The Austrian Empire and the Ottoman Empire held an incredibly firm military alliance with each other throughout the entire Victorian Era, and neither of them had anything to gain from the other, nor were there any cultural tensions between them.

What I've learned from Victoria: The 1.3 Beta Edition ;)

While most Internet memes can be traced to the early 21st Century, one meme actually boasts its origin in Tory politics of the Victorian period.

The Yo' Dawg meme, contrary to popular belief, has nothing to do with a popular television show, but has everything to do with the problems faced by Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, and the Tory party during the tumultuous period of 1903-1909. During his tenure as PM, Petty-Fitzmaurice continued the State Capitalist and Jingoistic policies of the past 40 years, declaring war against France twice and trying to steal her African colonies; however, the failures of the 3 million man British army to secure victory against the cheese-eating, wine-drinking French proved very unpopular. Reactionary rebels, tired of the incompetence of the Tory party and its reactionary policies and ideology revolted both at home and in the vast factories of British India, as depicted in this photograph.

V2_50.jpg

The unrest was widespread enough that George Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston, stood before the House of Commons and spoke mockingly of the Tory PM, saying, in part, "Verily, Prime Minister, I have heard it rumored that you prefer Tory policies. So it is that I have sponsored some Tory-minded ruffians to forcefully negotiate on your behalf. This should enable you to contain Tory policies within the violent outbursts of Tory ruffians, so you can enact reactionary ideologies within a framework of reactionary politics." The speech was a rousing success when it was reported to the House of Lords, although Curzon was vilified in the House of Commons. The vilification was so bad that a portrait of Curzon's was defaced with graffiti, and can now be seen in the British Royal Museum.

torywithintory.jpg

Of course, Petty-Fitzmaurice managed to turn this to his political advantage. While he did order the army to gun down the reactionary rebels, he simultaneously argued that British failures in its wars of imperialism were the result of the socialist and undemocratic stance of the overwhelming majority of peers in the House of Lords.

V2_49.jpg

Within a few years, he would convince the crown to name enough Tory MPs to the peerage to overcome the entrenched political elites and end their reign of socialist terror through the use of the House of Lords veto.

- Austria collapses apocalyptically for no good reason in the 1880s, and loses half its nation each way to Prussia and Italy.

- Azerbaijan can form in a region where none of its cores are located.

- Britain has to become bourgeois and then presidential dictatorship before it can become a democracy and contrary to popular belief, it somehow keeps all of its satellites and vassals through that.

- Austria has nothing better to do with its entire navy than move it out of port and stick it in the Bay of Venice (when it no longer owns Venice), to let it slowly die of attrition.

- French Canadians like living in Leeds.

- In 1880 Iceland had triple the population it has in 2012.

In the Victorian era, when a mobilization order was given, guns magically appeared in the hands of the masses who magically organised themselves into standing armies, crushing the invaders who were just spreading throughout the country to stand around idly for months in order to occupy the provinces they were in, even though the professional army was already destroyed and no forts were present. Ugh. FRANCE.

- All of the UPCA´s problems can be solved by simply shooting some rebels in the face during the opening months of 1836.
- Long military marches by huge armies through neutral territories were not unusual; the French would often march through, Italy, Austria and the Russian Empire while fighting wars in Asia.
- The British show little interest in the Suez channel, preferring to let the USA build it instead. After all, what possible use could they have for a channel which links the mediterranean to India?
- The hated nation of Bolivia was destroyed after the third war against the Chilean-Argentinian alliance, resulting in its annexation by Chile. ((This is a regular occurrence in my games.))
- The European Great Powers were a peaceful bunch, almost always preferring to add undeveloped countries in Asia and Africa to their sphere of influence to annexing them.

Spain will always claim Taza from Morocco, but hardly ever will claim Ajdir, the most logical one, where they already have a city (Ceuta too in the real-life, but just Melilla in the game), is in front of its coasts, and the most strategically important.

Prussia will only form the NGF when you're not looking at that part of the world, and never form Germany.

France will be your best friend as the UK, fighting by your side, months before attacking you over a colony.

Maybe they do that to maximise their font size?

*In order to train any sort of modern military, vast quantities of alcohol are needed to make the new knowledge of warfare stick. Despite this, in emergencies (or at any point it feels like it) the government may instantly summon (without complaint) a force that greatly outnumbers its regular army, is just as competent, provides its own weaponry and training, and, inexplicably, requires no involvement by the breweries.

*Due to an international agreement between capitalists, a general rule of thumb can be applied to alcohol availability during wartime: If the player needs to train new divisions, the required liquor will be unavailable for at least eight months.

*Despite controlling every other region of the nation, it stands in violation of international law for a rebel group determined to overthrow the sitting government to declare victory until the capitol has fallen.

*Even if the national navy can reach the destination of the colony, the colonists refuse to even prepare for the voyage before a military naval base is established nearby.
*As a corollary to the above, if a naval base is required and speed is of the essence, capitalists have somehow monopolized all the available construction gear in the province for the purpose of building a railroad isolated from the national network.

*It is completely possible for a lone man living in the desert to be 81% Bureaucrat, and fight his own crimes with less than 100% efficiency. Also he can somehow reproduce by budding, but no one else is close enough to confirm this theory with observation.
