I've finally caught up with this one completely and have enjoyed it. Very realistic and the updates are both straightfoward, but still able to give a sense of urgency and tension.

France seems pretty well beat. It's the others you have to worry about. Especially Russia.

And a quick question - when I skimmed through this during the last librAARy update, I assumed you were playing all of the central powers and thus listed this under "various countries." However, would you rather me list it under "Germany"? Or did you decide to replay as the other Central Powers as suggested upthread? I'll be happy to place it under the heading you prefer. Just let me know. :)

All's go on the western front, and on other fronts. I see the AI is managing to send its fleet into battle piecemeal. If that stays up you ought to have the victory.

Hmm.... Either you produced a new 10 page AAR real quick while I wasn't looking, or you changed the name!!!

And the name seems to ring a bell with me somewhere... ;)

I think I'm an update behind... which I will rectify soon.

Great work!

Well, I can be a prolific writer when properly motivated, but alas it is nothing more than a name change.

I figured we needed to change Central Powers AAR to a German AAR to avoid confusion. After that decision was made I thought I liked the new name better.

anonymous4401: I'm impressed anyone voted for this AAR. We went 77 post before the war even started, and then I took close to three weeks off for vacation, I'm just glad some people are reading, much less voting for me.

By the way, Anyone who votes for me in the AAR Choice Awards will have an army named after them ;) Of course I cannot guarantee that it will be a victorious German army.

stnylan: Don't worry, the naval battles go slowly, and the British have plenty of time to bring more ships to bear

The Western Front, Nov 15th - Nov 29th 1914

The second half of November saw thing quiet down a little on the Western Front. The battle of Orleans which was a battle of attrition favoring the French turned with the arrival of German reinforcements. This war clearly favors the defense, and in this case the Germans had both numerical superiority, and strong defensive positioning. By November 20th, the French called off their offensive.

In the battle of Paris, German reinforcements had turned another battle of attrition into a French slaughter.

nov211914battleofparispc5.png

By the end of the month the French ended their offensive, and the Germans were now in complete control of Paris. This left only one battle still raging on the western front. The battle of Dijon was slowly eroding the BEF, and the last major French army. Besides that it was all quiet on the western front (I just had to throw that line in  )

nov241914westernfrontlh6.png

Things were going so well for the Germans that the Spanish began making overtures of friendship.

The Battle of Slave Coast, Nov 15th to Dec 1st

germandreadnaughtkp9.jpg

While things quieted down on the western front, they were heating up in the naval battle of Slave Coast.

nov161914slavecoastrj1.png

The arrival of a British battle group thrilled Admiral Von Spee to no end. Here was an opportunity to engage the British with a 3 to 1 advantage that would allow the Germans to inflict far more damage than they would receive.

On November 16th, the Allies managed to sink the last German transport squadron, and the next day saw a luck shot damage the König Albert.

The British meanwhile lost the cruiser Sappho.

On November 20th two other British battle groups had arrived with 17 dreadnaughts, 15 battleships, 3 subs, and 4 modern cruisers. But Von Spee had no intention of retreating.

nov211914slavecoastdk9.png

As the new squadrons were arriving the Germans were able to sink the cruiser Charydbis, and Pathfinder as well as the battleship Britannia, and the 23rd Armored Cruiser Flotilla (battleship)

At the same time the Germans lost the first dreadnaught of the war when the König Albert finally and heroically succumbed to her wounds.

bayernscuttledatscapaflowli5.jpg

The Germans also lost the battleship Wittelsbach, and the 2nd Armored Cruiser Flotilla (battleship)

So far the battle was not the overwhelming victory that Von Spee had envisioned, and it only got worse for Von Spee. On December 5th, the Russians arrived with 5 battleships, 3 cruisers, and 2 subs, while the French sent a cruiser to join in the battle.

nov261914slavecoastxp8.png

By December 1st, the Germans had lost the battleship Schleswig-Holstein, and the cruisers Berlin, Nymphe, Victoria Louise, and Freya.

And so after two weeks of fighting here is the score (in ships lost)

scorenov291914pe7.png

These results do not bode well for the future of the High Seas Fleet. The Kaiser is seriously thinking about keeping the fleet in port for the rest of the war.

This naval battle wets my appetite, a lovely aspect of the game since sometimes when you fight land battles your divisions limp off but are not destroyed, as for the naval battles a brand new ship can be destroyed before its crew is even able to settle in, anyways you get the idea. At least the Brits reached my expectations in their naval supremacy and overall fighting unlike some other allie I can name...*pokes france's gut*

A Quick Look Around

The Western Front
The French army was now in full retreat with no thought of future offensives. The German army however had enough divisions that it could continue to pursue the retreating French armies, while still allowing other troops to rest and recover.

After the battle of Orleans, the remaining French forces had retreated to Moulins, where they were quickly met by von Hindenburg's I. Armee.

nov301914battleofmoulinsvj3.png

To the north, the General Foch took the disorganized French forces and retreated from Paris. At the same time Herzog Albrecht took the victorious Germans from Paris, and the race was on to see who could get to Chartres first.

German cavalry won the race, and the French were forced to attack.

nov301914battleofcharterscc3.png

AT Dijon the last French forces had withdrawn, and the Germans were occupying the city. Everywhere else on the western front the Germans were either advancing, or besieging.

On the North Sea coast, the British landed some extra troops to support the Canadian amphibious assault. The Germans had dispatched four divisions to deal with the Canadians, and followed that up with another 8 divisions to deal with the British.

dec21914invasionofnorthseacoastgd1.png

I don't anticipate much trouble in this sector.

China
Things continue on...

dec21914chinanh9.png

Afrika
The British had launched two separate attacks into Ostafrika, one from the north, and another from the northwest next to the Congo border.

The battle of Mwanza was originally a combined assault that included Belgian troops from the Congo, and was definitely going well for the Allies until the Belgian Armistice was signed. The battle at present is still up in the air.

dec21914congoborderqr6.png

To the east, the battle of Tanga, is likewise still to early to tell.

dec21914tanganyikaqm4.png

Reinforcements should become available by the end of the month, and I feel confident that we can hold out until then.

Further south the German forces have finally reached Johannesburg, and you have to like their chances...

dec21914johannesburgra8.png

In summary here is where the war stands...
Western front: Complete German Victory
Afrika: push
Eastern front: Minor Russian Victory
Far east: push
Balkans: push
Caucasus: Moderate Russian Victory
Naval: push
Diplomacy: push

It can be a little confusing, and in fact I let the battle go longer than I should because of that confusion. Every ship in a fleet has a value of 0 to 100 representing the damage it has taken (100 being no damage).

The numbers that you are looking at show that the allied fleet has less damage it can take than the Germans, but what it does not show is the make up of the allied fleet. The allied fleet has dreadnaughts and battleships that are harder to damage, and thus is still in a strong position. The Germans have more points to give in this battle, but because the German ships are weaker, they will lose those points easier than the allies will.

Ah... this explains a lot...

(I just got vicky yesterday...)

Where are these Russian victories we heard about??? We saw the Western Front, Africa, and China... But why aren't we seeing the big Russian invasion?

Minor Russian Victory? What did they do?

It's been a little while since I posted anything about the eastern or caucasian fronts. There haven't really been any battles on those fronts, but the Russians have so many troops, and have captured some territory that I tink at present you would have to say they are winning on those fronts. This of course will change once Germany turns its attention east...
