Overall I think the new training / recruitment mechanic is a big improvement, so that's exciting.

Really not thrilled by the sprites doing pushups and jumping-jacks, however. This kind of smacks of the devs having a good laugh (and much deserved, I don't doubt, I'm sure they are working extremely hard and are under a lot of pressure). However, I really hope this doesn't make it into final release. It just looks incredibly childish and detracts from the game's seriousness.

I'm not against humor -- I think a lot of the humor in CKII works, i.e. it's in small enough doses that it doesn't detract from the game experience, but enlivens it because it's used sparingly and to good effect. "It's good to be the king."

The pushups and jumping jacks just seem out of place to me. It's going to feel like a joke that gets old very fast.

How bout a simple icon that indicates the unit is training -- akin to what you get in Vicky II, when units have artillery or aircraft attached?

Sprites doing pushups = immersion killing

IMHO, of course.

I seem to remember this from Red Alert. Turns-out it was easy enough to ignore.

I thought the sprites were pretty cringe-worthy at first, but you have to remember this is a game and it shouldn't be taken seriously.

...but yeah, not a fan of little army men doing jumping jacks on-screen...

Sprites doing pushups = immersion killing

: )

Yes, I know plenty of folks feel this way. Myself, I though HOI3 got it exactly right by giving you options; sprites only; counters only; or my personal favorite, counters most of the time but sprites at maximum magnification, which was a very elegant solution.

Still, merits or demerits of sprites aside -- the push ups etc. just strike a false note to me. When I first saw the video from PdoxCon, I thought, "they can't be serious." It just looks too comic. In a bad way.

@Lermontov -- I agree 'it's just a game' and like I said, I'm not opposed to humor in games. But in this case it feels like the joke's not worth it.

I'm against doing pushups and jumping jacks in real life.

: )

I don't mind it, think it's a good way to note which units are doing what at a glance.

I'm all for the idea of being able to tell at a glance -- I just think little men doing jumping jacks is a needlessly silly way to illustrate the point. Like I said, how 'bout something like the icons hovering over units in Vicky II?

Having all info readily to hand when making a decision and telling what is going on at a glance through combinations of shapes, symbols, icons, colors, motions, etc. is ideal.

Maybe there is something better, but soldiers doing gymnnastics reminded me of the short promotional (propaganda) films of the era shown to display to the civilian populations the vigor of their armed forces, ready for anything.

It could be where someone got the idea from.

So I think it's fine (won't get re-started on corps/army/group/theater hierarchies for command and control).

I think the animations are great. They let you tell at a glance that the unit is training and they add some fun character to the game. At the end of the day, it's a video game, it's supposed to be fun. Paradox has always had a sense of humor with their games (like the comet events or the portal to hell event chain in CK2).

It will increase sales of the pseudo-counter DLC.

Hell, I'd pay $5 not to see any sprites doing push-ups. As a land whale, the mere sight of exercise fills me with disgust. Paradox with their fat hate, as is typical.

Not sure about it, to be honest, doesn't look that "serious" to me, and this is a WWII game. I agree that some "gallows humour" is a good thing, but don't go overboard and make the game silly, please.

I'd much rather have soldiers drilling (if that's what you call it in English) than push-ups to represent training, to be honest.

I'm sorry, but the sight of helmet-wearing, fully kitted-out soldiers doing jumping jacks is just ridiculous. Careful not to bruise yourself on your entrenching tool! Hope those grenades aren't primed!

Your statement that "Sprites doing pushups = immersion killing" is so ridiculous a statement that I'm having trouble taking it seriously. Are all sprite animations "immersion killing", are you just opposed to the sprites and find everything about them objectionable, or is this one animation so completely offensive to you?

Major states (moving, fight, training, idle) for units should have discrete, quickly identifiable, animations. What would you suggest for an animation for training that would be immediately identifiable as such? An animation of war game exercises would look too similar to actual fighting.
Flag icons would acceptable for sub states (suffering attrition, isolated, out of command range, has a given support brigade, re-enforcing, etc) since those happen while a division is doing something else, but for something like training, which is an exclusive action, would leave you squinting at all the like icon flags to try and determine which divisions are standing ready for action and which are training and not prepared.

I'm having trouble taking your ridiculous riposte seriously. It should be clear from what I've written that I'm not opposed to sprites. I also didn't find myself squinting helplessly at the screen in order to tell if units in Vicky II had artillery or aircraft support. The icons did the job perfectly well.
