This happens fairly frequently actually when someone presses a claim for a landless person who just happens to usurp a county that has a church as it's capital when the war is won. It's also not uncommon to see Serene Doges occur. I have also seen a Grand Prince of the HRE in 1.06b (basically a Mayor-Emperor) before (don't confuse this with the new titles for Russian Dukes which is also "Grand Prince" now.

The funny thing is when you actually get a Queen-Bishop, because that is just totally screwed up. It happens in the way I described above, only when it's a woman whose claim is being pressed.

It is also possible to create your own King-Bishops and Serene Doges as Emperor by giving someone (for example) a County, then a Bishopric, then a Kingdom, then revoking the County title. From memory, for this to work, I think they have to say no to the revokation and you win the war and them accepting the revokation doesn't work. This worked in 1.06b and I don't see why it wouldn't still work now.

This happened in my game too. The Kingdom of Scotland became the Theocracy of Scotland.

After a thorough inspection of the case, verifying dates and titles, I think I understood how things went.

dunkeld.png

  • The lineage is of House Dunkeld, starting with Malcolm III. Malcolm had five legitimate sons, and a late bastard made a bishop.
  • Malcolm's first son, Duncan the Second, inherits the throne. He has an only son, but this one dies before him.
  • Malcolm's second son, Donald, also died before Duncan's reign ended. Donald has a son, David, but this one is a bishop, thus unbale to inherit.
  • Malcolm's third son, Edward, dies childless.
  • The fourth and fifth sons both have no son. Colin, the last brother, died before Lulach, therefore Alan becomes King.
  • Pursuing the curse of his predecessors, Alan dies with an only daughter. His Brother Alpin takes the crown.
  • And then, suddendly, David, Donald's bishop son (remember him ?) becomes Bishop-King of Scotland !

What's really intriguing is that the single holding of David; the bishopric of Llanelwy, is located in Perfeddwald, a welsh county outside of the scottish borders (lower-right side of the map screenshot) !
This is were I lose track of the events. My hypothesis is that the bishopric was an off-border vassal of a scottish duke or count, and that this lord started a faction to install the bishop with a claim on the throne. The plot succeeded, and David, to his own surprise, became the rightful ruler of a quite nice kingdom in terms of size and military power.

The irony is that he will most presumably be the last Dunkeld to sit on the scottish throne, since his successor will be nominated.

I've seen this with France before as well. I was too busy with internal affairs as the Kingdom of Burgundy in the HRE to figure out how it happened, but the interesting thing was that it turned succession to 'open-elective', so each new ruler was a randomly generated character, just like in a bishopric. The ironic thing was that it got swallowed up somehow by the Abbadids, so it obviously wasn't too bothered about its new status as being ruled by a supposed devout Christian :). I'm not sure if the usurper became a Muslim equivalent, though, or if it just reverted back to being a kingdom. Annoyingly, I've deleted the save file, so I can't go and find out...

Well, in one of my games the French King went Heretic and a crusade was called quickly and the Papal State won. Then all of the Heart of France was made Prince-Archbishoprics

but it did not do as well as yours...

Good job getting that little girl to play :p
