I am an experienced HOI2 gamer. This game was sold as easy with mods, since all mods go to a directory of its own. That was bs, I now have 3 installations of DH, and every single mod needs different kind of installation and setup maneuver.

For example some mods do not work with the latest beta, but you have to actually re-install the latest stable version since after all it does seem that MODS USE SOME DIRS OF THE VANILLA. Or why else they dont work with the latest beta? Then again, some other mods require the latest beta and don't work with the latest official version at all, jeez. So you are required to have AT LEAST two installations atm but the number will probably grow like rice in China soon.

God bless me from times when I actually play several mods and each one uses a different main version of DH.

Every single mod requires a new installation just like with any other HOI version.

Some modders develop for the Betapatch, some others are older or they don't, what you expect from other modafine games like Kotor 2 or Oblivion. Not all Mods run with the newest Patch and must be converted. Shall the developers stop improving the game via Patches just because for the mods?
I got one installation and it works with all my actuall mods.

I haven't had problems with mods, and even make my own custom version of the game tailored to my own interests. The mod folder system makes that easy, and the developers can't be blamed for what modders do that might not work.

I only have one install and it works fine. Some mods like Kaiserreich have two versions, one for the latest stable version and one for the beta patch. I don't know all the mods out there, but I think it's pretty harsh to expect perfect compatibility with beta patches, which are explicitly marked as beta. It's certainly nothing you would expect even of a full-price game from a major publisher (unless they never do patches). The latest stable version is very playable and I don't think the team's patch policy is bad at all.

It depends on what mod you want.

Most mods, if installed correctly, should run fine with the latest beta. Emphasis on most. The game engine is quite backwards compatible since it will read parameters from vanilla if missing in an outdated mod.

I try to keep my mods updated for the latest version, and I keep an older version that works for 1.01.1 in the thread header...

Solution is / should have been:

1. Installing a new DH patch must not interfere with earlier mods. It should not modify files that are in general directories that mods use. In other words, mods should not be dependent on general dir files.
2. If the previos point is not possible the patch should be a mod itself, ie. installed in a new directory without destorying the previous general files.

1. So you want each mod to require you to do download their version of the game? Each individual mod would the same size as the vanilla game!
2. In this case you would have to manage each patch AND the mods, meaning you would have to keep up with which patch mods are compatible with. Also I don't even know if this would be technically possible.

I give you a more simple solution, don't use mods that have been abandoned and don't work with the latest version of the game. I have 6 mods installed, all of them use the latest beta patch.

An example..

Day one there is
general.file and moddable.file only for vanilla

Day two the mods make moddable1.file and moddable2.file, everything's still fine.

Day three, however, there is a DH patch. It should not modify general.file so that it affects the way the mods work. If it must patch that file, then it should leave the original general.file on the directory so that the mods can still use it and the patch should install the modifications (general2.file for example) for itself on a new dir. By modifying the general.file and not leaving the original file the patch is destroying the mods.

The directory system works fine for me. I have Mod 33, Kaiserreich, and Fallout mod and can switch between them and the base game on a whim without separate installations of DH. You complain that not all mods are compatible with the beta, but this isn't DH's fault. Some mods just haven't updated and saying that the devs should always keep patches compatible with the previous version of the game heavily restricts what the devs can add in the patches. I really don't see what your problem is.

Why should modders update their mods for every single beta?? That's ridiculous. The betas are breaking currently working mods for stable official versions which is absurd. Yes people wanna install the beta but the problem comes when some modders follow the beta and others don't and soon you have 5 installations again. Deja vu buddy deja vu. Beta is beta for a reason and I can't see why modders should always update their product like hawks just to keep it plain working.

The fix would have been to introduce a patching system that won't affect the way previous mods work.

You can go to ANY mod thread and see how people are asking questions which version does this mod work with and why does it crash with the OFFICIAL version lol and most of the talk is about hotfixes and bs. This is all technical stuff that takes away energy from developing the actual enjoyable content of mods and the game.
