If other AI nations want to delete their forts to save money, that is one thing. But it doesn't feel right that subjects can do this without the approval of their overlord.

Be on top of their finances, stop them going bankrupt, as the player would you want the ai to stop you deleting a useless tier 3 fort

People wont be satisfied until "subject" is just your nation owning the provinces but you core them with diplo points.

Well I guess you could fortify your march but it would be nice if you could do something similar with your vassal/PU. Even with subsidies they sometimes delete their forts and it just sucks to give out subsidies that cost much more than the fort and they still mothball it, especially when you're small
There are even two buttons: 1) fortify march; 2) give subsidies.

That is one way of buffing them. Thing is, subjects are unreliable not in a good way and the game forces you to babysit subjects if you want them to be successful.

-Colonial Nations still don't know how to balance their expense and can be stomped by natives.
-Marches march their armies wherever and are rarely useful.
-Subjects, in general, use the god awful AI building prioritization and you as the player can do exactly null about it.
-They love giving military access so that nations can more easily invade both you and then.

At the end of the day the only reason why subjects are a thing is because you pay Diplo in order to annex them. Otherwise they are rarely, if ever useful and are commonly a liability to the player.
