The Italian Front, January 1916
There are times in war when superior strategy and execution turn the tide of battle and determine the victor, and then there are times like these when blind luck intervenes.
I was rather surprised to find that in five days time I had wiped out 8000 Italians when I had experienced nothing but futility in all my previous encounters at Bergamo, so I decided to look a little closer, and was amazed at what I found, or rather what I didn’t find.
For the astute observer you will notice no fortifications at Bergamo. Upon closer examination I discovered that the latest army I sent to Bergamo was comprised entirely of artillery brigades and that they had apparently reduced the fortifications at Bergamo to nothing. The elimination of the Italian fortifications had a drastic effect on the battle as you might imagine.
In Berlin the Imperial Staff was congratulating themselves for their brilliant actions at Bergamo, while General Joeb just shook his head in disbelief.
So this is the situation now in Italy as of January 8, 1915
The battle of Bergamo is finally turning to the German’s favor, while fighting continues at Bozen and Zell am See. An extra nine divisions were approaching Bozen, and when they arrived they gave the Germans an overwhelming numerical superiority.
With a string of bad news for the Italians they put forward their best peace offering to date.
But we finally have them where we want them, and so the war continues on.
Victories at Bergamo and Bozen buoy the fighting spirit of Germans, but not enough to help at Zell am See.
With the victory at Bozen, I am hopeful that I can soon send reinforcement to help out at Zell am See. In the mean time I will leave this update with a pic I have been waiting to see for some time.
You know I think I could stop this AAR right here and be happy...
