Take a long break from the game and do other things. I got burned out as well and I knew it was time to walk away. As a result, I haven't play an EU game in over 2 months and it's not even installed on my new laptop at the moment (though of the course that will change soon).

Alternatively, you could throw yourself into modding to fix the problems that you perceive the game to have.

One thing that might help make games more interesting is to avoid using all the power-gaming strats. No NI swapping, no abusing the PU system, no release/re-conquer vassals, no scorching your own territory, expand logically (not by scattering into high value provinces), etc. While these things aren't "cheating", they do make the game a lot easier (break it?) once you know them all.

One option I would like is the ability to randomize the base tax values; even just changing them all in a range of -2 to +2 would probably have a significant impact on how the game plays out. Same thing with the starting universities. Part of the re-play value of games like Civ, even after you master the mechanics to thrash the ai, is that you never know what the world is going to be.

I don't know if you know about this, but there's this guy on here named Wiz. He also posts at Something Awful, and he makes really, really good mods. It isn't out now, but he's working on a mod for EU3 that should make the game much harder (in a good, not cheating way). One of the things he's done is remove the exploits you can do against the AI. If you want you can follow his thread at Something Awful here: http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C...hrome&ie=UTF-8&q=islam+is+the+light+zerbaijan (first link)

It would be nice to play a version of EU3 where besides missions and localisation and flags, the nations were somewhat unique. It feels like playing one country in EU3 is playing them all.

Role playing is the only way to avoid this.

how about some of the AGEOD / PARADOX FRANCE games?

Got Pride of Nations on the release week and it left mixed feelings - looks like a game full of promise and potential but not very playable yet, then again I'm rather busy with RL ATM, if I had more time, I'd probably accept a game that is so raw just for the sake of learning the game better.

P.S. Darkest Hour is a pretty sweet game for a change, riddled with typos, but really ejoyable and easy to learn.

Stop playing the grand campaign. It seems like you have a solid grasp of how to build up your empires faster and more efficiently then the ai, so why not start on an equal level?

Try to fight off the Austrians as the OE in 1760's and then you'll have a challenge.

Wow, I see a lot of good ideas for myself too! I'll pu in some extra "+1's" for playing a mod, learning to mod, playing V:R, and reading a book in addition to playing multiplayer.

edit - Talking about being bored is making me want to plan something interesting, like, maybe, go to New Orleans for Mardi Gras next spring.

then you've gotten your money's worth. Games aren't meant to be infinitely replayable; it sounds like you've played it at least dozens, and more like hundreds of games. Congrats, you've played the game out; and probably played thousands of horus. So go buy another.

I've never in my life gotten more out of a game.

Honestly I`ve only had the game for about a week and I find myself playing 20 years or so then quitting and starting over again with another nation...repeating etc...etc...Not entirely sure either...I suppose I Just feel like I am doing the same over and over again, putting merchants in markets, starting little and joining little wars where I can barely gain a province without tons of infamy (yes I understand the CB etc...) When I played as portugal it seemed like colonizing was a very tedious process of the same thing over and over again. Not entirely sure really, maybe it`s just that right now I`ve become a bit bored of video games in general (although I haven`t been playing them for quite some time) Also, it`s not because I am on of those people that needs flashy graphics and constant killing-action.. I much prefer a good stragey game with indepth diplomacy, economy, many decisions etc...

The first 20 years for many countries are somewhat boring. Either you have not much to do because you're waiting for a specific event to happen (gotta wait for France to get bogged down in a war with someone) or you're doing routine, easy things like absorbing OPMs while your real opponents do the same. The game only gets interesting for mid-sized powers and up when they start tangling with each other in a significant way.

For small countries the experience can vary wildly from the day one "oh s___" DoW against you to centuries of boredom because no one looks in your direction (Cyprus until France loses SoI for example).

As far as infamy goes, the worst case you can get is 8 for a single province and your limit will generally be at least 2.5x that. A little infamy is no big deal to deal with. There have been many times over the years when I've danced with the limit for various reasons.

IMO this is probably the best historical based game out there for providing strategic depth without getting bogged down in micro-managing. Vic 2 is really enjoyable right up until you become a GP and have to start dealing with the SoI game, for example, as it then bogs down into watching enemy influence bars and reacting to that. I tried PoN but it has a similar feeling of your empire being too big and there being too many tedious tiny details to handle. Another perfect example of that sort of thing would be MoO 3 vs the spectacular (IMO) MoO 2.

...Tin Soldiers and its ilk are awesome...

Interesting...I had never head of this game before... I'll check it out, thanks.

...The absolute best, most realistic tactical games all seem to be civil war games. I remember one, the name escapes me, where you couldn't see your soldiers and had to issue your orders by messenger and pray that they were timely, relevant, received and would be followed, and as much as I really enjoyed that kind of realism and strategic depth ....

That actually sounds like a really interesting/amazing system. Could you try to remember what game it was? I would love to try and play it sometime...
