to cry... :(

I have the game to autosave every year. So the earlier autosave shoots me back to 1794, but once I hit Mid-1795 it crashes again. Something is happening to me in that year that is causing the game to crash every single time.

It's not that I didn't enjoy playing the game up to this point, it's just very upsetting that I cannot finish what I started.

This happened to me as portugal. I had a massive colonial empire but half way through 1578 the game crashed. I kept loading the autosaves but it would still crash at the same point.

But i worked out how to fix it. I loaded the game, and then did some different things in the game, then i saved it under a different save game name. I loaded that one, and the problem was solved. hope this fixes it

You can try playing past the crash date with a different nation then save after the game normally would have crashed and then play on with your original nation.

Try to remove all history in the end of the save game file
you know the large part with
name = "May 12, 1435 : My Lord, our State Gift has drastically improved our relations with Austria. They should be " etc

That saved plenty of mp games in earlier patches at least, dunno why though

I use a utility I got from State Machine. (He says you can find it on Harvard's site.)

It runs in the background while playing. It renames (to game date) and archives (moves them another directory) your save games. Thus, I auto save every year and have a copy of every year's save.

I ran into your problem a few days ago. The last save kept crashing. So, I just restarted from a point further back and everything worked.

A whole GC consumes about 500Mb of annual saves, but you can set a max number of saves to keep if you want.

The zip is about 30K. You can email me if you want it.

It might be a problem with a AGCEEP event. Try renaming the french event folder to something else and see if it works. (I had a similiar problem while playing mataram, but after I edit out two french revolution events, it worked fine again)

Maybe you are low on hard-drive space? When the save-game gets big enough the autosave can maybe cause a crash.

Well, I tried several different things including deleting the game history log. Nothing worked. Sometimes I'd think it was working because it would let me play for a year or two before crashing but I never got past 1799. No matter which files I loaded from I would always crash between 1795 and 1799. I'm definitely not running out of HD space and my CMOS battery is just fine. I'm sure it's a glitch with AGCEEP but there's no way I'll be able to pinpoint it.

Anyhow, thanks for the advice. I already gave up on trying to play that game. I started a new GC with the Ottomans and it's working fine so far.

I had a simlar AGCEEP problem with Poland once. Couldn't get past a certain point. Tried playing some other countries then switched nack to Poland. Game crashed again. But I never deleted the history log, so that might of been the thing to do. :)

A lot of the game is stored in RAM while playing. If a corruption happens, it will get saved to the Autosave and the oldautosave, and upon crashing you will find that both are also corrupted. I usually save about every 3-5 years (around July) to have several independent saves. That way you don't lose the entire game. From time to time I delete the old savefiles when I see that the new ones work fine. The game also writes a lot to HD while playing. I have 1.5 Gb free and if I play for a long time I run out of HD space (like in photoshop). Quitting the game and re-starting helps, but reinitialization is the best cure to re-zero that space.

It's always possible that it's a single (presumably untested) event causing the problem - can you tell if the date is always the same?

Some events don't happen on a given date, but inside a window as soon as triggers are met. Do you remember any event firing just prior to the crash ? Or do you remember what happened just before ?

You may also be able to check your history file to see what happened just before the game crashed.
