To answer the topic starter: There isn't many other strategy games out there giving you a more challenging AI then EU3. So yes: buy it without any hasitation. This game also offers loads of difficulty levels. When you have learned to master Very hard on larger nations, you can pick different start years to make it harder, or chose smaller nations with expansionist neighbours. There is almost a limitless range of difficulty levels and replayability that way. This game is actually one of the few I can enjoy playing SP.

Statements like these make me wonder whether we really play the same game. I love EU3 but the AI is bad in so many ways that it needs an incredible amount of help to just not basically kill itself all the time.

It's true, though. Out of Paradox Interactive there are few games that offer challenge without AI cheats. EU3 is not that hard and complex, AS SOON AS you are reasonably competent with it. It still presents a learning curve that is more of a learning cliff.

BUT when we compare the AI to other games, EU3's is relatively good.

Of course it still makes stupid errors, but hey!

I see some comments stating that EU3 isn't as deep as some other strategy games. If that's the case, which games are deeper? Im not familiar with any of the other Paradox games at all.

They are probably referring to Hearts of Iron III and Victoria II even though in my opinion that is more of a case of mixing up complex with complicated. Get EU3. Best stuff. :)

Ditto. If you like a lot of detail (minutiae?), some of the more complicated titles might be for you, but in terms of strategic depth, EU3 is as good as anything else out there (Paradox or no). Frankly, I prefer a certain elegance and minimalism in my games. Mind you, it's all relative - all of these games are widely perceived as having a pretty stiff learning curve. Actually CK2 is probably the easiest, if you're just starting out (though it does lack a certain depth, IMHO), but if you've played HOI3, it shouldn't take too long to get used to the EU3 mechanics (less of a pure war game, though).

And I'd definitely get the latest version, if only for the map. Achievements never mattered much, and won't at all, it seems. But I much prefer Gamersgate to Steam, FWIW, they never had an achievements issue, IIRC.

Thanks for the replies. FWIW, I bought Chronicles last year and Im happy with the complexity. I should really get round to registering my game on here!

I know of Hearts of Iron, but the way it was explained to me is that it's all about war and battles. I don't know Victoria at all, but I always thought that it's pretty much the same as EU3, except that it's a different age. Am I wrong?

First of all, what paradox games do you have, if any? If you have some, then that should help ease the learning wall.

The AI in this game is much better than, say, the TW series. I usually tire of a game in a month or so, but in the two months or so I have had this game, I have never come close to tiring of it. This game is worth every penny.

I would definitely recommend the expansions, as they improve the game exponentially and deal with bugs.

The AI is incredibly bad about declaring wars but it's even worse when fighting it: tt easily loses them despite superior numbers (even against non-player countries) because it is so bad at fighting and when it just happens to win at war it will generally pick nonsensical demands. When it it's not at war it sucks at empire building and will sit on huge piles of money while still minting and not constructing any buildings and will eventually self destruct from rebels even though it was in a decent shape.

The EU3 AI is horrible. It needs help just to survive, let alone pose a threat to the player.

It's still a great game, mind you.

Yes, the AI is horrible if you compare it to a human, but it's pretty good if you compare it to the AI of other strategy games. You actually see it doing some pretty smart stuff tactically, like attacking you immediately when you siege or feinting in one direction and then attacking you from somewhere else--not that it's a good tactician, but there are a few nice wrinkles.

If you want a human-quality opponent, you won't get it here, but I don't know where you will. Still, I think you will be pleased with the ranges of difficulty offered. You can start out by taking somebody like England, Burgundy or Austria on Normal difficulty and steamroll the AI while you learn the game, and then move on up to playing Epirus on Very Hard if you've a mind to. Somewhere in that range I dare say you'll find the level of difficulty you're looking for.
