It seems like the Zenak will reap what they've sown. It's oddly fitting - they know of their transgressions but refuse to apologize for them.

After the First War of Independence
The Galactic settlement of 2609 - Authors: Gen Metira, Alipi Kerai - Department of Zenak Studies, Conclave of the University of Historical Research in Galaxy M498

The War of 2599-2609 was relatively short compared to the great campaigns against the Jibru, but this was a bitter and widespread conflict. It was also the first war that the Zenak lost.

While the Fiiral, HSH and Lilarobius started by taking on remote regions of Zenak space and their loyal vassals, the Zenak initially sought to suppress the small enclaves that were held by uplifted species. The Zenak fleets in Arich, Iflore and Nizatorom were unable to avoid being overwhelmed by enemy forces, and they scattered, eventually finding routes back to Zenak core space. The Fiiral and the HSH then launched successive attacks into Zenak space, while the Zenak sent four fleets and their Star Eaters on a path deep into Fiiral space.

Despite numerical inferiority, the Zenak held on to much of their core space, and launched counter-attacks where they could. Epira was never directly threatened, and the Zenak kept fleets there and nearby to defend their home system, but the Fiiral did get within two jumps by the end of the war. The Zenak strategy to move into Fiiral space paid off, however, and they occupied the Fiiral home system and others.

After ten years, both sides were becoming exhausted, and the Zenak sued for peace. They gave up several occupied systems, and their loyal vassals also lost out - particularly the Diri. The rebels were granted independence, and soon after the THA and Lilarobius started to pressure some of the smaller polities to become their vassals. The Zenak did take control of the Nivlac, and expelled the inhabitants. The other uplfted enclaves that rebelled remained free. The Diri claim on the Fiiral home system was recognised, and a handful of Fiiral systems, mostly uninhabited, went to the Zenak. But overall, the rebels made the most gains.

In the period that followed, the Fiiral, HSH and Lilarobius each became rival powers, despite having been united in their struggle against vassalage to the Zenak. But between them and the other independent polities, they re-established the Galactic Community, with sixteen delegations being sent to the first session of the Assembly. Elections to the Council were held, with the Lilarobius, Fiiral and HSH taking up the three seats.

The Zenak, for their part, tried to keep out of organic affairs. They gifted systems to their remaining vassals to try and keep them in the fold and to reduce their inefficiencies. When a breakaway faction caused a war with a Zenak vassal, the Zenak did move to crush the rebellion and restore order, but otherwise they did not engage. They did not seek to rejoin the Community, but they would have been rejected anyway, given organic hostility.

In 2612, the HSH and Lilarobius fought a war against each other. It was started when a breakaway faction in Hjannarthi space broke away, and gained Lilarobius protection. The breakaway faction was quickly defeated by the HSH, but the Lilarobius continued the war until a total victory in 2619 and, while they only annexed the key gateway system at Iflore, the HSH was so weakened that it became a vassal to the Bruggan of Vivis (former seat of the Vivisandian), who had only recently peacefully broken away from a Zenak vassal.

Galactic politics became very complex. All three of the Council members had denouncement motions moved against them, with the one against the Lilarobius passing during the war. The Fiiral fought almost constant wars against breakaway polities or small neighbours who for some reason attacked them (the Fiiral maintained the largest fleet in the galaxy at this time).

And so, while this period was a lull after the first war of independence from the Zenak, it was far from peaceful.

The Zenak have lost their preeminence. Let's hope that the other powers don't repeat their mistakes. An Aetherophasic Engine would remain a disaster...

The Fiiral have now overtaken the Zenak on the Contacts view ranking, which is the first time the Zenak have not been at the top since the Jibru were being defeated.

I am basically running the game passively on top speed to see what happens, and if the Zenak are brought into a war I get them to quickly react. Otherwise, research is on auto (just running through the available high level techs), every 10 years we activate the Omnicodex and push a new species out into the galaxy, and I keep the economy ticking over as the remaining machine worlds and habitats are developed.

The Zenak don't know how to destroy the Engine. They don't want to allow another species to get control of it. It may be that an enemy intends to destroy it, but they don't trust organics to be open about their motives.

If the Fiiral attacked in full force, the Zenak would be unable to hold Epira. For some reason the avians held off in the 2599-2609 war.
