Naval Warfare in the North Sea

As was mentioned in the earlier update, the Baden had joined up with the 1st Fleet under admiral Röhrl and had engaged a French fleet off the coast of the North Sea.

feb41917northseabattlege1.png

The battle started slowly with the sinking of the French cruiser Guichen, but soon escalated as the French lost the dreadnaught Provence, while the Germans lost the modern cruiser Wiesbaden.

feb41917navalbattlqj8.png

This brought the number of ships on both sides to even until the French cruiser D’Entrecaseaux joined the battle, this however did not deter the Germans as the French lost another cruiser, as well as a battleship, and submarine squadron.

feb91917navalbattleep5.png

Finally damage to one of the German cruisers forced Admiral Röhrl to retreat. He had proven just as capable as Gedicke (with some pretty nice stats)

feb101917rohrlqh9.png

The final tally for the battle saw the French loose 1 dreadnaught, 1 battleship, 2 cruisers and a submarine squadron compared to German losses of only 1 modern cruiser. For his efforts Admiral Röhrl was awarded the special naval medallion: Order of Gedicke, second class

Order of Gedicke sounds nice. And Röhrl deserves it.
I normally would have come up with half a text about the conditions one must meet to be awarded this prestigious medal, but I'm tired so I spare you me half-witted ramblings. Only have to say: Thumbs up, this is one of the great AARs on this forum.

February 6,1917 to February 10,1917

In early February the Japanese secretly landed a small force at Weihaiwei. Gedicke knew this was his opportunity to go back after the Japanese fleet, and on February 6th, he sailed into the Yellow Sea.

feb61917gedickesetssailxo5.png

He was unable to find the Japanese fleet, but the Imperial staff ordered him to maintain his position in order to provide shore bombardment in Korea and China. Korea for the most part looked wide open to the Germans, as 9 Kavallerie divisions were heading south, while another army was marching out of China to attack the last remnants of the Japanese army at Lushan.

feb81917koreawa4.png

Meanwhile back on the Western Front, there are still numerous battles taking place, but the Germans are enjoying a vast numerical superiority in most of them. A few of the larger battles show the desperateness of the French situation, as they remain outnumbered 2 to 1 even with their larger armies.

feb61917westernfrontyi9.png

Even the battle of Melun, which represented the key to the French army’s defense of Paris, was now a lost cause (as is the former commanding general)

feb81917melunpj8.png

The sum of all these battles has revealed the new French paradigm of hold your ground to the bitter end. This becomes increasingly evident as you look closer at the battles taking place and realize how many divisions are being completely wiped out during this offensive. The end result can only be the complete annihilation of the French army (again).

battlesonthewesternfronqg3.png

The lone bright spot for the French remains Petain in the south, who apparently is not going to lose in any battle where he is only outnumbered 4 to 1. (I sure would have hated to face him at Verdun)

The French are about to really regret that whole rush to war part II thing. Especially when they don't get Iron Skull Army II out of it.

*please* release Korea as a puppet/vassal/wotever. European powers taking it so easily and for no good reason is always so lame... :p

Pretty please?
j.

ps.
Oh, and as for the lame jokes:
Order of Gedicke, Second Class requires supremacy of the field and crushing naval victory in the midst of which one completely fails in his primary objective. In this case, Röfl would have actually received the German War Cross (aka the Naval Cross or the Honor Cross), except that a cousin of the Imperial family and a gaggle of Central Power reporters were aboard the Wiesbaden. Thanks to the wonders of modern censorship, though, medal award goes page one; new aquarium decorations, page 13, third column.

Order of Gedicke, First Class has the same basic requirements, but you must further lose a minimum of five transports.

A Little More About Korea

rhynoclemmis said:
Wow, I didn't realize that you're really making your presence felt in Korea already. I thought you only had two divisions there.

Part of the confusion may have come from an earlier update where I mentioned there were two armies operating in Korea.

Somewhere back around late 1915, there was an update mentioning the possibility of hostilities between Japan and Germany, and outlining a plan to invade China if that happened. Part of the plan authorized the raising of colonial troops in China to be used in such an operation should it become necessary.

When China was brought into the Allies, Germany attacked with 9 kavalerie divisions, and 2 armies of 9 divisions each. Once peace with China was establised, one of the armies, and the Kavalleriekorps were still in China, and thus able to head towards Korea. The other army was trapped in German held lands, and thus needed those transports that Gedicke so ablely lost. :D

Here is where we stand right now in the Far East...

feb121917koreapi4.png

1. Gedicke is sitting off the coast of Korea to provide shore bombardment, and prevent any Japanese retreat from Lushun.
2. The kavallerieKorps has split in two with both groups heading south to capture what they can.
3. The infantry army has finally arrived and is dealing with the Japanese at Lushun
4. Lastly the other army is sitting at Wihaiwai waiting for transports

What CAN'T Gedicke do?

What would Gedicke do
If he was here right now,
He'd make a plan
And he'd follow through,
That's what Gedicke'd do.

When Gedicke was in the olympics,
Skating for the gold,
He did two sow cows and a triple lutz,
While wearing a blind fold.

When Gedicke was in the alps,
Fighting grizzly bears,
He used his magical fire breath,
And saved the maidens fair.

So what would Gedicke'd do
If he were here today,
I'm sure he'd kick an ass or two,
That's what Gedicke'd do.

And what would Gedicke do,
He'd call all the kids in town,
And tell them to unite for true
That's what Gedicke would do.

When Gedicke travelled through time
To the year 3010,
He fought the evil robot kings
and saved the human race again

And when Gedicke built the pyramids,
He beat up Kubela Kong.

'Cos Gedicke doesn't take shit from an-e-y-body

A Quick Look Around, February 13,1917

We begin this update with another peace offering. This time from the Serbs…

feb121917serbpeaceoffpc8.png

Since this war is clearly Serbia’s fault, the terms for Serbia will be especially harsh. I intend to create a Macedonian state out of southern Serbia. Several provinces in the north will be given to Hungary, and the remains of Serbia will join the German Economic Union. What’s left of the Serbian economy will be used for war reparations to the German families who have lost loved ones during the war.

As for the overall situation in Serbia…

feb131917serbiazq5.png

Most of the country is occupied now, and Beograd’s defenders have been defeated, and soon she too will be under German control. It won’t be long before the Germans can begin sending their own envoys.

In other news, the Socialist are launching yet another attack in northern Austria.

feb131917austriancivilwrf8.png

Anyone care to lay odds on the outcome of the battle?

In Egypt, the last of the British defenders have been defeated, and now our goal is to prevent the Turks from capturing to much land before we can.

feb121917egyptop1.png

Of course all this is secondary to the action taking place on the Western Front.

feb121917westernfrontbw5.png

Most of the initial battles are over. Petain continues to hold out in the south, and there remain three other battles, all of which see the Germans with an overwhelming superiority. I don’t have an exact count, but if I had to guess I would say that by the time these three battles are over, the French will have completely lost half of their divisions on the western front.

It is rumored that meetings are already taking place in the Imperial Palace to draw up the surrender document.

The Russian Civil War

The Russian Civil war is only 6 weeks old, so I wasn’t expecting to much action, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised. For this update I took the Fog of War off in order to get a more accurate picture of what is going on.

We begin in the south, where the Georgian independence movement is beginning to move outside of its borders, and finding the land crawling with rebels.

feb131917georgiace8.png

Also dealing with the rebels, we find the Ukrainian army making its first steps towards claiming the eastern half of the Ukraine. They too are finding the land crawling with rebels.

feb131917ukrainezq8.png

To the north, Belarus has not yet made any moves outside of their border, but a little F12 changes that…

Moving a little further north we see both the Mensheviks and Bolsheviks making tentative moves into undeclared Russian heartlands.

feb131917tenativestepsbf5.png

Next we look at the Menshevik/Bolshevik border to see what great battles are taking place

bolshevikarmymu7.png
What the…

Where’s the Menshevik army???

Oh, there they are patrolling the Finnish border, that makes sense

A Naval Update

hessenpx2.png

By now most of you who’ve followed this AAR know my affinity towards the navy, and so with that in mind I thought it time for more medals to be passed out.

The bulk of the High Seas Fleet was in the far east under Grand Admiral Gedicke. There was another squadron stationed on the North Sea coast under Admiral Röhrl, and both were given simultaneous orders to go look for enemy ships.

Gedicke began by splitting his force in two and giving the second squadron into the capable hands of Admiral von Spee.

feb131917vonspeewb5.png

With two groups (both having 4 dreadnaughts), Gedicke was hoping to use the Rensslaer paradigm against the Japanese , while still being able to withdraw damaged ships.

germanfareastnavalcommaif0.png

Both groups were to sail to the coast of Japan where it was hoped they would find small squadrons of Japanese warships guarding the home islands.

Meanwhile Röhrl moved out of port in the hopes of finding the French fleet he had left in the North Sea. He found the French (sort of).

feb131917northseacoastgn5.png

Obviously the battle didn’t last long.

Meanwhile Gedicke found an enemy fleet of his own to engage, in the Sea of Japan.

feb151917seaofjapanpn9.png

It was only two battleships, but hey, what you gonna do.

feb161917easternseaofjaex7.png

Not to be outdone, Röhrl decided to move a little closer to the British Islands and see what he might find.

feb171917rohrlmovesforwtg0.png

And find something he did…

feb181917rohrlfindssomeln3.png

The battle did not last long, as the British brought in an additional dreadnaught and a battleship.

feb191917bettleofdovershg8.png

Röhrl managed to escape without loosing any ships, although the König was severely damaged. He did however manage to sink one British battleship in the encounter.
