Hi all. I've heard a lot of good things about these games over the past few years, and am pretty much decided at this point to give it a try. However, I'm wondering which game I should start with first: M&B (original) or Warband?

As I understand it, Warband is a more polished game, with multiplayer (doesn't matter to me), and slightly deeper gameplay. However, it's also €10 more than the original M&B on Gamersgate, and since I'm not sure if I'll like the game (I generally HATE playing any kind of non-strategy PC games with a mouse), I might be better off with starting out with M&B the original.

What do you guys recommend?

Warband definitely. It is the quasi-sequel/expansion of the original, so everything is more polished, deeper, etc.

But if you are unsure if you'll like it, head to www.taleworlds.com and you can download the game and play in trial mode. You can play 30 in-game days and up to level 7 on a character. Plus as many "quick battles" as you'd like (though the size is limited to 25 v 25). No multiplayer, but that doesn't seem to be an issue for you.

Warband. And wait for a sale. You could pick it up for 8 quid when F&S came out, it should be that price again.

Warband is the same game + an expansion. they add some basic quests, improve some mechanics and expand the map. As for difficulty, if you play on the easy settings and get some decent armour you are pretty invicible, F&S is much harder in this regard.

I just wanted to let you guys know that I took your advice and bought Warband off Gamersgate about a week ago (only 20 Euro - I didn't feel like waiting for a sale, since I was on vacation last week).

Wow. I must have already played over 60 hours by now. This is a fantastic game, one of the best I've ever played in nearly 30 years of gaming. Has that same addictive quality as the Civ and EU series.

I'm pretty much crap with melee attacks, but damn - horse archery is fun! Plenty of strategy, too. My first character was a trader. I started over with a second one, who makes his money off prisoner sales. Very different gaming styles. I haven't even gotten to the point where I set up my own kingdom. That will be really interesting when it comes...

Just wanted to thank you guys again for the recommendation. I'm sure I'll be picking up Fire & Sword as well in the not-too-distant future.

WFaS is a stand-alone expansion to the first Mount and Blade. It lack the features in Warband such as custom kingdoms. It also lacks modding (For now).

Warband until they patch up WFaS a lot.
