  • Europa Universalis III
I have tried the demo and although I don't understand much of the game yet, it feels like an interesting game. So I am thinking about buying the game. But I am a bit anxious that the game after a time might get pretty boring because it so large and as a result may consist of many repetitious tasks.

I like games like civilization, total war series and other strategic (board)games.

I hope you can give me some advice.

It isn't boring, a grand campaign can take you weeks and many a time I've found myself awake at 5 am.

It's true that sometimes you don't go on anymore, but after a few weeks it starts itching in the back of your brain as you come up with a new tactic for a new nation or something.

If you're into the non-battle portion of Total War, then you'll like this game too. It essentially plays as a rather more complex version of the turn-based parts of the Total War games.

I'm a huge Total War- and Civilization-buff, and this game is right up my alley...so it'll probably fit you too. But it does take a long time to learn, as there are many many more factors to take into account when playing than there is in for example Civilization.

Just about anyone on these forums will recommend EU3, of course, but it is a good game. As you point out, however, it has a steep learning curve, and some people don't adapt well to how open-ended it is. Civilization, for example, has ways to 'win' the game - you have to decide for yourself what 'winning' means in Europa Universalis. In addition, it's a strategic game and not a tactical one - don't expect to have control over battles or intricately detailed armies. If you can handle that, it's a game well worth buying! No other game out there has so many AI factions and so many possible countries to play, or has so much historical detail.

I concur, it is well worth playing even if the learning curve is steep.

Do take a look at the wiki and the "what I wished I knew when io played my first game" page.

Hands down the strategy game that has gotten the most gaming hours out of me, and I'm still far from tired of it. There's just so many different countries and ways to play, and so many different ways the game can evolve. Total War has nothing on EUIII.
