Hi, my first post, so please be gentle:wacko:

We start with the OKW and the OK West theatres in the Demo.

This is a general question rather than one dealing with the demo, is there a way to have more than 2, how, and how do I assign its territory of control?

You could set objectives at the army group or army level instead. E.g AG north goes for leingrad, centre for moscow, South for Stalingrad.

Would be good though if one could, especially when invading USSR, having independent objectives would simplify the game IMO.
You can create Armies, and Army Groups as well. These help you break down the theatres nicely. I believe historically, Germany had the equivalent of 1 Theatre HQ for Barbarossa and 3 Army Group HQs (North, Centre, South). Really you shouldn't need to assign whole Theatres to independent objectives - there should be many. Or - none. Try assigning the Army Groups to the Theatre to get the command bonus but give your Groups the objectives so the forces you designate to them stay in the proper areas.

edit - damn, beat by a couple seconds. :)

Wasn't sure if once I set the whole theatre to AI control that I can give separate objectives to its individual Army Groups, and their Armies, etc, etc.
Having a theatre set on AI control looks very convenient as it will deal with its side threats (Partisans, local attacks, etc) while its will help the overall attack of the Army Groups and Armies with extra Air Power and the unites it has attached directly to Theatre Command.

so at what level should i control units? or should i just set objectives? its fun but gets boring telling ur units where to go without actually clicking there. im also not used to trusting the ai (i NEVER let the ai handle my sliders in HoI 2 simply because i was worried my production would be interupted).

You cannot.

If you put the Theatre under AI control, then you can't mess around with its subordinate units. If you wanted to assign AI control to Army Groups, you must leave its superior command (the Theatre) on Manual control.

so at what level should i control units?
Whatever level you like. Control them all manually, if you want. Or detach a single Panzer Corps to run yourself, and set the whole Theatre on AI. Or anything in between.

Depends on what the situation is and how much involvement you feel there needs to be. Come 1943 when you have fronts opened up all over the place chances are it's going to be next to impossible to manage each division and still keep the game going at a decent pace due to the sheer size of the map in Europe. On areas of least importance you may just want to let the theater AI take it over so you can manage and focus on much more important and crucial areas.

Not optimal but will have to do. Will just have to leave a "reserve" Army Group to deal with internal/defensive threats under AI control then.

Be aware that if you were putting the Theatre on Manual and assigning the Army Groups to AI control... AG-North => Leningrad, AG-Center => Moscow, AG-South => Kiev, for example...

... you can simply detach the Air assets from the Theatre and parcel them out to the Army Groups for the AI to use as it wishes, and also form an "Army Group Reserve" with Panzer and Motorized Divisions, and its own Air assets that you can control manually, as a "Fire Brigade" to deal with trouble-spots.

It strikes me as pretty close to optimal... although I admit that I'm heavily biased.

I have found that I like to assign objectives to Armies or Army Groups, never Theatre. They don't have to be under AI control to receive command bonuses. Command bonuses are based on distance from HQ - individual unit. The level the HQ the further it can be from units to confer bonuses.
I don't think you'd ever want to dedicate an entire Army Group to partisan control. You should be able to stay on top of it with a mix of garrison divisions and cheap cavalry; at least that's what I do.

You will hardly need the full set of HQ command bonus to beat a bunch of Partisans, anyway.

If I had, say, 5 army groups all targeting 5 important Soviet provinces, and told them to blitz, would they still try to take other provinces as well? There are so many provinces I don't want to manually take them all.

I believe most people will be impressed with the capabilities of the AI. It may not take everything you believe it should, but it will try to do exactly what you ask it. You just have to be flexible because it may move units in what appear to be unorthodox ways.
