I know its been done before. I don't really care. Austria is a great country to play and a wonderful one to do an AAR about. It has the greatest combinations of power and vulnerability, and a historical air about it only comparable to England and France. Truly, a blast. So, for my first EU II AAR as well as my first full Campaign (AoE), I decided upon Austria.

As a note, I've played many many years ahead of the story. My plan is to write this all down in decade long segments, so without further ado...

The 1490's. A quiet beginning.

You may notice from my notes below that I personally do not show up very prominently in any of them. So, I'll just have to tell you basically what I was doing. First of all, I was sending out merchants by the boatload. As many as I could get my hands on, and sending them about everywhere. Andalucia was particularly rich, so I was particularly active there, though I also sent merchants to Venice, Moscow, Thrace, and Flandres. I was also saving (and loaning) a lot of money, waiting for Infra 2 when I could build a Fine Arts Academy in Vienna. Finally, I was building up relations, most notably with Bohemia and Bavaria, two of my potential "early targets" for vassalization. In the end only one would go that route, but you'll see that for yourself later on. Mostly, I was just watching and waiting, getting used to Austria, and the relations of the countries around me. It was not particularly exciting, but it was extremely informative. Anyway, the notes themselves.

January 1492 was, of course, active. On the 2nd Granada was annexed to Spain. Who saw that coming? On that same day France declared war on Lorraine, bringing along its allies Savoy, the Pope, and Brittany. Further, Poland and Lithuania went to war with Pommern, whose alliance decided to abandon him. On the fifth the Turks went after Ragusa, and on the sixth Muscovy brought its allies Crimea, Ryazan, and Pskov into a war with the Tuetons and Prussia. Sweden separately decided to DW the Order on that same day. Coincidence? Obviously that last is the most important of the wars. The others I only note because they involve major countries, or at least those close to me. Suffice it to say that the major countries are not the only ones declaring petty wars. What's 1492 without them?

February saw Eire declare independance from England. I decide that apathy is indeed the best policy; however, it does break up the Spanish alliance, which can't be bad. The 26th of that month sees more interesting news as Brandenburg joins the Poland/Lithuania alliance. I'm not sure that I like this, but I'll see. I do, however, concentrate a little more closely on raising my relations with my neighbors. First and foremost, because I want an alliance, but I keep in mind the VP's one gets from being elected HRE. Spain certainly can do without.

Four days after Brandenburg joins the war with Pommern, Poland makes peace, recieving 200 ducats. Not bad. On the 1st of July, France annexes Lorraine. I'm not exactly shocked. On the 13th of August, Venice brings her allies Mantua and Milan to war with Ragusa and her new ally, Hungary. Now, there's nothing wrong with wanting to annex Ragusa, but Turkey is already seiging it. You can't hardly split one territory, now can you? Oh well, it should be an interesting conflict to watch.

On that same day Savoy declares war on Helvetia, bringing along France, the Pope, and Brittany. I hardly notice at the time, but this ends up being a very important development. Also, on the 5th of September, Lithuania declares war on the Tuetons, bringing along their respective alliances. I'm beginning to get worried; Poland and Lithuania are being far too adventurous for my tastes. I guess I'll just have to, um, do nothing. Cause that's what I do.

February of 1493 is even more interesting that February of 1492, from my perspective. On the fifth, Denmark militarily vassalizes Mecklenburg, which does not bode well for the tiny nation. I should note that I am not mentioning most wars, but will occassionally mention how one ends, if something important comes of it. Similarly, I may mention the start of a war but not its conclusion if it really isn't noteworthy.

Anyway, back to the story. On the 5th Modena calls Tuscany, Genoa, and the Knights to war against Milan, Mantua, and Venice. Suddenly northern Italy is aflame. I decide I probably should get involved if anything happends to Milan, otherwise I'll just enjoy the show.

On May 26th Spain and Portugal go to war with Navarra and Saxony. It lasts considerably longer than I expect it to, but the results are really rather predictable. On June 24th I am surprised to learn that Morocco has joined the French alliance. Well, I'm sure it has its reasons. On the 21st of August I get a new sovereign (Maximilian I), who is also voted Emperor. Party time!

On November 23rd the first result of the Italian war is that Modena is vassalized by Mantua. It only lasts about 18 months, but I'm sure it was good while it lasted. On December 6th the Ottomans annex Ragusa. I really don't have time to care about that when I hear that, on the 26th, Hungary has joined the Poland/Lithuania/Brandenburg alliance. What's a Hapsburg to do?

On March 1st of 1494 the Ottomans declare war on Dulkadir. Yet another brief war about which I really shouldn't care. March 7th sees Pskov declare war on Lithuania, meaning that the Russian, Polish, and Tuetonic alliances are now involved in a horrible military three-way. Is there any way for none of them to win?

January 6th of 1495 brings with it the annexation of Navarra by Spain. Oh well. On March 13th Modena joins the list of dead nations, annexed by Venice, though it will eventually return. And, strangely enough, October 1st sees the beginning of Hungarian dreams of a Baltic empire, when they annex Pskov. More for me to annex later.

On March 21st, 1496, Dulkadir ceases to exist. On June 5th Moldovia, deciding it really didn't deserve to be a country, declares war on Lithuania. Vienna commences work on a beautiful hearse to be delivered to their capital for the King's funeral. 1497 is another rather unexciting year. On Februrary 19th, Helvetia is vassalized by France. Well, at least they kept all their territory. On the 20th of June, Venice pays a token amount to get out of war with Hungary.

On June 9th of 1498, Tuscany vassalized Milan, but the war still rages in Italy, much to my delight. On October 1st, Eire decides that being vassalized by England isn't so bad. September the 1st of 1499 sees Sweden gaining the province of Memel and a Prussian vassal. Remember kids, its always good to attack someone when he's at war with several other countries that are stronger than him. Two weeks later, on the 14th, Savoy gains possession of Schwyz from Helvetia. Worse things could happen, I think.

This ends the 1490's. In retrospect, there are several things I could have done to have helped my country more, but I did do several things right, including the construction of a Fine Arts Academy (competed early in the 1500's), as well as the promotions I felt necessary, the beginnings of a trade empire, and diplomatic contact with many other countries. Sure, France hates me, but really, France hates everybody, and France is the only one, except for the Dutch states, and they really don't matter anyway, since they'll be gone well before they could grow dangerous to me.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoyed it. If you have any suggestions as to format, please feel free to give them. If you have any questions about what happened, I'll try to answer them. However, if you have suggestions as to gameplay, I don't think I'll be able to follow them, since I'm in the 1600's right now. I may post some screenshots eventually, but I only decided for sure to do this recently, so my earliest screenshots are from 1601. In any case, thanks.

I agree, Austria is one of the more enjoyable countries to play. It has so many options and leaders that it can become anything it wants to be. Any long range goals or are you just going to see what happens?

Well, I'll tell you what my goals were at the time, and you can decide how well I've fulfilled them as the game goes on.

First, I wanted to get at least some possessions in North or West Germany contiguous to my Dutch provinces. That way I would have a base for expansion later as well as a place to retreat to if I chose to keep the Dutch territories.

Second, I wanted gains in Southwest Germany (read, Bavaria), and perhaps eventually to connect the two spheres in a sort of diagonal stripe through Germany.

Third, I wanted some gains from Venice, specifically a port and perhaps eventually some in Italy (as they usually annex Mantua), but since I really don't want their islands, nor do I have the navy to get them, I planned to leave Venice proper to its own devices unless rebellion or Turks saved me the difficulty of taking those worthless rocks.

Fourth, I wanted to go after Bohemia, since their cultures so neatly match mine and since I'll eventually get their sheilds (do they have to exist for this to happen, or does only the Palatinate have to?).

And finally, I am an economist at heart, so I really want to expand my economy as much as possible, building tax collectors, governors (when necessary), chief judges, and manufacturies throughout the realm. As such I don't plan on going after areas without good resources, and that are at the very least one of the following three: core, accultured, or Catholic. Otherwise they are worthless to me. But yes, I will go with the flow, as I'm sure you'll see.

The 1500's: AKA, I actually do something!

On January 1st, I get the adequate general Ferdinand, to join the able general vonFrundsberg. I just know I'm going to use them somewhere. On the second, I inherit Milan, which is always nice, and of course choose to rule them as a part of Austria. It was a good week, all told.

On the 7th the Tuetonic Order pays Brandenburg 50 ducats for peace. Maybe, just maybe, they'll get out of this alive. On September 1st Lithuania annexes Prussia, which I suppose was to be expected. And on the 23rd of November, the French alliance finds a new enemy, this time Naples. I wish them luck. They will be needing it.

On January 3rd of 1501, I've finished a Fine Arts Academy in Austria. Which is good, because on the 1st I had just gotten back to +3 Stability. Oh well. In February we reach land tech 7, which allows us the construction of Artillery. On the 24th, Hungary gets military access through Moldavia. Somehow I doubt it will be all that useful. Finally, on the 22nd of November, Hannover, Bremen, Hessen, and Mecklemburg to to war with Oldenburg, Friesland, and Gelre. I watch with baited breath, hoping someone annexes Gelre so I can take the territory without a huge BB.

On April 3rd, 1502, the League of Cambrai happens to us. Great, now I know who I'll be warring with. Venice here I come. I start building troops quickly; I want to be seiging Venice before the end of the year, so as to deny them some of their yearly revenues and conscription ability. Shortly thereafter I get a Fortification effort. I don't recall where exactly, but I do recall being pleased.

On the 8th of June, Brandenburg vassalized Moldavia, which also won't last. The hearse is completed and is sent on its way. On September 17 Lithuania is very generous, giving Livland to Hungary for their trouble. The Tuetons probably see it differently. In any case, the Hungarian Baltic Empire grows. On the 2nd of October all of my forces are in place, so I declare war on Venice and Mantua, deciding not to involve Bohemia.

My plan is, I believe, really rather simple. I have a medium-sized cavaly based (but not exclusive) army, under Ferdinand, in Tirol, ready to sweep down into Venice to get rid of the smaller army there. A larger, infantry based army is in Steirmark under vonFrundsberg. So, I plan to send in vonFrundsberg after Ferdinand has won to seige Venice, while Ferdinand will go either to Istria or Mantua, depending on whether or not I can get Mantua to agree to a reasonable peace. I also have an army in Lombardia just in case Mantua wants to invade.

Everything goes exactly to plan. For four days. On the 6th Bavaria joins the Venetian alliance, sending a scouting troop into Salzburg, as well as beginning a march on Tirol. Let the recruiting begin. Luckily my troops reach Venice well before the Bavarians reach Tirol, so on the 24th I begin my seige of Venice. It goes slowly because the forces there are largely cavalry, have no artillery, and are lead by a general who, while able, has no seige value. On the 29th Bavaria rejects my offer of a White Peace, so I get serious. I guess I'm just going to have to beat them.

On November 18th, considerable Bavarian forces reach Tirol. I get nervous about sending the troops in, but decide to anyway. They may have some advantage since they are defending mountains, but I have a larger army and a better general. Still, while I expect to win, I still think my losses may be unacceptable. On the 20th Venice lands a few troops in Veneto. This happens repeatedly, and my larger forces always win. It is annoying, however.

On December 4th my forces join the Bavarians in battle in Tirol. It seems my nervousness was unfounded, since neither force takes large losses, and I do end up winning in 10 days. As the Bavarians retreat to Bayern, I decide to follow them. Nothing like capturing a capital to make someone capitulate. On the 24th, Mantua signs a White Peace with me. Now I can focus on what's important. In other news, France vassalized Savoy on the 9th. While this was important, at the time I overlooked it. I was busy. Also, on the 2nd of January, 1503, Muscovy paid Poland 225 ducats for peace.

On the 6th, Mantua goes to war with the French alliance, bringing Venice and Bavaria along with it. As I recall, France really couldn't involve itself at the time, so most of the fighting was between Mantua/Venice and the Pope. And on the 9th, Hanover annexed Oldenburg. Now, would someone in that alliance please annex Gelre so I can get this over with?

On January 10th my forces from Tirol arrive in Bavaria, easily beating the Bavarians they followed there by the 29th, and beginning the seige. I should not the vonFrundsberg has a seige value, which is of course always useful. On the 29th of March, troops from Ansbach attack into Salzburg, where I have placed a few troops. On the 12 of April, some troops Bavaria had tried to raise in Bayern are engaged; they are defeated on the 18th. On the 16th, after a bloody yet quick fight, the Bavarians win. At about the same time I finish a new army in Ostmarch. It looks like it will be tested very quickly, as Bavaria seems to be marching that direction. The fight is joined on the 3rd of May. I should note that during this time Poland annexed Moldavia, but that I never noticed Polish possession of that territory. Ever.

On the 12th of May the Bavarians who had retreated from Bayern arrived in Tirol again, much to my dismay. I decide to send the forces seiging Venice, as well as my Lombardia garrison (since Mantua is no longer part of the war), against them. On the 15th, my small rookie forces in Ostmarch manage to pull out an amazing victory, despite 80% casualties (from 5000 to about 1000) sending the Bavarians back to Ansbach. On the 14th of June the battle begins in Tirol, but it hardly matters, since I capture Bayern on the 29th and accept peace for 201 ducats on the 2nd of July. Now I can focus on Venice. Also, in August I reached naval 4, giving me Transports, though I really don't care.

On the 4th, Wurtemburg joins the Venetian alliance, which brings them to war against the French alliance. This is, shall we say, an error in judgment. Also, Poland declares war on Pommern. Is it really that bad to be at peace, like, for a little while? On the 20th I begin a seige in Venice with the troops from Bayern, and attack into Istria with the troops that had been in Venice. On the 10th of September, the seige in Istria begins in earnest, and I dispatch some troops to Dalmatia. Finally, on the 17th of December, Lithuania annexed Ryazan. This will be a bone of contention for a long time.

On January 23rd, 1504, I win a battle against rebels in Milan. The rebels had, apparantly, originated in Modena. On te 23rd of February Mecklenburd declares war on Lithuania. Good call. On March 1st I reach Land 9. Yay, a new CRT! Also, Savoy annexes Wurtemburg. This is getting out of control. On the 14th Wurzburg brings Saxony and Helvetia to war with the Frenchies. Genius! On March 23rd I capture Venice. I can taste victory, and it is sweet!

On July 1st I am delighted to know that Venice has landed 1000 troops in Zeeland. Oh no, what will I do? On Junly 4th, Sweden annexes what's left of the Tuetonic order. Whatever. On July 14th Venice offers Istria despite the fact that I don't control it nor is it my core. Don't mind if I do. Peace. It's nice.

On July 17th, Sweden, Denmark, and Holstein go to war with Poland, Lithuania, Brandenburg, and Hungary. This is a war to follow.

On January 3rd, 1505, Mecklenburg pays 50 ducats to Poland. They're still screwed. On February 28th, Tuscany brings all of Italy to war again by declaring war on the Pope. Genoa and the Knights are more than willing to join, as are the Frenchies. I watch as, throughout the war, Tuscany conquers all of the Papacy, but does't make peace until France has come and conquered it all back. I don't understand that one bit. On May 16th Saxony pays Savoy 46 ducats.

August 1st is a happy day for me as I see Modena declare independance from Venice. As a result of this Bavaria dishonors their alliance. Hoorah! On the 24th, Brandenburg annexes Mecklemburg, and on September 1st gets Vorpommern from Pommern. A good few days, all in all. On the 14th, France militarily annexed Helvetia. I'm not scared..... really.

On May 9th, 1506, Hessen chooses to vassalize Gelre rather than annex her. Drat. The only other thing of note that happened that year was Wurzburg making peace with Savoy on the 9th of September.

On the 1st of January, 1507, Hessen's government fell. If only they had annexed Gelre! On the 11th, Kazan declared war on Lithuania and the gang. This strikes me as unintelligent, but it ends up working out all right. On the 2nd of March, Holstein gets Mecklenburg from Brandenburg. Good for them! On the 29th of March, the Papal States buy off Venice. And here I thought it would be the other way around... On the 1st of October, a White Peace was signed between Mantua/Bavaria and Savoy. That's nice...

On January 23rd 1508, I decide to let the Fuggers run our finances. It will have to do. On the 9th of February, Bavaria makes peace with France, paying 68 ducats. I decide this would be a good time to get them into my alliance, so I send them gifts and such, and on the 13th of October, they accept. Also, on the 7th of that month, Hungary paid Denmark 125 ducats for peace. They must have been wreaking havoc on the Baltic Empire... In better news for Hungary, they vassalized Pommern on the 10th of November. This wouldn't last, of course, since Poland annexed them on the 11th of January, 1509, but I'm sure it felt good, and that's what matters, right?

1509 was another completely boring year; other than the annexation of Pommern, the only other occurance of note was Venice making peace with Modena, taking it as a vassal.

So ends the 1500's! Next, the 1510's, yet another decade full of intrigue, and me sitting on my ass doing next to nothing (or is it?). Also, here are some screenshots. Enjoy.

The screenshots work for me if you right click and choose show image. I don't know if that will work for everyone, but I suggest giving it a try. Also, ignore the events. I don't delete my saved games, so these are events that happened at startup that may not have happened in game, at least at that time.

I noticed the pics are .BMPs. You should make them .JPGs instead. Of course, that won´t help with getting them up in the first place, but once you solve that, make them JPGs. It takes a lot less time to load that way.

Also, I was just told that BMPs don´t work with all browsers.
