I've played a couple of games in the WWI era, just test runs so far to see how things work, and I have to tell you that I REALLY miss strategic redeployment. I remember how useful it was in moving troops rapidly for offensive and defensive purposes, and the railroad was the primary means of moving large bodies of troops to and from front line areas in WWI.
I started as Germany, and the expected pre-war events fired off mostly fired off without a hitch. Then I noticed that only France was a member of the Entente, not Russia. So when the Serbian crisis erupts, only Germany, A-H, and Russia mobilized and went to war. Three times in a row, in three separate games. This makes things very easy for the German player, except for one thing. By November, the only reinforcements that have arrived from the west are the cavalry I sent over, as the infantry are just entering East Prussia. An army marches on it's stomach, but mine brought their walkers. Please bring back strategic redeployment. The only other thing I've managed is to wait on the building of a fleet of transports to move troops rapidly along the coast. No nearly as practical.
England had no part in this in each case. I'm guessing because France didn't declare war upon Germany (Or I on them), and I did not violate Belgian neutrality or independence (guaranteed by England since 1831). I guess the usual bugs are still being ironed out here and there, but so far the first World War is the first World bore. I'll keep on playing and see if things change in future games.
