Hi all,

I am not looking for a comparison of Vicky to HOI2DD or anything like that.

I have HOI2DD, EU1, EU2, EU3. I have looked and looked at Vic, but hesitated to purchase because I didn't like HOI2DD as much as I thought I would.

I like the complexity, etc. but was disappointed with things like the AI could send aircraft over immense distances (not realistic) to attack you, etc.

Vic looks to me like it would suit. Much more complex that EU2 (I don't play EU3 b/c my laptop doesn't have the right kind of video card - there's money I wish I had back in the bank...) but with simpler technology, etc.

Am I on the right track with my thinking?

Thanks,

Vicky has much less "AI cheats" than HoI2. Also it is indeed much more complex than EU - and if you like complexity, Vicky is really for you. Best Paradox game by far and with the most complex economy. I can recommend it very warmly. :)

Anyone who's considering buying Victoria is on the right track. :D

But seriously, the warfare in Vicky is much simpler than in HoI2DD but more complex than in EU2. But since this allows the AI to not totally suck at waging war, it's a good thing. I mean if the AI country you're attacking has a comparable army, you're in for a fight. And bloody at that.
The tech tree is definitely not simpler than in EU2, each time you finish one tech you have to choose from five groups that are interdependent to some degree, and this makes research strategy important. And to be able to get all techs that are in the game within the game time-frame you must trade techs with others, at least if you're not the UK.

You'll spend lots and lots of time playing Victoria and you will find it hard getting sick of the game.
The game is completely fresh compared to HoI2 and EU2, but yet retains the flavour of a Paradox game.
I'd consider Victoria my favourite Paradox game, wiht EU2 running a close second.

I got Victoria when it was released and still am playing it (with the addon and VIP). There are many things going on in the background which you might not be aware of when playing for the first times. However when it all opens up it's truly great..and time consuming!

Okay, so I have Vicky now (thanks for all of the helpful comments) and I am going to download revolutions as well.

Now for the VIP - as a newbie I am a bit (okay, a lot) confused about the vast tangle that are the various VIPs to download.

Can someone give me the list of what I want and the order to install same?

Thanks!

I'd suggest playing a few games with the vanilla version first, to get the hang of things. Vicky is difficult enough to learn as it is.

This is really good advice. The VIP developers really do recommend that new players of Victoria : Revolutions get the basic gameplay concepts under their belt and feel comfortable with the various game elements first before delving into the VIP mod. The sheer number of events that many nations have can be very, very distracting if you are still learning the rudiments of the game.

That is great advice. Thanks.

I am trying out a game as Brazil, in accordance with the VickiWiki - but I suspect things have made it out of date. By 1840 I am no where near on track with the suggestions posted in the wiki.

However, I think I can pull it out - if I can figure out why my manpower is at -4 even will full defense funding.

Back to the manual.

Thanks again. So far I am really liking what I see and I will hold off a while before trying VIP.

It will gradually rise when at full defense spending. If it doesn't (and claims thatyou can have a maximum och -4 manpower in your nation), convert some pops to soldiers.

Right. Now I need to dig out of the manual how to do that very conversion.

Thanks!
