If your ally is currently helping you out in a war and an opportunistic foe declares war on your ally you won't be given the prompt asking if you want to defend them or not. It's a terrible thing to helplessly watch your ally being conquered as your current war nears its end. I don't want to start a separate war just so that I can defend my ally. I would like to have the option to ask my ally if I can join the war on his side.
I'm currently watching my poor French ally being destroyed by the Spanish. I have no casus belli on Spain, and I would like to assist France because they've been an outstanding ally whenever the German-Austrian-Hungarian-Italian coalitions rose up against me. I don't want to leave them high and dry during their time of need!
