Let's get the hate out of the way. But first. Thank you Paradox for a splendid game!
The current AI. Quite a few of the historical events have no way of happening now, unless the country is run by the player. I know this has been addressed in other threads, and I do like a challenge, however some things don't make sense.
I'm in the midst of a game as Japan, and went with the dutch letter. Sold my freedom for tech, feels good
Now after heavy industrialisation I wanted to get some colonies going around the 50's, the traditional japanese waters sounded like a good idea! But horror of horrors! The US had colonised just about everything in the pacific! Nothing left for the imperialist Japanese. Well, couldn't be helped. I decided to pounce of my friendly Korean neighbours instead.
I leaned back, industrialised a bit more, and got my Korean subjects firmly under my heel. When the CSA popup came up I decided to bring out the popcorn, and turn of fog of war. Now imagine the surprise when I see the US with 130 divisions facing the CSA's 15 or so divisions. No way this could work out, even when the US had decided to hand away California and the other nearby states to the UK in their settlement. Surprisinly the CSA did manage to stave off the inevitable, and by 1868 the US decided to call it a day, and settled for a peace taking away large chunks of the confederacy. By now they've taken away most of it. Down to 10 or so provinces.
Well, now that the ACW was over it was time to look at europe. The austro-prussian war was coming up, and that would provinde some fun while I kept building up for an attack on China. But alas, even here I was disappointed. Austria outnumbered the Prussians by some 4:1. 70'ish vs 250'ish divisions. They failed to protect their allies, but punced the Prussians in the face. Net territorial gain for the prussians, but their military power was halved.
Now up to current events. I've outclassed the Chinese army in just about every confrontation, I've got +40% in peace resolution, but they refuse to give me a single province in return for peace. The same was with Korea. I had defeated every division they had in short order, but there was always one province somewhere that had to be under their control. In the end I had to garrison the entire country, and systematically put down one province at a time. Even with 100% in the peace resolution, but 1 province under resistance control they refused to give me more than 3-5 provinces. Take the last one and they yield everything to me.
Just to sum up, my main annoyances are:
1) AI doesn't act even close to historical. One of the high points of Paradox games are that they're more or less alternate history. What would happen if they did that instead of..... Now the AI expands madly, without regard to what the population of that era would have thought of it.
2) In the specific case of the ACW, the CSA are almost always outclassed by the US from the very start. IIRC historically they had an equal, or even slightly larger, army at the outset of hostilities. At least nothing near the 10:1 odds I see before conscription. Could partially be attributed to the mad expansion in 1)
3) Peace settlements. This is actually what annoys me the most. The AI is very reluctant to give up provinces, which isn't always a bad thing, but also that it yields too little prestige. My current war with China cost me 40 prestige, and if I want to end it now I get 20 prestige and no provinces? If China will agree to a peace settlement at all that is.
4) This is a very minor annoyance, and might even be completely unfounded. When you've taken a province from the enemy you have to sit on it. Unless you keep it constantly garrisoned during the war partisans pop up. I didn't think they were all that common during this era? I want an option to execute the families of the partisans
5) The game eats away the precious time I should have spent studying for my exams :/
Now to the high points of the game. Everything else! I love the game, I love the gameplay, I love everything! I've asked the game to marry me, but it just keeps saying something about unknown command. Fix that plz kthxbye
What I enjoy the most is the industrialisation. The feeling of acomplishment when you can finally stop buying your arty from the world market, and when you can equip 20 infantry divisions at will. Putting the world at your feet, etc etc
A rather good job of making a splendid game out of a complex industrial and social model. After the initial clueless clicking I went thru it all makes sense!
Now where do I send the much deserved christmas presents?
